Something around the 30s , but it's just a guess or swap Lonie.
A pick around 30 or a lonie swap are miles apart , lucky to get a fourth for lonie and Lipinski is no where near a secound round pick , third at best IMO

Riddle me this... how do we beat the bulldogs if we take their 8-9th best midfielder and he is in our best 4-5?

I guess because people believe that given a run at a full time mid spot he could be as good as their established talent.

different positions, kent gets a hard wrap but he's pretty handy as a transition player. lipinski is a midfielder, are we really gonna do the same old of playing midfielders in the forwardline?
Lipinski can play high half forward as an additional midfielder and link player between the arcs if he is more midfield oriented.

The rotation would work, playing forward wouldn't mean he sits and waits in a pocket.

Still nothing on Billings and Ross - having not signed as yet they must be looking at other options.
I'm very impressed that we've offered JB a 4 year deal on less than he wants. He's got to forgo his prime earning years and dedicate to the club and group and can't hedge his bets with another 2 year deal.
Elite contract handling by Gags there.

Not necessarily throwing my hat in the ring for Lipinski, but Jack Steele was the 8-9th best mid at the Giants when we got him, and he's turned out OK.

Steele would have been 20 years old and 2 years into his career though. Lipinski must be mid 20s by now. He's been around a long time.

As Libba is the head of talent identification, if we choose to back his opinion then that includes trades for 24th best players in good sides.
We do need a couple more ready to go solders at any rate, and if we're planning to take our NGA's then we can spare a pick anyway.

Unless it's Gubby trying to look busy.

We don't need ready made soldiers actually. The majority of the list is aged between 23 & 28.

We are very short on in young talent however... Max Heath at 18, Allison, Connolly & Byrnes (19), Coops & Winx (20).

We need to continue to bring more kids in through the draft IMO.

If Lipinski was a freebie then maybe, but he won't be so I'd prefer to hit the draft.
It would depend on cost. Our 3rd round pick for example will be lost to NGA's so we may as well sell it off.

Lipinski has had plenty of senior game time, he's way older than Bytel with more opportunity , but performs similarly.
He started off pretty well, but has shown little sign that he's improving.

Pre-draft he was described :...
Summary profile: Athletic forward who can also push up through the midfield. High leaper who moves well.

One of the bulldog supporters made this comment after they drafted him, asked about his weaknesses.
" Main weakness is a bit too fold. Too slow to play outside. Not physical enough to play inside. That said his biggest strength is both his elite disposal in both in space and in congestion. If he can find some pace or become more physical in contests he'll become a genuine player. "

By contrast the Saints did well to spot Steele after his 17 games at AFL level.

Steele was already a well regarded player at under 18, he made the AA squad and was bid on at 16 by the Roos but went to Giants as an academy pick up at 24. We got into his ear at the right time with so many ahead of him.....most have since left.

One Minute

"You can never have enough mids"

"We must draft mids, mids, mids!"

"All the best teams have 12 blokes who can run through the middle"

Nek Minnit

Despite the fact we're likely to lose 2 of our current mids:

"Don't draft player X (mid from opposition club) because he will take games off player Y (another current St Kilda mid)"

Not against Lipinski has a skill set we need. He represents a point of difference to Steele and Crouch in the Midfield and King will appreciate his delivery inside 50. 5 years in the system means he should be ready train and play at AFL consistent level body has probably just about filled out on his 190cm frame. Probably wont get the disposal numbers of Dunstan or Ross but will make the ones he does get count. I haven't really watched him closely but always thought he looked like a damaging player and wondered why he didn't get more regular games. He is not necessarily a better player than Dunstan for example but he is probably a better fit.

He might not improve and remain a fringe player but has upside and seems like the right kind of target for us. Trade price will be the key though we tend to throw our future seconds every year maybe with some late picks coming back from the Doggies. I imagine Dogs see him like we see Battle surplus to needs but with some value to increase their draft hand.

I would also be into Chol is a UFA so free hit great athlete can play back up ruck with the ability to play up forward would be a big upgrade on Hunter and McKernan.

Lipinski is more like a glacial Brad Hill than Kent... really not what we need and we don’t have the right pick... if we get a pick in his range we should be taking it to the draft or chasing a player who actually fills a role we need.

FMD battle is a great user of the ball too and is much more versatile than Lipisnki, we’re pissing into the wind if we swap those two just because we can.
Lonie + Change for Lipinski.
The Dogs were keen on Lonie I believe.

Both fringe players who'll benefit from a change of scenery

What have they got that we want, no picks that’s for sure.
Lynch + something else? Sier maybe?
Would still prefer we keep Battle but if it is a must trade then could have a little bit of upside. Not sure they have much else to part with that they would be willing to

Yeah, I think Steele may have been 21 (was maybe drafted as an overager?), but I get your point.
I guess I was more trying to make the point that being a non-best 22 midfielder, or even a non-best 22 player for that matter, doesnt necessarily mean that that player couldn't become better. More so when you're at a club that is stacked in that area.
I should probably also say that I have no idea about Lipinski or what kind of player he's like
Edit: i might be thinking of Dunkley with the over ager thing

They have quite a few we might want because they’re not short of young talent but I doubt a player swap is what we have in mind if we trade battle. Sier is just a straight up no and Lynch will be staying because Cox is going and at some point maybe they want to shed the million they pay Grundy.
