AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
Would you prefer we draft someone in the 4th and 5th rd too?So we're in the 3rd proper offseason of our rebuild, have gone 19W 42L in the last 3 years, and we're drafting only two players with 2nd and 3rd rounders?
What makes you think putting Seedsman on the list is treating him poorly?I think our current situation requires a Spackler transcript Drugs Are Bad Mackay?
I’d love to be a fly on the wall if Roo, Reid and Kelly were asked to explain our plans to the board. This is my half arsed attempt.
“We don’t have list spots, so we are going to have to delist a player and put them on the rookie list”
“That means someone might pick them up right if they are any good?”
“Well we plan on doing it to Seeds, no one will want him”
“What you mean the guy who suffered concussion whilst employed by us and has been dealing with it all year? You want to do that to him?”
“Ok Strachan then”
“But we don’t have a back up ruck. Plus I’m a little confused, why don’t we have list spots?”
“Most of our squad is contracted”
“So this has been your strategy all along? Delist a contracted player and move them to the rookie list? What was the strategy if we got Hopper, JHF or another decent player?”
“No we were hoping someone would take one of our contracted players we didn’t want. As for those players, get real, we can only focus on one player at a time and we were busy with Rankine arguing about a late pick swap”
“Oh that’s reassuring, why didn’t anyone want our contracted players”
“They aren’t very good, no one wanted them”
“But you thought they were good enough to give a contract to beyond this year?”
“Ummm yep, but on the bright side we won’t have this problem next year, we have lots of players out of contract”
“Oh that’s a positive, so you’ve got average players we can delist, lucky none of the good ones will be out of contract, give me some names”
“Well Fog is on the list, but he’s only had half a decent season”
Olsen “You clowns are ******* useless, get me Jason Cripps”
So is the sticky post from Scorpus missing Turner from the 2022 list? That one only goes up to 44 and has 5 rookies. The list mathematics, as of today...
Start position: 37/6/2
Brown, Rowe, Frampton, Davis, Turner: 34/4/2
Rankine: 35/4/2
Future moves:
Strachan, Butts upgrade: 37/2/2
2x ND selections: 39/2/2
The most we can have on our senior list is 38... so someone else needs to go.
Huh!What makes you think putting Seedsman on the list is treating him poorly?
If that was the thinking, then the entire football department need to be sacked. We knew Matt Crouch and Hately would be ineligible for SANFL finals so drafted Turner to improve our chances of a SANFL flag
In that case we should be going to the AFL and demanding we be allowed to pay him out outside the cap and retire him..Dollars is the problem . He has a contract which won’t fit in this years cap
nah, that is not rightDollars is the problem . He has a contract which won’t fit in this years cap
No he is contracted for next year so the money goes against next years.nah, that is not right
the money is there whether he plays or not.
We could always delist crouch and put him on the rookie list. No chance anyone poaching him. I mean we've let him go to the market and asked about trading and no one bit so should be pretty safe.
Crikey, take a guess. What makes you think putting Seedsman on the list is treating him poorly?
Crikey, take a guess.
Putting him on the rookie list doesn’t actually change anything for him personally.Huh!
Drafting a slow, unathletic, non-contested small forward is bad enough in the rookie draft let alone the main draft. Arguing over second/third rounder is pointless, it was poor drafting full stop.
I'm more pissed we blew games on him especially late in the year when we 100% knew he was getting delisted.

He'll still receive a negotiated settlement. Likely to be less than his full 2023 contract, but still significant.… but if he called the shots on his retirement wouldn’t that cancel out his contract

So why Seedsman and not another player?Putting him on the rookie list doesn’t actually change anything for him personally.
Yes. Indeed, we may have to do just this.We have a glut of players we could delist and promise to pick up in rookie draft with the hope someone picks them up before us. Seedsman, McAsey, McPherson, Murphy, Crouch. Are we allowed to do that?
Good lurkHe'll still receive a negotiated settlement. Likely to be less than his full 2023 contract, but still significant.
I’d argue that AFL ruckmen absolutely grow on trees. I’d think that most clubs number one ruckman started off at a different club and every year there seems to be major movement of ruck stocks during trade week. The risk is waaaay too high that we'd be gazumped, with another club drafting him before we can re-draft him - as happened to GC with Greenwood. Strachan has shown enough at AFL level to attract the attention of other clubs, and AFL ruckmen don't grow on trees.
Note that our only other rucks are ROB, Berg and TT - so the inability to re-draft him would leave our ruck stocks in a perilous state, to say the least.
If someone gazumps us on Strachan, then we'd need to find another ruckman with one of our 2x ND picks, or our only RD pick. If there are worse options than letting Strachan go, then I don't want to think about what they are. It's a terrible idea.I’d argue that AFL ruckmen absolutely grow on trees. TT and Berg would be absolutely fine as back up rucks… it’s not like we’ll be competing for a finals spot/flag only to have our season derailed because of O’Brien going down with injury. Also, Strachan isn’t so good that he couldn’t easily be replaced at the mid-season draft or during next years trade period.
If we do need to open up one more spot in our list, there are worse options than letting Strachan go.
Yes - both have already maxxed out their permitted 4 years on the rookie list. The only other alternative is to delist them, and then re-draft them again - and both would be a very good chance of being gazumped. Both are contracted for 2023.Do we have to upgrade Butts and Strachan?
No current season stats available
