Nice idea, but Long and Hill were both played at Half back last year and we lost a few games on the back of their contributions alone.

Ben Long is much better up front; he takes chances, some work others don't, but down back that risk leads to opposition scoring.

We're just starting to see something from him, but guess we'll have to watch him turn the corner wearing McDonald's colours.
Nar. Hill in the backline is a disaster. He totally disrupts the cohesion and number of time he and long ran into each other those games is testament to it. But it was Longy that got moved out.

Short memories.

I prefer my version. You can keep believing the players are to blame.
Long had plenty of opportunities to prove himself.

He was given the full 2020 season where he was ok but never really got going

He was then given the role again in 2021 but his form wasn't good enough and was rightfully dropped.

As a rebounding defender he's managed to get over 20 touches just once in his career.

As a small forward the most goals he's ever kicked is 2.

I'm more than happy to call out t he coach when they deserve it but Long has been given every opportunity

Am I the only one who prefers Lienert over both Hill and Long in the backline? Not to mention Coff if he can get back to 2020 form.

I also prefer DMac, NWM and Wood as our wingers over Hill.

Happy to have Owens/Windy/Butler take all of Longys minutes up forward.

The only player on the table I'd be sad to see go is Clark.

The turnover this year could look like this:

OUT: Ryder, Hill, Long, Hannebery, Geary, Kent, Joyce, Kyle

Apart from Ryder, I feel like we've lost nothing of any onfield significance.

We already have Picks 9 and 28, if we could bring in two more top 30 picks that would be a good injection of young talent. Fit and firing Gresh, Coff and Clark can see a lot of improvement to our second half of the season.

We just got to keep going back to the draft.

We'll have to disagree on 2020. I thought he was very good, and we know he does more than what the stat sheets reflect so l don't accept that argument.
We will find out next season what his real value is. ASAIC right now it's a phuk up.

Maybe, just maybe, Longy wants a change of scenery.

After 6 years, and without nailing down a spot, perhaps he thinks a move may be his best career option.

We don't have to take everything as a slight on the club or consider it a failure by the club.

If we can somehow turn Coff into a Jarrod Berry... geez we'd have one.

P.S refresh your memories with this gem and tell me you're not excited to have Jack Hayes back into the 22 with big Ro!!! 😍

We just got to keep going back to the draft.

Two key defenders ( Howard and Battle ).
4 others. Maybe one on the bench.
Sinclair , Wilkie, Webster , Paton , Coffield, Highmore and Lionert trying to get a spot.

Others who can play HBF. Hill, Clark, Jones, Wananeen-Milera , Connolly , even Ross.

Wonder if a straight swap for Fiorini would fly.

Coff is a completely different player to Berry.

I don't see him ever turning into him

I also like Lienert, but we were asking him to play a role way beyond his means at the end of this season. He is younger than Jimmy Webster.

Add him to the growing recent list of players who do nothing on our list only to forge a much better career at other clubs afterwards.

Tom Hickey
Blake Acres
now Ben Long

and I don't think it will stop there either.

I have gone on about him enough but I will reiterate - I saw him as a future leader at the club, loved his work up front, less so down back but his tackling game was a joy to watch. One of the few players who offer genuine toughness and could fly the flag better than most.

The club didn't exploit his value as a player, didn't see his value as a leader and had rocks in their head letting his contract run down. He'll go and we'll get nothing for him then watch him and Gold Coast suppass us without even one moment of reflection.

Infuriating.
It's amazing that you have a list of three players that have kicked on since leaving us.
One has already left the club he joined when he left us.
One isn't wanted by the club he joined.
And the other hasn't even left yet.

Yeah, just wishful thinking based on the fact they're both 192cm and 90kg haha. Whack Coff in the gym and get them to play a similar role :tearsofjoy:
Go back and watch some of his games in the back end of 2020, especially the second half against the doggies in the elimination final, if we can get that player back we are laughing.

A legit intercepting gun that can also provide run, he offers something that we did not have this year. Wouldn't be trying to reinvent him personally.

Really disappointed Longy is going. I rated him higher than many here, and not just after his last game. Think he showed signs this season of what he could become.

More damage will be done by having an inept coach before ratten goes.

Big Footy: Ratten is an inept coach who can't develop players.

Last night: Best and fairest winner credits Ratts with pushing him to change and improve.

Could we look at a player swap for Long potentially? How do Gold Coast rate Sam Flanders? Pick 11 2019, absolutely tearing it apart in the VFL as a impactful midfielder. Kicks goals, essentially another Windhager type player from the sounds of things. May have to throw in a future 2nd or 3rd on top to make it work
