I think too much is made of 16’s. Still very young boys with 2 years to go. Haven’t had a proper look but I’d bet someone else’s money that quite a number of 16’s don’t kick on to AFL.

Of course a few do but mostly not I think.

My theory...

With smaller states it is easier to identify the best talent earlier. 90% of our population lives in Adelaide. The players are right under our noses.

At U15 and U16 level our Talent ID may be ahead of other states. Our SANFL clubs have talent squads for U13 or even earlier.

The larger states take longer to identify their standout talents. Bigger states, more competitions, more players to sift through, bigger regional hubs rather than everything being run in the big smoke, players stay in their local competitions longer before identification occurs. It takes longer.

I also think in smaller states the "obvious guns" are anointed early and coast whereas in larger states players have to keep proving themselves over and over again.
The last point is definitely a thing !

We overhype ours , but when they hit national stage at U18s alot of other states have gone past them - bigger , fitter , more mature mentally , hungrier etc etc

100% and its pretty damn disappointing that such talent is not being nourished appropriately. Something really stinks atm because SA at Under 15 & Under 16 level are really strong but something keeps happening between there and Under 18 level compared to other states. The good talent is not developing properly, only the best of the best (JHF) seem to really kick on. Noted it especially in the last couple of years. Time for a restructure or something at the very least.
i'd like to see how much money is being pumped into each area.

Only 1 SA lad in the top 20 after the Nationals though it must be taken into account the Academy players play in pool B and don't play the VM VC SA or WA.

Another good draft haul for the Northern teams by the looks. 11 out of the list of 20 are tied to the teams with academies.

How do McKercher and Sanders measure up against Chayce Jones as an Under 18?

If so what player do you think will be the target of this upgrade and what team do you think is the most likely to facilitate the trade with us?

Looking at what mids are available outside of Tassie lads McKercher and Sanders at the top end looking at using our first on a proven mid would seem to make more sense if one can be shaken free even if under contract.

I would say Freo would be a possibility to move up the draft if we were to go down that direction.

In relation to getting players from other teams I’d love for us to try for someone LDU or Callaghan. I highly doubt that they’d come though.

Chayce was pretty bloody good in his draft year at the Nationals and the Nationals that year were made up of some exceptional footballers. Right through to Zac Butters at pick 14. We tend to forget how good players were in their draft year over time.

About the only 3 in the 2018 1st round who haven't played some decent AFL footy and played a decent number of AFL games are Jackson Hately, Ely Smith and Riley Collier-Dawkins.

Would be interesting to see where McKercher and Sanders would go if they were in the 2018 draft.

He was but the eyeball test of these guys versus the eyeball test back then has them a step above, especially McKercher. 2018 will always be second to 2001 for mine in one of the great drafts. I'd be taking McKercher anywhere after 6 in that draft and Sanders 10 onwards. Butters is the one I wanted so badly at 9 when he was there. I think my desk still has a dent when he remained after our pick.

Elite Mckercher
A+ Sanders
A- Jones

Sanders and Mckercher both averaged whopping possession counts in nationals , the 2 best clearly in the carnival

Chayce best possession count in nationals by memory was 25 against vic country

Sanders average was 35+
Mckercher average 33+

They’d be top 10 biggest ever averages and sanders would be close to record re possessions

But it wasn’t just that - Mckercher runs and Carries ball with ease slicing through and then a beautiful kick . Also averaged 2 goals a game and Sanders averaged a goal a game

I can actually imagine Mckercher going pick 1 and being a great player on the wide expanses on Optus oval

Eyeball and also raw data shows them a step above

Chayce at pick 9-14 was about right on nationals form and Mckercher 1-4 and Sanders 5-9 seems about right too

Wouldn't a larger state also have a proportionately larger talent id staff across the state? So you could argue that identification shouldn't take any longer.

No, because they don't have a structure underneath to identify the most talented players in the state at those ages, whereas each of our SANFL clubs have talent squads (both country and metro) from U13s up

Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide: Top draft prospects' July ranking

Reading through Twoomey's latest draft rankings. If we do end up with a pick around 5-8 we will hopefully have access to either Duursma or Sanders. Both sound like great options for what we need in our midfield.

McKercher also sounds perfect but likely gone before our pick.

So am I right in thinking this is an awful draft year for SA talent?
Looks like SA is barely represented in the top 20 form guide posted today.

In my opinion this is a strange top 20 draft profile by Cam in general. A 170cm small forward ranked #3, 3 ruckman, 7 Allies players, KP Swingmen all over, more Mid/Fwds then pure midfielders.

Might be a sign of positionless football becoming more prominent and sought after by recruiters. And perhaps the U18 coaches for SA have been a little too rigid in how they line their boys up.

If it is the case it bodes well for Welsh next year.
