So if he is worth pick 20 why trade him for Hugh Goddard or Luke Dunstan?

Insane
I love trade time when everyone has watched draft day. Hunter Clark is a litmus test for this club, Imo if we trade him out especially for unders then expect the next ten years to be pretty much the same as the last ten.

I mentioned Bowes because he and Clark are equivalents. Both Top 10 picks who were expected to become midfielders but after 5 years are still hbf's.

I did say disregard his salary but clearly you missed that - so I'll ask again. If Bowes was available for trade (not a salary dump) what would you give up for him?

Once you answer that question you then Clarks starting value - Pick 20 if we're lucky.
So salary out of it you would do a straight swap ? Most wouldn’t.

I think anyone who would give up 9 and Long for 7 and Bowes are completely nuts.
Bowes will be a VFL player on 800k earning more then our best players... a massive liability for us to take on with pick 7 dangled out as a bribe.
So why sabotage our list and cap for a mere 2 pick upgrade while essentialy giving Long away for free? Doesn't make sense.

Long and a second rounder for 7 and a Sandringham Back Pocket on 800k is as reasonable as it gets... anything more is self sabotage.

You’d have to worry about that becoming toxic though wouldn’t ya?
I mean, a Sandy back pocket on 800k wouldn’t sit too well
With a lot of the boys you would imagine.
Hopefully Bowes is a bit better than that though. Or worse if he goes to another club.

See that's the thing - what exactly would we lose by playing either Bowes or Clark. Very little I suspect

They both average 18 possessions a game (6 contested 12 uncontested), the only area where one clearly leads the other is Bowes on metres gained (285 to 235)

So if the answer is nothing - then their starting trade value is the same.

I think if anyone here thinks we are trading out Long for Bowes and 7 and we hang onto 9 isdelusional. The only possibility would be Long and 9 for Bowes and 7. Even then we don’t know that Bowes wants to come to us.

Far more likely is Long for a second round pick
This is very incorrect

Gold Coast need to move on Bowes for cap money

As an insentive they include pick 7 otherwise no one would take Bowes on his current salary which might be 1.4mil over the next two years. Means they can retain their current talent, would already be re negotiating their contracts (king, Anderson etc.)

Pick 7 means nothing to them.

But they want long

So to get long the saints would trade Long to GC for pick 7 and Bowes.
Or saints say no and he walks to North for nothing.

Gold Coast win gives them long and cap space (losing Bowes and not having to pay another listed player)

Saints are big winners but about time something went our way.

This is not at all delusional. GC literally do not need draft picks. Pick 9 returning would be a burden for them.

Apparently Luke Dunstan is a jet.

Yeah I know - people are choofing seroiously large cones if they reckon we should get Pick 11 for a hbf who has been in the system for 5 years, doesn't dominate in that position let alone show he could actually transition to the midfield.

All they are hanging onto is that

You would need to move hill to make Bowes work.

No chance we can add 1.5m+ of salary in 2 players and Keep Hill + add the other 4-5 players we need to make the list numbers.

Just out of curiosity without knowing the finer details of the salary cap, would the retiring this offseason have cleared up a fair bit of coin?

Hanners 600k?
Ryder 400-500?
Geary 250-300?
Kent 200k?

that's close to 1.5 there

the draft picks would be on fairly minimal coin each for the first few years. could extend Bowes or back-end De Goey to spread it out to make it work?

It was brought up before Paddy was getting the minimum believe it or not - around 250k , Geary as well , however Kent was getting more than both of them due to when he signed on.

I would say over a million , but we also cut the contracts on several players like Ross and Billings so the 1.5 or more would be about right.

We have the coin to bring in 2 highly paid players , DeGoey must be close to pulling the pin at the Pies so there is part of the money gone and will they use the rest on Bowes to secure pick 7 , I think they will.

I think Hunter has more trade value than Bowes but your point is fair Clark's value is at best something in the late teens and then only that because he is contracted. But I also suspect we are floating him with the intention that we will only follow through if the deal lands us overs.

The only caveat to that is if we land JDG and Bowes the Cap must surely be in trouble if we don't shed Hill and/or Clark. So they may be prepared to take a hit on Hill or Clark or both if it ultimately gets us what we want. The current team have typically taken a view that the sum of all the trades is more important than winning each one individually. Anyway the rumour mill will go into overdrive once the game is done today which should add plenty of pages to this thread to keep us entertained

Pick 20 and 40 is pick 11? I didn't know that. We should see if we can swap our first round picks out every year if it's the same. Clark was pick 7. I obviously have different standards.

Yeah it's interesting - this is pick 11 compared with pick 20+40 each year:

2021: Wanganeen-Milera OR Lohmann + Corey Warner ?
2020: Luke Pedlar OR Max Holmes + Samson Ryan 20+40
2019: Sam Flanders OR Sam Philp + Jay Rantall ?
2018: Caldwell OR Collier-Dawkins + Tom Joyce 11
2017: Bonar or Coleman-Jones + Andrew McPherson ?
2016: Florent OR Cumming + Tom Stewart 20+40
2015: Wayne Milera OR Fiorini + Brandon White ?
2014: Duggan OR Laverde + Neal-Bullen 20+40
2013: Sheed OR Jack Leslie + Kennedy-Harris 11
2012: Menzel OR Broomhead + no-one ?
2011: Toby Greene OR Crozier + Tom Curran 11
2010: Tom Lynch OR Jayden Pitt + Luke Parker ?
2009: Gysberts OR Fyfe + Christensen 20+40
2008: Sidebottom OR Tom Swift + Mitch Robinson 11
2007: Veszpremi OR Tony Notte + Chris Mayne 20+40
2006: Everitt OR Tom Hislop + Josh P Kennedy (father-son) -
2005: Higgins OR Paul Bower + Travis Casserly 11
2004: Adam Thomson OR Dean Polo + Ivan Maric 20+40
2003: Beau Waters OR Sam Butler + Eddie Sansbury 11
2002: Winderlich OR Will Minson + Jobe Watson (father-son) -
2001: Richard Cole OR Daniel Elstone + Gary Ablett Jr (father-son) -
2000: Trent Sporn OR Kane Cornes + Chris Hyde 20+40

Rough count there is:

  • Pick 11 wins 6 times
  • Picks 20+40 win 7 times
  • Too close to call 6 times
  • Can't call because one pick was father-son 3 times

Seems pretty even so maybe that means the balance is about right?

This.
It’s a big salary we’re taking on. We’re not a charity.

11 is just out of the range of the more likely stars but too early to go speculative I guess would be the skewing. The stars are definitely coming at 11 though apart from FS players.

Unless you’re a sprinter and like to smash back a beer then all you get buying pints in Australia is half a pint of warm beer. A lot of our beers have been made to drink ice cold, go with a small glass and enjoy your beer.
If the beer takes nice it is usually gone before it's even close to not cold any more...in my experience anyway.

Don’t really see Stanley as a “can’t believe we traded him” kinda guy. He’s been fine but nothing we should really regret.
