What parts of the Benning discussion haven't been mature?
Treacy and Benning are both a waste of space. Treacy has been on the list for two seasons and hasn't won a Coleman yet, and I'd expect Benning to be dominating WAFL by now.

Sell them both off for whatever we can get.

After re-reading mainly this one. I jumped the gun at how many likes it recieved and assumed a lot of people thought it was rediculous to question why a bloke who is averaging 10 touches and 0.1 goals a game in wafl reserves is safe where others aren't.

Pretty sure that post you're quoting is sarcasm...

It is sarcasm but i feel like taking the piss out of an opinion like that is trying to shut down the discussion as silly. But you are right I have probably been a little defensive here.

Sorry mate, was not meant to offend. More a light hearted jab at those on here who judge players way too early, especially young talls.

Benning will not be being assessed on his impact on games at the moment. He will have very specific KPIs around diet, fitness and training with a view to building an AFL body. After a full pre-season next year we can start to see if he can influence games.

Trust me, he is very safe at the moment.

with English re-signing, wonder if we still warrant a "Freo Loses Another Big Fish' article in the West* or are we past that these days?

*even though we didn't seem that into him though that never seemed to matter

And that's exactly what's needed for a project like Benning - clear personal targets and demonstration of an attitude and approach to make it in the AFL.

Equally there also has to be the ability to cut your losses and know when you're better off moving on, and as we know clubs have to be ruthless in this space, so the discussion around what's good enough is certainly reasonable from a fan point of view.

Where clubs could run into issues is if there's a lack of alignment on the time and resources needed when recruiting a particular prospect.

When’s the last time we cut a main list draftee after 1 year or even 2 years without rookie them?

Alex Forster was 2 years off the top of my head. I recon he’s probably got 3 minimum unless he doesn’t put the effort in.

I'm assuming the discussion of Neale is really related to his partner & co.
With a young child and lack of direct support, either his partner or her family might be wanting them to move back to WA.
That starts conversations, regardless of what Neale, his manager or Freo might be saying.

Neale is a great player, but probably even more so than last year we just don't need him.
After copping the criticism he did and then coming out strongly saying we’re committed to the contract in full to me says he is staying out for 2023. They had a look considered trade, copped widespread criticism (even abuse) and then came out publicly declaring he is fulfilling his contract in full.

I can’t now see him going against that. They have accommodated their new family with visits from Jules parents etc. come end of 2023 when he is out contract then sure we can have a look.

We would get absolutely reamed by Brisbane if we chase him in contract and if the growing rumours are correct that we are having a crack at Jackson then there is no chance he comes.

I also read that the club is very likely to sign Mundy on for another season. For mine that rules out Neale (and Angus Brayshaw) and I’m fine with that.

The only scenario where I’m comfortable with Jackson coming across is if the main trade pieces involves a first and Lobb.

My preference is we lay low, keep Meek and Lobb, instigate a trade involving us getting Zuuhar (whilst trading out Tucker for more opportunities) and then going back to the draft using our first pick and later picks for any academy or sliders.

The likelihood of any player taken beyond the early rounds forging a significant AFL career is low. That probably increases significantly for tall players. I think the earliest you can make a judgement is the end of their first contract. Until then you'd just be looking for positive signs, certainly not anticipating a debut of anything.

Let's ignore everything else for a sec - Benning is contracted for next season.

History shows that unless he's causing problems with his attitude that would be enough to keep him safe. To my knowledge he isn't.

No need to apologise, I was being a bit too defensive reading back now.

I actually thought he was on the rookie list, as someone else pointed out he's contracted for next year, so he certainly will be on the list next season I would have thought.

Let's hope the lack of pre season is what is really holding him back, because I'm sure even the brightest optimist would expect more then he is delivering. Fingers crossed he improves in the second half of the season.

Well Jackson’s been great out around the ground.. but no marks no goals. Still want him for his ability to apply forward pressure.

Darcy looks like he enjoys kicking goals more than rucking, maybe we should get Jackson (who plays like Stephen Michael - more old school ruck rover than ruck) and turn Sean into Tom Hawkins.
