You think Newman was bad against GC? How so?

For 15 minutes in the 3rd quarter he was a headless chook, trying to square up after getting into a Barney earlier in the quarter.

Cost us goals & any momentum.

If last week put to bed any notion is that a tall ruckman isn't that important. If they don't win a contest, they are still more than likely to halve a contest giving neither mids an advantage, therefore allowing the better mids to win the contest.

People look at the low the tap to advantage stats as an indicator of how overrated ruckmen are, but I suggest halving a contest is an important when you have superior mids, like in our case.

Witts annihilated TDK in the ruck in which he was able to totally dictate where a ball will fall, almost always to a clear advantage to their mids. Pittonet is as important to our team as any player. With our mids he doesn't have to dominate, he just has to stop the other ruck from dominating the taps, therefore allowing our gun contested mids to do their work.

Plowman can't play the third tall role and if you don't have a third tall in your backline then you are in a lot of trouble.

We were so much better with McGovern in the team. Before that there was a run of games where Marchbank played and played well and it was a purple patch for us.

Plowman is more of a medium/small defender like Newman but when he is in our side he has been the third tall, but he doesn't play that way.

Third tall needs to be tall, play tall, take marks and spoil strongly. They need to have pace to make the contest and be able to give the talls a chop out. Play off their man, read the play, get in the hole and take intercept marks. Plowman lacks all of these qualities. He shouldn't be competing with our third talls who are McGovern, Marchbank and Parks. He is competing with guys like Newman, Docherty and Williamson and he's a fair way off their ability. It's not just an individual lock down role, it's an important part of a backlines team defence.

It is what it is. Regular injuries in this area have hammered us for years. This might be one of the list holes we look to fill come season's end. Parks is all we have right now and hopefully he can go well for us.

This is where we really need Marchbank and McGovern up and going.

I’m somewhat amazed Kemp isn’t being developed for this role

Tredrea to lace up and snag 8.
In a half. Then he dislocates his knee because why bother with opposition like that?

Then I meet friends for dinner. At Bell's pub which just happens to be Port's supporter base that day.

Top day all round really.

Will there be a Carlton shop at the G to buy some merchandise? Need to get the little one some suitable Blues gear.
best contact the club - or that stupid, overly emotive term "reach out"

Yeah, was there - and I'd forgotten that Bells was their home base! Good recall, AD!

JUst watched replay of Q3.

I agree he didn’t have a good quarter at all.

He wasn’t the only one to be fair.

I suggested here that Marchbank is a direct upgrade on Plowman and people told me they are much different players - granted, they are. One is very good at playing to his size, the other is not, and must play much smaller to have meaningful impact.

Can’t wait for Marchy to be back, 4 weeks according to the injury report. Probably need a couple weeks in the VFL too, but will be huge for us. McGovern should be back then too.
