We already have JPK, Parker, Mills etc who are supposedly so good defensively yet other teams just walk it out of the centre against us and kill us on the spread anyway. So Lipinski wouldn't stand out that much.

It is a cliche but the best defence is a good offence. If you have the ball in your hands you don't need to tackle.

It's something we could balance as a team but it's always been very clear since Roos that our coaches demand a strong defensive effort. Skillful players who don't put in the hard yards don't get picked. Mitchell being left in the reserves for the longest time is the most extreme example.

I just think if he joins us and doesn't buy in he'll continue to player in the VFL

I think that might've been a standard Horse was able to hold players to when we had All Australians everywhere in our midfield. But we have a very different midfield now and Lipinski's skillset would prove too good to not play.

I think talls were their general request but sorting out which of their current KPPs play at what end of the ground is causing some debate. Talia is only 30 at the end of the year but is pretty banged up from carrying the backline for the last decade. Tex will be gone sooner rather than later so I suppose converting some of their key defenders might be of necessity.

Maybe we can pilfer one of theirs ;)

We are are absolutely flush for KPD's (Talia, Butts, McAsey, Worrell, Murray) AND KPF's (Walker, Thilthorpe, Himmelberg, Frampton, not sure if you want to include Fogarty)

At this stage Worrell and Murray are developing well and are starting to get game time in the senior side. McAsey needs a proper pre-season and i know he had some drama with his dad almost dying last year, so i reckon it's just a need to hit the weights room for him. Butts would not be up for sale.

Talia has a tendon issue in his foot from surgery that he's basically playing on and HOPING it comes good, because there's nothing further than can be done for it. If he can't recover from that injury then it might be early retirement. The club have said they want to see some mobility from him before he gets a new contract and he's unable to do so at the moment.

We will definitely looking to trade in & draft quality mids at the end of the year, and Hamish Ogilvie has mentioned bringing in our 2022 1st rounder into this draft as well. My guess is that we'll see a combination of our talls head out the door as part of trade deals.

I would be much happier nabbing Lipinski than a Constable type. No replacement for skill.

Bulldogs are going to have to lose some midfielders eventually, the only fear is that no one wants to come to the swans.

Hopefully, our upward trend makes us more attractive this year, similar to how Brisbane has been able to nab some stars.

I think our midfield can improve but it doesn't really excite me the same way a key defender or another ruck really would. Glaring big weakness in our team which we just can't got on top of.
See, I'm the opposite. I think a real A grade mid to replace Kennedy/let Parker move a bit more forward would boost us along each line

Some peoples fear is another persons certainty. Without COLA we will, gènerally speaking, be uncompetitive when it comes to talent acquisition. As shit as it is we rely more heavily on the draft than nearly any other club... barring probably GC

Oddly enough I would rather have a few glaring weaknesses in the team than be a team like St Kilda whose weaknesses are harder to define. Easier to fix a team that has a couple of glaring weaknesses.

When fully fit I feel we have good coverage but we don't have a backup ruck (Amartey or McLean might become that but that takes years), we also very much lack in height in defence. Currently looks very thin once you scratch the surface.

At least I feel our midfield has some depth and should Parker or Kennedy go down Hewitt or Florent can take over.

I agree. Hewett should have already effectively retired Kennedy and Rowbottom, Stephens, Warner should be forcing Parker to the forwards. When you break it down, the problem is probably that Heeney never developed into a midfielder and Mills was held back for so long.
We have the pieces, it's just hasn't fallen into place like it could have...

Probably the team with the biggest glaring weakness is the Bulldogs, who just don't seem to be a full team. Yet they're second on the ladder and JUH and their father son boy will go a long way to shoring up that side of things

According to eDPS's rankings Gibcus is in our range. It is odd though that Amiss isn't even on the list.

I reckon the Bulldogs glaring weakness is that they have too many classy mids and an emerging gluttony of freakish key forwards.

I would love one of these guys

12. Matthew Johnson
A tall, ball winning midfielder at 192cm, Johnson combines ball winning capabilities with composure, class and evasion in traffic. By hand and foot, Johnson is an effective user of the football, displaying vision on his kicks, lowering his eyes to find leading targets inside-50m and making sound decisions in traffic with ball in hand. Johnson enjoys the hard components of the game, winning a high proportion of his ball in contested situations and connecting on his tackles. With Johnson's start to the season slower than expected in the WAFL Colts and at WAFL League level respectively, he drops outside the top-10, though to his credit has shown improvement over his past two matches which ensures he remains inside the top-15.

19. Josh Gibcus
A high-flying intercept marking key defender, Gibcus has an elite vertical and running vertical jump. He combines these weapons with his near best in class ball reading capabilities and overhead mark to be this year's premier intercept marking key defender. While Gibcus is in some respects one dimensional and will be looking to add additional strengths to his game, he's best in class at what he does. Gibcus drops for no reason other than others rising.

and if we lose Dawson

15. Josh Fahey
Taking out the MCC President's Medal as the AFL Academy's best player in their clash against Geelong's VFL team, Fahey earned a position on this draft board. A precise, yet booming kick with penetration of 65m, Fahey is a weapon out of the back half with the drive he generates. A GWS Academy product, expect the Giants to match bids on Fahey with a view towards him being their kickout specialist and another rebounding defender. Fahey drops as others rise.

Amiss wasnt really on anyones radar a month ago, that'll change in the next update or two. This probably won't age well but Gibcus is fools gold - tall interceptor, not a KPD. Bazzo was the guy but he's tumbling out of every phantom at the moment. In our range Hobbs, Erasmus, Goater or Wilmot would be great gets. Fahey wont get past GWS unfortunately

Well the eDPS list was posted only a few days ago but either way other than the top 2 there is clearly no consensus yet on who are the best players in this draft. Usually in the final few months a lot of the power rankings look pretty similar but right now before the Championships they are all over the place.

I'm pleased we're going after a mid, but it's hard to get excited by that for two reasons:

1. We'll always be up against it in terms of luring any decent players to NSW without paying overs.

2. I don't trust Horse to get the mix right even if another quality young mid was added to the ranks.

Horse has definitely improved in the last few years but he still does weird things. Like Hewett, Hewett should be our Kennedy replacement but for some reason he is playing some weird lock down roll in the defensive pocket, which is definitely not playing to his strengths.

Post draft I've always found his predictions to be pretty good in the washup as to where they're selected.

This. Any quality mid we get will play in the back pocket for reasons...
