I wonder if having Lenny Hayes to coach next season could lure one of the gws mids like Taranto to think more seriously of coming to the Saints?
I think we should avoid guys like Taranto that we need to trade for. That's how we got into the Hill mess. Free agents please.

It is the choice that we make is the thing to discuss. If we make a late second, I agree with gringo and Lethlean and Gallagher should be immediately sacked.
We need to trade fairly but we hold the cards. As I said their proposed PP (around 20) and they take 700k of a 900k salary and we deal. Not ideal considering we paid so much for him, but that would satisfy both parties and we move on.

In isolation that would give us picks 9, 19, 28, 46 and an extra 1.4 mill in the kick.
Which is not going to happen because neither of them are stupid.
Let’s remember how well they played Adelaide for Brad Couch. It was a masterclass.

If we’re trading for another key back (which I doubt) it’s not gonna be for depth.

You don’t trade for a key position player then have them in the twos in case of injury unless it’s a botched trade.

We have doogs, Battle and Wilkie if we need depth get some state leaguer in the pre season draft.

Phillips from Port Melbourne. He looks ideal. Made the VFL TOTY.

The best key defender comes in around our pick , Buslinger comparable to Naughton.

There is an art to the spill. Hayes actually has that ability. If he isn't marking it he's already plotted where to let it fall to a small. That's forward craft and exactly the sort of thing a great forwards coach should teaching Max to do. Max tends to mark or let it go past him and stand there looking pissed off.

It should come with experience but why not fast track him.
It's not easy in a 3 or 4 on 1 tho, which is often the position he finds himself in

Being back up depth seems like the perfect role for Joyce.

De-list Joyce and you need to either do a like for like replacement or you create issues with someone like Battle by trading in his "replacement".

Everyone seems to be pretty certain North are getting an end of first round pp????
Why???
Because the AFL would’ve had a nudge, nudge, wink, wink agreement with Clarko.

According to previous use of priority picks, I think (not 100% certain) that clubs usually had to be at the bottom for more than two years, especially considering their fall was self-inflicted due to the way they gutted their list.

But we all know how the AFL operates - a law according to themselves.
So they’ll get it, probably on the proviso that they have to trade it for a good player, which could suit us perfectly!

Yeh that’s fair, wouldn’t object to drafting and developing but we’re surely not gonna trade for a player to stick in the twos just in case.
Or we could trade in a young developing key defender that may be depth but also a chance to come on and push their way into the best 22

IMO, just pretend like this is a viable trade, it would be a lose lose.

How do we navigate the fact that pies get no concession because they are getting McStay? Do they make sure lions match?
If DeGoey leaves he would not give a Rats what the Pies get.
To me it is still up in the air if he stays or goes , but his latest adventure in Bali might of caused fiction at the club that he may want to move on from.

I think the Brad Hill situation is really interesting.

If we look at it on its own it's a poor trade. It was part of a big trade period for us when we got the following players, and here's how I'd summarise it:
Howard - tick
Butler - tick
Ryder - tick
Jones - ? (terrible this year but good otherwise)
Hill - fail because of the price and salary

I've actually enjoyed watching Hill at times for us, he's a great player when he gets going but his major issue is that he is the most uncontested player I have ever seen. With that in mind it was a terrible trade because we didn't realistically get the player we needed and we failed to realise how poor he would be in that area. However, he has played some brilliant games for the club, unfortunately he has struggled with consistency for most of the three years.

In the second part of this year I think he really checked out and just lost so many critical contests within games. It must have been hard for him and his teammates. We are a contested team and when you lose nearly every one on one contest you're in it's detrimental for the team.

So the Hill move has been poor but I think it's a good sign that the recruiters are willing to wear it and try to continue to improve. The trade period he came in was a success. But I also am sure that Hill would be looking around for other clubs with our blessing because we realise he does not fit our team at all, and I think as supporters we need to realise this, North aren't coming to poach him so we can not hold them to ransom. The deal will be for a third rounder or worse, if we get a second rounder I'll be stoked but absolutely shocked.

I think the recruiters have also realised that going for these big recruits that cost picks is fools gold. If the Pies or Tigers have to go for Taranto they'll be paying two first rounders. If we get De Goey it will cost nothing. That is how we should be building our team from now on, Hill was an error but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater we need to keep getting better and we won't be the first or the last team to dump a players salary that we don't want.
