If we use our first on a key defender I will spew up.
If Busslinger actually reaches our pick then it means that our midfielder choices are a lot slimmer with McKenzie, Clark. Humphrey all likely gone.
If they're off the board, then I'd rather take the better prospect and player then pick a midfielder who may be of similar quality at our next pick.

I think the Brad Hill situation is really interesting.

If we look at it on its own it's a poor trade. It was part of a big trade period for us when we got the following players, and here's how I'd summarise it:
Howard - tick
Butler - tick
Ryder - tick
Jones - ? (terrible this year but good otherwise)
Hill - fail because of the price and salary

I've actually enjoyed watching Hill at times for us, he's a great player when he gets going but his major issue is that he is the most uncontested player I have ever seen. With that in mind it was a terrible trade because we didn't realistically get the player we needed and we failed to realise how poor he would be in that area. However, he has played some brilliant games for the club, unfortunately he has struggled with consistency for most of the three years.

In the second part of this year I think he really checked out and just lost so many critical contests within games. It must have been hard for him and his teammates. We are a contested team and when you lose nearly every one on one contest you're in it's detrimental for the team.

So the Hill move has been poor but I think it's a good sign that the recruiters are willing to wear it and try to continue to improve. The trade period he came in was a success. But I also am sure that Hill would be looking around for other clubs with our blessing because we realise he does not fit our team at all, and I think as supporters we need to realise this, North aren't coming to poach him so we can not hold them to ransom. The deal will be for a third rounder or worse, if we get a second rounder I'll be stoked but absolutely shocked.

I think the recruiters have also realised that going for these big recruits that cost picks is fools gold. If the Pies or Tigers have to go for Taranto they'll be paying two first rounders. If we get De Goey it will cost nothing. That is how we should be building our team from now on, Hill was an error but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater we need to keep getting better and we won't be the first or the last team to dump a players salary that we don't want.
This year we may of fixed our problem in our midfield however we will need to give the kids time to develop and in the mean time DeGoey type is needed to fix it , if we don't get him I wonder who else could become available.

Busslinger may not even get to us , but whatever happens I feel they will take the most highly rated pick at the spot.

You'd want anyone to be a gun with a top 10 pick.

Been a few handy key defenders taken in the first round of late though

That Paddy McCartin bloke looks like a great get for the Swans, if only we could draft a key defender as good as him.

Good post. I remember at the time telling someone at work that you shouldn't look at the individual trades but the total value. We went into trade week with a first round pick and two fourths and had to find a way to get five players in.
Also take into account that the pick 10 used in the Hill deal was acquired in the swap of 6 for 12&18, which became 10, Howard and Ryder.
I know there were other later picks used but our first and second plus Acres for Hill, Howard and Ryder wasn't that bad a deal.

There is but that almost means the law of averages says ours will be a superspud. He looks good but his highlights package is from Colts level.

Busslinger looks good but they have much higher bust factor. His name sounds like it would go well with Windhager though.
Busslinger and Windhager…
Sounds like a cowboy duo.

This club has conditioned you to believe that we must pay ridiculous overs to get players in but anything going out should be a punishment as well. If we wanted Hill from another club in the same position we'd hope to get him cheap but we'd accept that it's not certain.

He literally cost us the Kosi Pickett pick, Blake Acres, a future second and future 4th round pick.... to walk away with a pick in the 30s would be absolutely embarrassing. The club still has to sell this to the members as a positive, and if we are to believe that we aren't tight in the cap it doesn't make sense to cull him for what ever we can get.

They need to channel Bell and Dildo.
I hear Dodoro has bought a place in Elwood…..

Not sure why you keep saying they have much higher bust factor. When you go through the drafts key defenders in the first round look pretty safe.

Sure there are some busts amongst them but no more than other positions.

2021: Gibcus, Aleer
2020: Granger-Barass, Chapman
2019: McAsey*, DeKoning
2016: Logue
2015: Weitering, McKay
2014: Moore, Lever, Marchbank* (injuries)

To me it looks pretty safe to take key defender in the first round.

So far McAsey looks the only bust, along with maybe Marchbank due to injuries

I may have missed a few scimming through the drafts and also haven't include players like Naughton and King who played in defence as juniors and went forward or McCartin who was drafted as a forward and is now in defence

Even Naughton looked really good in defence in his first season at the Bulldogs

I just mean that Pies will want something for him. If they don't get compensation then they will match. We have to trade and don't get the benefit of picking up a free agent
I don't think they'll match. DeGoey isn't going to come to us because he wants to, it'll only be because Collingwood won't give him a deal like we will offer him.

This is just my opinion, of course. But all things considered I don't think he wants to leave the Pies. Money may do it.

He’d wanna be Steve Silvagni crossed with Matthew Scarlett for pick 9
So does a midfielder have to be Greg Williams crossed wirh Chris Judd

Or a forward Plugger mixed with Riewoldt?

The Chances of getting anyone that good with pick 10 is low, no matter what the position

I doubt too many of the club's that have taken key defenders in the last 7 or 8 years are regretful

nope because pretty good midfielders turn games. Don’t know too many ‘pretty good’ defenders who turn games. Paddy Mccartin couldn’t get near it as a forward and has had multiple concussions yet everyone lauds how good he is a key defender. Waste of a top 10 pick to spend it on a key defender.
