I don’t think we really need to go after another ‘24th best player in a good side’. They very rarely magically transform into very good players.

Whatever pick we would use on Lipinski is better used at the draft.

Let Libba find us more gems.

I'm torn

I want us to go to the draft and get the best mid possible for our future. Then we have a crack at Bing next year.

It's the smart way to go about it, long term.

I also want us to cut some dead wood.

Part of me though wants to go hard after Parker and try and get Bing now. Couple of Firsts and Battle.

Try and strike next year. We've still got Ryder. If he and Marshall can get some games together they've shown they can be a formidable pairing. Players like Membery aren't getting any better. Max looks ready to go to me. And who knows, a miracle might happen and we could get some use out of Hanners in his last season.

I might be dreaming but i wouldn't be upset if we go hard. Might change my mind tomorrow though. 🤣

2 king boys up forward. Higgins Butler and Gresh at their feet. Sharman Marshall and Membery.

Parker in the guts with Steele Crouch and Jones. Hopefully Clark going well. Byrnes and Bytel too.

Backs look solid with Highmore a great addition. Paton back.

Good Rucks.

Call me crazy but it looks good to me.

Really I don't give a rats ass if we get him or not but 2 write off a 23yr who in one game against us took 10 marks and has picked 30 odd possessions in a game and can't get midfield time because guys like Dunkley are going to leave if they don't get midfield time and then they pick up that Treloar you can see why he wants out.

The same about Battle he is basically the same age and still has got massive scope.
Lipinski could well be last years Parish however no one wanted Parish and now he is a All Australian.

We don't have the draft picks or players to trade if we are going after a ruck /forward , picking a mid in the draft and trying to get Owens and Windbager - so Lipinski will go to a team who has got the collateral.

If we did have the currency, what would you give up for him?

Speed is overrated..not every mid needs speed..footy IQ is more important and you only have to look at guys like Bont, Macrae, Selwood etc..ofcourse not comparing Lipinski to these guns but no reason why he cannot thrive and be successful by playing as a pure midfielder who can occasionally go forward given his height.

Future 3rd..take it or leave and he can walk as a DFA or through the PSD

With development. We took Jack Steele from GWS. He was behind plenty of other mids. We developed him and gave him opportunities at the Saints. He is now better then all of the GWS mids.

Not saying that Lipinski is Jack Steele calibre, that’s up to the club to decide. But that would be the logic behind it.

Edit: IDK how to tag but Anythings_siposible beat me by about 30 seconds with this point 😂

Lipinski has had plenty of senior game time, he's way older than Bytel with more opprotunity , but performs similarly.
He started off pretty well, but has shown little sign that he's improving.

Comparing with Parish. Parish was inconsistent, but he started racking up contested possessions from the get go.

Something around the 30s , but it's just a guess or swap Lonie.
Lonie couldn't get a spot in any other team last year, which is why he stayed with the saints. interesting to see if anyone gives him an option.

Fair enough.
The we can spend most of next year debating whether Lipinski or Bytel should be playing. Fun times ahead.

Suppose they will give him a contract instead of giving him away for nothing, but he most probably wants to see if he can get more game time somewhere else.

I like Lipinski, speed or no speed, he can play the game. He's just unlucky to be at a side with 6-7 very good to elite midfielders. Would be an upgrade on Kent. Even if he only averaged 15-20 touches, his retention would be higher than Dunstan. If he comes across and he's not in our best 22, then we're in a good spot.
None of the saints mids are good disposers apart from Steele. Check out Jones, Dunstans & Crouch skill set. Gresham is not flash either and none of that group are quick off the mark apart from Jones although Gresh is a bit different. Lipinski worth a look, Steele was well back at the giants when we got him.

I actually think Jones has kicked the footy really well this year. He's kicking at 68% this year, up from 54% last year. Disposal efficiency can be a flawed stat for players who just chip it around or go for long kicks to a contest, which get recorded as an effective kick. Jones doesn't do that though. He is often running at full pace and goes for penetrating kicks far more than most of our midfielders. To be kicking at 68% is really good for a midfielder - particularly one that takes the game on as much as Jones. His clanger count is also down from 3.6 last year, to 2.8 this year, despite longer games meaning he finds more of the footy.

There was a bit of talk when Rath came over about his specialisation at refining players' kicking technique. I wonder if he's had an impact with Jones.

Having guys fighting for a spot is exactly where you want to be.
Rather than this year when a bloke as limited as dunstan was clearly the best option we had.

We had Kent - Lonie - Long - Butler fighting for a spot lol

How old was Steeley when we got him?

How old is Lipinski?

(20 v 23, 17 games v 49 for those playing along).

Lipinski is the Shane Birss for a new generation ;)
Never heard of him.

And I’m definitely not saying he will be anywhere near Steeles level,
Just comparing for his preferred position the club he is at one of the strongest/deepest.
And I think he has more to show than he’s been able to at Footscray, the question is how much?

As Libba is the head of talent identification, if we choose to back his opinion then that includes trades for 24th best players in good sides.
We do need a couple more ready to go solders at any rate, and if we're planning to take our NGA's then we can spare a pick anyway.

We don't need ready made soldiers actually. The majority of the list is aged between 23 & 28.

We are very short on in young talent however... Max Heath at 18, Allison, Connolly & Byrnes (19), Coops & Winx (20).

We need to continue to bring more kids in through the draft IMO.

If Lipinski was a freebie then maybe, but he won't be so I'd prefer to hit the draft.
