After having a little more time to think about it, I'd say other clubs in the twenties would've wanted a future 2nd for them and not interested in 40 and 43.
Bombers would likely only move 22 for a future 2nd or if a Davey bid comes before that forcing them to trade it.
Saints might be desperate enough to give Bombers a future 2nd.

Dammit, foiled by a future second yet again.

I’d be annoyed if we were using our pitiful excuse for priority pick allowance to draft a guy that won’t play and will coach in our salary cap again. Especially as we’ll probably want to hold a pick over for the MSD.

Having a coach on the rookie list allows us to pay over the soft cap for player development.

When it comes to MSD if we need a spot the coach simply retires.

Lions, Roos in pick swap talks as clubs assess draft hands

The Lions and Kangaroos could trade picks when the NAB AFL Draft gets underway

BRISBANE and North Melbourne are in discussions on a picks trade that could be made at the start of the opening night of the draft after the window to swap selections closed on Tuesday.

The Roos made the final trade of the post-trade period and pre-draft picks swap window, swapping out their No.43 pick for a future fourth-round pick from Fremantle, which is tied to Hawthorn’s ladder position.

North holds picks No.2, 3 and 23 and will use its fourth and final national pick on father-son prospect Cooper Harvey.

It meant the Roos were looking to trade their picks in the 40s for future selections and keep a late pick to grab Harvey, the son of North Melbourne champion Brent. They were able to do that with Fremantle, while discussions with Brisbane could also see the Roos move out pick 40.

A deal involving pick 40 for a future third-round selection from the Lions as well as a later pick in this year's draft to use on Harvey has been worked through, which would give Brisbane important additional points to match bids on father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions would be able to strike a deal as soon as the draft starts on Monday, November 28 to bolster their points ahead of the bids.

Freaking about every single trade before all is done is moronic. Just wait to assess after the draft period and most of you won't look like such turnips in retrospect.
Yeah but objectively pick 43 for future pick 55-60 is not great even if you weren't going to use 43.
Ideally you get a future 3rd swap rather than a future 4th. Could they have traded 40 and 43 with the Lions for two future 3rds?

Will admit, I don't see the logic behind the Freo trade, but I'm sure its there somewhere.

Sure we MIGHT use another 4th next year, but I doubt it.

So how are Brisbane selecting 6 players on draft night when everything is eaten on Ashcroft + Fletcher?

4 picks in the rookie draft?
I may be completely wrong, but I feel like I heard a few years back, if you used all your live picks for matching bids etc. You get new picks created at the end of the draft after everyones done with their picks to ensure that you take the minimum 3 picks.

Again, could be completely wrong, and if anyone knows where to read the relevant rule, I'd love to look into it.

Brady is like that girl in the queens gambit who gets high and stares at the ceiling for what moves to make. Only makes sense to him lol.

It also means we have one less rookie to choose from.

I suspect the MSD has less talent than the rookie picks.

I'm not a fan of the approach but others might disagree and that's fine.

But wait

There's more

I'm fairly unimpressed by Rawlings's ability to manipulate the draft system to benefit us.

If this proposed trade with Brisbane was done today we wouldn't need Brisbane's late pick coming back as we would be able to take 70 to the draft instead of their pick 73. Or if it was done instead of the Freo trade we could have taken 43 to the draft instead of 73, and maybe live traded that for Brisbane's other spare F3.

Or if we opened up another list spot or two we could have maybe live traded 43 to Essendon with our F3 for 22. Instead we are the only team, other than Adelaide and Geelong, likely to fill our primary list despite being given extra rookie spots which should make things easier for us. If someone we rate slides, we can't take them or we risk losing Cooper. We have basically locked ourselves into a list break-up and can't vary it if an opportunity arises at the draft. Why?

None of this stuff matters much, it is much more important to choose the best players, but they are small advantages we could take and are just watching them pass us by.
