Haha, what a disaster it would be if we brought in an elite mid who never misses games without having to pay a draft pick o_O
Because Luke Parker at 700/750k a year for the next 4 years makes us a contender.

but each to their own.

I doubt many people would be keen paying 100k for a commodore that has done 300,000 KMs but has a clean bill of health.

most mechanics would probably tell you that you could spend your money in better ways with less of a risk and it seems the club has a similar mindset.

SAINTS RULE OUT INTREST IN PARKER
St Kilda has ruled itself out of any interest in free agent Luke Parker, who is intent on considering his options given only a two-year offer from the Swans.

Parker won the Sydney best-and-fairest this week and is looking for a four-year deal worth around $700,000 a season.

Sydney has offered only two years at around $500,000-$550,000.

At this stage Gold Coast is considered making a play but Parker turns 29 in October and the Suns are more focussed on key forwards.

Parker would be a strong fit for a club such as St Kilda which believes it is opening up a premiership window.

But the Saints are looking to keep cash for a bid for Ben King next year.

The Saints hoping for seasons from Hunter Clark and Jade Gresham next year to reinvigorate a midfield that dropped out of the top eight for contested possession differential and clearance differential.

St Kilda’s Dan Hannebery is believed to have made a financial sacrifice that could help the club’s cap space given only 15 games in three seasons.

But despite speculation he might have split next year’s money into the 2022-23 seasons, it can be confirmed his guaranteed contract will expire at the end of next year.

It means the Saints have only one more year of a deal that when struck was to be a five-year deal but ended up at four years on over $700,000 with a fifth-year trigger.

Opinions are split on Parker’s worth given he turns 29 before next season.

He is a stoppage beast who can kick 20 goals a season and never misses a game but some list bosses will worry that without pace he could hit a wall at 31 and leave them with a big wage bill in his last seasons.

So an article without even a mention of "sources close to the club......", "club officials who wish to remain anonymous...."

Nice little smokescreen being put down by the club - done deal - Parker to Saints!!!!

When they haven't got it wrong, people get defensive.
Sinclair ahead of Hind and played his role far better than Hind
Hill ahead of Hind
Coffield ahead of Hind
Even Highmore who wsn't even at the club would be ahead of Hind.

Essendon had a need after Saad left. Hind has done well, but this trope that we stuffed up by not overpaying for a Sandy player is a bridge too foar AFAIAC.
Hind is ahead of Hill in just about every stat this year.

Hill has been very good in a handful of games when we are able to get the ball in his hands but Hind has been much more consistent.

Hind is also clearly a much better defender.

I don't see Hill as a long term defender, I just think he's too much of a liability in one on ones.

Anyway, back to Battle...

INTREST”?
My grandfather said the Herald Sun was a pile of cr*p.
Great to see the journos and editors are keeping that tradition alive.

Wasn't that hilarious? Freo getting their arses handed to them by a banged up Saints outfit and Johnson singing their praises over us saying things like, 'they have Cerra to come back into their team'

The toss is still so bitter of the Saints whacking his Bulldogs. Get over it man, your club has won a flag, and ours still hasn't, let it go.

…….many teams will be looking at Sharman ( who signed a few days before) 🤣

But that was high irony, yours was malicious and hatefilled and was one of the wost ommisions I have ever seen on a football forum, anytime in the history of the world.

High irony vs hi-perbole (sic) 🤣

As I’ve already said. There would have to be something monumental that occurs for him to leave this off-season.

ambassador payments. Suns needing to show they are legit andtrying to play finals in 2022 etc.

What I think will happen…

They’ll miss finals next year.
dew will get sacked
King and a few others leave
They poach Clarko and pretty much they rebuild again. But they have the GOAT of the modern era leading this rebuild. Probably have half the top 10 picks next year.

Can see this playing out exactly this way.
AFL and Clarko already probably done a handshake deal.
Thats why it’s important we use our pick this year in the draft to get the best kid we can.

So the player that we drafted as a flanker who may be able to make midfield, can now only play as a third rate , short, tall defender.

If that's true, he's a washout, time to cut our losses.

This is what we drafted.

