Losing newnes for nothing isn’t the right way to look at it.
We got rid of him and that in itself is a positive.
Dunstan just like newnes has the same issue. As long as he is on the list, the temptation will be there to play him with the justification of “it’s a must win game and he’s a senior body”.
Every game is a must win. As long as players like newnes and Dunstan stay on the list, we stifle the development of better young players. Even when they are depth.

An amusing snippet from the main Draft board after a Hawthorn fan said Battle might be useful to play a Gunston type roll ...
Re Battle..
"His family is a bunch of Hawthorn fanatics.
His old man is a clone of Derm, with the bleached blonde hair, pearly white teeth with a nickname Toss.
Absolute ripper fella."

Gee hope we are not judging him on those 2 games

And he didn't train as a defender Stewart66 said many times that he was training as forward leading out of the goal square next to King and S66 couldn't work out why they were playing him on the wing and training as a key forward
If - Membery goes down , his best replacement would be Battle and for a big guy his endurance is elite - but atm with Membery one of the key members of the squad - Battle can not take his position.
I just don't understand why we would get rid of a good young player that is 22 or 23 knowing he could have a breakout season.
Only have to look at Parish last year , no one wanted him , even was mentioned on here as a trade target but was referred to as a spud and then got his chance once they lost Shiel , Heppel , McGarth.
A lot of these kids have to mature and pressure next year could well bring out the best of him because if he doesn't perform his Career will be in limbo knowing his contract is up and could well end up in a State he doesn't want to be in.

Totally agree - we have for the last few years known our midfield was just not up to speed , the reason we picked up Crouch and Jones and tried for that kid from GWS last year - Ross , Dunstan were the midfielders that they upgraded and now with Clark , Gresham , Coffield , Bytel , Byrne and who knows who else could be in the mix is to get there turn.

It's stiff on Ross and Dunstan but in the end of the day it is about improvement and there disposal will never get better.

I fully understand Gringo about depth , but we have to keep upgrading until we hit a few gems like we did this year with Highmore , Byrne , Connolly ans Sharman - we do need to pick up a mid in the draft or a good young mid by trade but the way the recruiters have regenerated the list in such a short time is impressive.

Re getting nothing for Dunstan, let’s not forget that halfway through the season (or even at the start) his papers were stamped and he was going to be delisted anyway. He only got a game because injuries meant we would have had to list Daniel Wulf’s second cousin’s neighbour’s geriatric cat as a mid-season supplemental category Z rookie player to field a full team.

Good on him for grabbing the chance to draw interest from another/other AFL clubs. Reasonable minds may differ on the fairness of his treatment over the past couple of seasons, but I think most will agree he’s been a loyal servant of St Kilda since being drafted.

I wish him well at his new club.
Very well said.

I’m not super fussed to lose him. For free would be super disappointing. But either way I’ll be barracking for the madman in his new colours.

Will Minson?

**** YOU WILL!!

Lipinski? Never really noticed him before. Anyone got some strengths/weaknesses?

His strength is being the permanent next in line so it's assumed that given a run in the midfield that he could explode. He has experience so could cover the loss of a few more senior types. Don't know if he has much left to grow though.

He wasn't great but he adds the element of menace. He just looks like a psychopath when players are in his vicinity, he's like a swinging bag of hammers. Even if doesn't hit you you play looking over your shoulder. Him and Butler could both be upgraded but just menace factor adds something.

Agree, lifts intensity and for a side who plays so well with high pressure he's the one who sets the tone

A group of key players made an 11th hour bid to keep David Teague as coach earlier this week.

Although the last-ditch effort was ultimately unsuccessful, CEO Cain Liddle was left in no doubt that several important players would have preferred the board keep Teague for 2022.

Among the players to voice their support were the Curnow brothers, Sam Walsh, Harry McKay, Jacob Weitering and Nic Newman.

Could any of these guys be disgruntled enough to ask to leave.

No

fu** YOU WILL!!
Big ****in shit head

I'd be all for the club laying low this trade period, take our first round pick to the draft and get rid of a bit of deadwood for some 3rd or 4th rounders and back in what we have for 2022.

Next year we trade heavily for Ben King even if it's overs, do what is necessary to set us up for 2023 and beyond.

Call it a gut feeling but those two were delivered by Mrs King to deliver us a premiership.

SPINE:

Howard
Battle (This could be temporary since Carlisle/Frawley have retired, may as well give him a crack there)
Steele
Marshall
King
King

I feel like a broken record advocating to do whatever it takes to get Ben in but I feel so strongly about it. More than likely I've just convinced myself it's the only way forward so I doubt there's any changing my mind lol.
