Roll through the teams

WCE - pick 1. Without pick 2, there is no possible path to trade with them with what they would want
North -pick 2. Unless it involved pick 1, they are not trading that pick
North - pick 3. MAYBE they might trade this but the cost?...
Hawthorn - pick 4. They simply are not trading that pick
Bulldogs - pick 5. They sold the farm pickwise to get that pick, they are NOT trading it
Melbourne - pick 6. Considering they have been trying to move UP the draft board, they are not trading it down.
GWS - pick 7. MAYBE this is the pick we should be targeting if we are really after a player but what it would cost???
Geelong - pick 8. Said they are open to trading it. Could 10 & 14 get 7 and maybe 25 or a future pick????
Essendon - pick 9. No point trading for this pick unless on the night the player we want is still there and Essendon are open to trading as the guy they wanted is off the board?
Pick #3 + F2 for F1 + 10 + 14

Take Watson.

Rankine and Watson as the small forwards for the next premiership push. Both are super-talented rare beasts that can flick into the middle for X-factor.

Rachele should transition to a mid with Pedlar across the next couple of seasons.

Welsh next year along with another Michalanney as father-sons.

Id be very open to trading with Geelong with 10 & 14 for 8 & 25. We are in need of that ideal player. Geelong need more 1st rounders to pick talent as they are thin on the ground with young talent..that sort of trade on paper should work really well
agree Cats would very likely do it and we would only do it perhaps on the night IF the player we want is there at 8th available (say Curtin or O'Sullivan) and we are confident they will NOT be there at 10. Take Moir with 25 and best other mid at 20th available pick.

Under this scenario where points are heavily in Cats favour perhaps we can even get a F2 IN for our F3 (not sure we want to be swapping same round draft picks as we are both equal odds, 15-1, to win the flag next year and there is potentially more downside risk for us IF we were to lose a Dawson, Tex etc (I suppose Jezza and Stewart are similarly important but anyway..). That said, Cats will probably say bugger off based on their new hardman Mackie in control

do we really want Watson after already getting Rankine, Rachele and Pedlar. Surely we just go elite mid this time? Clearly I just dont get it with him but it certainly isnt a need and a 170cm player scares me at the next level with taller, faster and stronger opponents not so easily tricked

Maybe so..but at 8, lets see who may be there (excluding academy kids and picks) if we are looking at the most likely players from looking at the draft boards.

1. Reid (WCE)
2. Curtin (NORTH)
3. McKercher (NORTH)
4. Duursma (HAWKS)
5. Watson (Dogs)
6. O'Sullivan / Sanders / Caddy (Demons)
7. Sanders / Caddy / O'Sullivan (GWS)
8. Caddy / O'Sullivan / Sanders / Wilson / Windsor (outsider for top 10 pick)

Realistically at 8 - one of Sanders, O'Sullivan Wilson or Caddy would be there

Then

9. Wilson / Windsor
10 Wilson / Windsor

But staying at 10 will get one of those 2 AND a Tholstrup or DeMattia as well - Geelong won't get that if they stay at 8..so are 2 players - say Windsor and DeMattia better than 1 of Sanders / O'Sullivan / Caddy???

He just looks elite to me.

I'm fairly certain Melbourne wouldn't be interested in taking Sanders - I feel like they'll lean towards O'Sullivan over Caddy personally.

North have already traded out next year’s first round concessions - haven’t they?

Despite the fact that the AFL said they’d review whether to give them those picks if their form improved significantly over the course of next year.

I guess they’re not doing that now
I think "despite" is the wrong choice of word.

Not really at the top end when it comes to midfielders, Finn O'Sullivan, Sam Lalor, Sid Draper, Josh Smillie, Jagga Smith, Phoenix Hargrave, Archer Day-Wicks, Kade Herbert, Christian Moreas (Hawks NGA), Zak Johnson, Pat Retschko, Xavier Lindsay, Xavier Ivisic all in the open draft (Moreas pick 40).

Levi Ashcroft F/S and Leonardo Lombardi Suns Academy, Camporeale twins F/S, Joe Harrison Syd Academy and Sam Marshall Lions Academy and some others but currently not talked about as 1st round chances
FMD this is a commentator super draft if nothing else, with 'Moves like Jagga' 'Archer shoots....and scores', 'Phoenix rising from the ashes' etc all available.

Clarkson was at the WAFL U18's Grand Final in person to watch the Claremont Tigers vs the Perth Demons so that is likely a fair indication they have big interest in Claremont's Captain Daniel Curtin if they can't get up the order to grab Harley Reid.
With their recent list building, they would be insane to NOT take him with either 2 or 3. They are so short of quality talls.

A mid-sized Tasmanian utility is emerging as a potential top-10 bolter for next month’s national draft after impressing in a range of positions across the second half of the season.
James Leake is believed to be firmly in the sights of clubs including Melbourne (pick 6), Greater Western Sydney (pick 7) and Geelong (pick 8).

Rivals believe that St Kilda (pick 13) also likes Leake, but growing interest means he is unlikely to slip to that selection.

Good way of showing the options.

I listened to the Sensible Crow Podcast for the first time the other day and was genuinely impressed on all levels:

  • the hosts knowledge, pacing, guest interaction and overall delivery which isnt always easy (I used to host an hour radio show per week on local radio a few years ago and its not hard to bugger things up)
  • but also the guest specializing in draftees focussing on Crows needs and likely candidates around our range
  • then having JR speak for a decent time and being as open as he possibly can be (which clearly is limited)

Why in the hell would anyone criticise this Podcast and poster? Gets better access to the club that almost anyone else here and its produced well with lots of work going into it for our benefit. Well done Feenix
Sorry what do you mean? It's my favourite crows podcast. Did that comment come across as sarcasm?

I’m as big a Wilson fan as you’ll find on this site (I have him as top 5), but I’d be very happy with O’Sullivan, as well

Only thing is, how does he fit if/when Petty comes over? I guess we move Petty forward once Tex retires
Or we don't target Petty next offseason, and wait and see whether we need to target him end of 2025.

Spine: Murray, Osullivan, Dawson, Thilthorpe, Fogarty

I hope we aren’t spending a lot of trade capital on the hope Petty will be a gun forward, when he’s had limited exposure and it’s down back where he was really solid.

After Tex we’ve got Fog, RT, Welsh and Gollant, it’s not an area I’d be pumping a lot of resource into unless it’s a proven gun forward.

That’s not Feenix is it?

If we drafted O’Sullivan, I’d suspect we’d wait on Petty until 2025, and look to fill other areas of potential need next off-season (your Hayward/Cumming type signings)

Then wait and see if Petty is needed, either down back (if O’Sullivan looked like busting, god forbid) or up forward (if we need an immediate Tex replacement and Petty has had a couple of good years there)