STRENGTHS

  • Athleticism
  • Work in tight spaces/evasiveness
  • Efficiency
  • Versatility
  • Leadership
Coffield tested as one of the fastest players in the draft pool with a sub-three second 20m sprint time. Add to that his sizable vertical leap, 190cm frame and strong hands, and you have a ready-made AFL athlete. The most promising thing about Coffield is that he combines his athletic traits with a high-level football IQ, which has inevitably seen him draw comparisons to Scott Pendlebury.

Like the Collingwood skipper, Coffield provides a cool head amidst the mayhem of stoppages, weaving his way through traffic and turning on dimes. His clearance work has improved out of sight this year and more midfield time has really aided that side of his game. And with one of the most accurate kicks in the TAC Cup this season, Coffield’s efficiency has seen him stand out even more as clubs at the top level try to claim the best ball users.

Would love to see him develop as a winger. Tall wingers are all the rage, hence the Battle experiment. Coff is quick and agile tho

It’s the the most used tactic in world soccer.
The big clubs launch these types of campaigns in the media 12-18 months before a player actually joins.

plus, I bet you had no issue with the amount of pandering we did to Roo during his career.

we are talking about 2 generational talents at the club. I don’t think we have ever had 2. We had Lockett. We had Roo.

but never 2 locketts or 2 Rooeys.
Imagine in 04-10. One Rooey at half forward and the other deep. Sharman and Membrey legit become one on one threats. Higgins Butler Gresham get to run amok and have to worry about ensuring they are applying pressure for most of their deep 50 ball and Not worrying about when they get their next meal as there are 2 big talks that will attract so much attention that they just need to be at the fall of the ball half the time.
I don't appreciate you underselling the G-Train and Roo combination like that hahaha.

G-Train will always be generational in my eyes.

You know what’s really sad?
5 years of 50+ goals including a ton. 2 Coleman’s.

but the end just came about so quickly.

You must have missed a bit.
It says.

A club source known as Bird_man posted informed us that anyone 29 years old is too much risk.
In other breaking news, Saints are interested in trading their first round pick to get Nick Hind ( who is better than Brad Hill ) back.

I think a side like Melbourne are a good blueprint for us for looking at what you need to become a really good side.

I think Melbourne have four elite players (Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, May), supported this year by a system that allows other players to play to their potential.

I think the important thing for us is the elite players. At the moment we have one player that fits that category in Steele. We need to find three more elite players. If we have those players leading our team, other players will improve. I have no doubt we have the bones of a very good football team - in a good side, watch guys like Crouch, Jones, Wilkie, Membrey, Higgins excel. We have a lot of good players on our list.

The question is these three more elite guys that we need to find. The first obvious one is King. Then we need two more. Are they players on the list already? Are they players we hope to trade in, or are they players we hope to draft?

It is very, very hard to trade for this level of player, although there are some that have happened recently eg May, Cameron, Dangerfield, Neale. I think if we want to go for Parker it's because we think he can give us two years at the elite level, lifting us up to a top four team.

The others on the list that could be it are Marshall, Clark, Coffield (some will scoff but he has the tools in my opinion) and Gresham. Clark and Coff are high-level draft picks that haven't reached their peak yet. Gresham hasn't because of injury. Marshall has shown signs that he can be elite. Relying on them to make that jump though is a risk.

This is an important draft for us. We'll hopefully pick up a gun first round pick and get some good value NGA kids. Then in a few years one of those players at least can hopefully be a gun. But in the meantime, I wouldn't mind us grabbing an older guy that can instantly be top level and it just takes a little bit of pressure off our current kids to make that jump.

The players that I'd look at are either Parker or Guthrie because they don't cost draft picks.

When I look at our list I think it's a myth that we are old. In fact, in some ways we are too young and lack experience. We will most likely take at least three 18 year olds at this years draft, and we will have quite a young list again by the start of next year.

I don't think we should be averse to picking up an older player for that reason. We are too many elite players short of really competing right now, but get one in through free agency, then if King and/or Marshall, Clark, Gresh or a surprise packet make a big leap next year, we are suddenly pushing top four. Then we develop the current crop of youngsters whilst still competing now.
