The AFL mid season rookie draft will be held after the conclusion of Round 11, on Wednesday June 2. It is only open to clubs with inactive players on their list who have vacancies available.

Carlton currently has one selection in the draft with Caleb Marchbank having been ruled out for the year due to a ruptured ACL.

More information to come over the next few weeks including the final draft order.

How would you like us to approach the mid season draft?

- Charlie McKay (previously eligible F/S)
- Dominic Akuei (NGA)
- Best available kid
- Best available state league player
- Other

Also, which position (if any) do you think we should target specifically?

Without going into specific names, there are a few strategies in play here and it'll be interesting to see which way we go, as well as the other clubs.

Poll added to the OP.

This is more of a tangentially related observation than anything useful, but has the AFL assigned player numbers by height for those two teams? Looks that way....

So THAT'S why I wore 00 back when I played!

I voted for best available mature player, any being more specific I think it needs to be a defensive tall.
We dont have anyone in the reserves currently playing that position and if jones or weitering (touchwood) go down we are in a lot of trouble

Definitely agree. At the start of the year I thought we were 2 KPP short (1 each end). Need some immediate cover, kpf or kpd based on whoever is available, but they need to be ready to go.

We have played best when we have 2 kpd with 2 medium defenders and 2 kpfs with a med forward. Whenever we have played smaller we haven't looked as good and it has also resulted in a loss.

Currently only have De Koning in the 2s working his way back. Apart from that only have Kemp and Charlie in the works to return in the next 6 or so weeks.

Charlie McKay and Akuei are both excellent prospects, but not what we need for this current season. I'd be giving them guarantees that we will select them in the National Draft and convince them not to nominate is the mid-season rookie draft. 2 year deal through the Draft is better than the year-to-year rookie contract lottery.
Hopefully we then get to use 2 selections after our first rounder to bring them in. Both of those guys fulfil list needs going into 2022 and beyond.

Those links wind up being confusing... I take it the proposed changes were not adopted for 2021?

We should be looking to skim the best U20 talent available to us instead of waiting for the draft, and the U23 team lists being entirely composed of 18-20 year old players suggests that's exactly what the entire industry is thinking.

Alrighty... so looks like it's 3 spots we have available as of right now (C.Curnow, Marchbank, spare rookie slot).

Pretty sure we have just one spot available - for Marchbank.

Spare rookie was taken by OMac, whilst Curnow isn't on the inactive list.

3? There was a draft article a few weeks ago that said we only have one spot available, due to Marchbank, Charlie wont be far off playing by time the draft comes around.

Do we even have a spare rookie spot.

In a normal season, I would probably say recruit a mature-ager.

I think the odds of picking an undrafted kid (passed over for even a rookie spot) who then makes it properly at AFL level....that's quite a long shot. It can happen, but it's a low percentage play.

BUT THIS YEAR? When Vic kids missed the season and kids in other states had less than ideal preparation? Surely, this year would be the year when we would see some kids fall through the draft cracks only to make a name for themselves...

59 ND picks were used last year (ex-rookies). That compares to 65, 78 and 78 in the previous three years. That has to (ish) mean that there are more prospects than usual at the fringe this year.

I don't follow state or junior leagues well enough to suggest individual names. But as a general approach, this is the year I would pick best available u19.
