And improves the vfl side with much needed experience.

Who cares about the VFL side. I don't.

If we use all 4 rookie spots for mature depth players it would be very poor list management as we need as much future talent as possible not old blokes. (we've tried that method and it failed miserably)

After we take 4 young blokes in the draft, surely the more depth the better. Playing kids over the last couple of years with no depth or pressure on for spots hasn't exactly worked in our favour either.

Depends on what you consider "depth".

I'm fine with under 25yo blokes coming in but not washed up blokes near or over 30.

There's been enough senior player in recent years - the problem is most haven't been very good, our average age in last few years has been higher than other teams on a regular basis.

We need to improve through the draft and getting fitter and stronger imo.

Tom Phillips is 26 so not exactly near or over 30. Personally though I'm not fan, at least not for our AFL list.

Ticks the 'played his best game for the year against us' box though:

Yeah that's fair, I'll sleep very easily if Turner or Walker don't get list spot's

Out of the names getting thrown around like Turner, Howe, Shiels and Phillips to fill up our extra rookie spots I'd hope we'd just go with two and leave the other two spots for someone like Brand delisted from Essendon and a project tall like Petric to take with pick one in the rookie draft.

I don't want Shiels anyway.

Do you?

I’d be annoyed if we were using our pitiful excuse for priority pick allowance to draft a guy that won’t play and will coach in our salary cap again. Especially as we’ll probably want to hold a pick over for the MSD.

meh, i'd rather give opportunities to the likes of Stocker and Stack on our rookie list over someone like Phillips

although I'll immediately contradict myself and say that i'd be open to the idea of Shiels and/or Howe

Agree with all of this.

As previously mentioned, Howe looks good but his career has been underwhelming. Change of scenery?

Stack has the highest ceiling by far, just need to get in a mentor for him

I'd rather none of them.

We have taken other teams discards for years and have unsurprisingly been utter rubbish as a team because of it.

We should be picking and developing our own talent, not relying on players other teams don't want and expect to improve to the level required.

Yeah, he's a bit of an odd one. Looks to have all the tools and at times has put up ridiculous possession numbers, but it seems he lacks ... something. Maybe some consistency and intensity? Not 100% sure, but I can see the logic in adding him to our rookie list

we're talking about senior players with some talent over the 60th/70th ranked kids in a super shallow draft -- the odds that we develop good players from that position, while not impossible, are super low, so we should be looking to use the rookie list as a means to alternate ends

as good as our young talent is, we still need some experience. Stocker and Stack I'm in favour of because they're both talented but still young enough to be in our long term plans

Shiels will set standards from the off and help guide our young mids

Am I right in thinking the reason we will take mature blokes in the rookie draft is that we can give them 1 year?

We can pad the list a bit and extend/upgrade anyone that proves themselves. I assume blokes playing for their careers will give an all mighty effort which is what we need right now.

I've changed my mind on the tom phillips situation.
If we've locked in our best 35 players and they'll compete for a best 22 spot every week, then spending 3-4 rookie spots on guys who'll be extreme bottom of the ladder depth but who will improve and bolster the VFL side seems ok.
VFL stability and development of the new players is something we desperately need. Can't expect 18yr old kids to compete against mid 20yr olds and get better at a rate that keeps them competitive.
Strong reserves sides create even stronger seniors.

I'd prioritise positional needs in that scenario. Some strong bodies KPPs, rucks etc if we want some capable 'break glass'/senior bodies running around in the VFL.

A guy like Tom Campbell is the perfect example of this type of player.

There's some decent state league guys that can play at either end of the ground.
Brisbane does this really well. They just seem to pick decent KPP out of nowhere once an injury happens.

Two options that would kill it, are Josh Walker and Jed Anderson.

Josh would be about the best full back in the vfl, he could hold that backline together for a year or two and Jed would dominate, and would be handy if we need senior experience in the afl too.

Whether they’d do it is another question.
