Game Day 2023 AFL DRAFT

So I’ve been told by someone who spoke to the Curtin family on draft night that the AFC showed very little interest in Daniel up until 24 hours out. The Curtin’s wanted to stay in WA, but had warmed to the idea of going to Vic. Adelaide was basically a complete shock and they were barely prepared for it. Hence the lack of enthusiasm on draft night.

To be fair on the AFC, they didn’t think he was ever an option until late, so we can’t blame them for not ‘courting’ him.

Up to the club now to make him and his family comfortable. Which I’m backing the club in to do. Not the best start though.
How do you explain that it has been widely reported that the Crows met with Curtin back in March when they had their preseason games?

I said the AFC had shown very little interest. That doesn’t mean we hadn’t ever met him prior to the draft.

Sounds like we met him in March and then gave him very little after that.

How many times did AFC meet with Curtin v other players...

How many hours did our recruiting team spend watching Curtin v other players.

For showing very little interest we were very, very keen to trade up to grab him...

Never under estimate the want to control the narrative to play down a successful recruitment coop.

Firstly, The narrative Daniel is a flight risk by those desperate to play down the draft night success. He didn't slide because of a flight risk. Thats ridiculous and lazy, not to mention I bet that only popped up in the reviews when ever Adelaide was reported to be into him. Its always dont bother he is a flight risk.

Secondly, we clearly met with them. I don't get this actually. They were enthusiastic. You could see it. Curtin was linked to the Crows well before draft day. The talk of us not meeting them and we shocked everyone is kind of dumb. Curtin and his family knew it was a possibility. The only reason they wouldn't have known 100% is because the Crows couldn't predict if he would have been drafted by GWS or if GWS get a better offer.

Even if Curtin and his family were falling over themselves with glee, if he said he was a Crows fan growing up and dreamed of this moment, we'd still get comments of he never wanted to come, he is a flight risk. lol.

Well, it sounds like we showed less interest than other clubs. Which makes sense given the reaction from the Curtins and the fact Hamish has said the opportunity to get him came very late in the piece.

We watching a different telecast or you are really over reacting?

Geez, don’t shoot the messenger guys. Just accept there’s a possibility the Curtins had other preferences and we may not have shown much interest until late. Nothing amazing/crazy about that.

And I don’t really care either way. I’m just happy we have him. For three years at least.

There's more of a probability you are just making shit up!

Its not rocket science to want your kid to stay in the same state. Not shooting the messenger at all. But hearsay isnt accepted in courts for a reason. A lot of things can be taken out of context through hearsay. For example, the curtins no doubt were swamped with calls from friends and family, not to mention meeting the crows delegation to go through the next steps and requirements. I highly doubt they had a lot of time to go into any detail about anything prior to the draft.

So in this case my take would be the Curtins didnt know the deal with GWS was going to happen until 24 hours out which would explain why they could have said they didn't think it would happen and the confusion suggesting the crows didnt show any interest. But the Crows have said they met with him at various times well before the draft.

It wasn't in the Crow's best interests to broadcast we were hoping to trade up to land Curtin.

No doubt we did our due diligence on all the players we had in the radar... but clubs rarely give much away.

Here we go. This board is so f%#d when anyone reports any kind of inside goss. Especially when it doesn’t fit their desired narrative.

All I was told was the Curtin weren’t expecting us. Which makes so much sense given the way the draft was predicted.

Not doubting his preference was to stay in WA but from THE HORSES MOUTH Daniel is thrilled to be coming over to the crows, has lots of extended family here and the reaction on draft night was more a function of surprise as not going to a MLB club. Various posters on this board have seen correspondence that’ unambiguously backs this up.

No more flight risk than any other interstater IMO

Yeah I believe this, but I’m not fazed

Like you say, up to the club to make him feel welcome now, which is really 99.9% of what counts here

As are most Vic lads that attend Private Schools which is a big percentage of the Vic lads that get drafted every year, the most play in the APS system and and some in the AGSV system so I'm afraid you guessed wrong. Even quite a few of the country lads that attend St.Pats, Ballarat Grammar and Ballarat's Clarendon College as boarders play in the Herald Sun Shield Competition.

If you read the end of my write up I said as much. But its not the fact they are forced thats the issue, its the level of competition. The Melbourne College competition is highly regarded. Our top 16/17yo are playing with and against players who wouldn't even make Sanfl under age sides. Where as due to the volume its fair and reasonable to assume a higher proportion of the U18s are playing in the college systems as well. Which makes the competition a lot better.

Jog on ya hero
Show me proof otherwise.

... because imo you have nothing on the inside workings of the club.

You are just back to attention seeking making up BS.

Want Rowies gig...

That's very different to what Hamish said in and in an article I read in the last few days.

I mean, I’m sure all the stuff in that article is 100% true (inc Hamish going to see him live in September), but it’s still possible beside that that we only started to interview him seriously again after we figured he’d be a chance to slide

Mightn’t have been exactly 24 hours, but I can see it being a last minute interview process

I simply regurgitated what I was told by someone who is in the media and spoke to the family. But now you want transcripts? If I wanted attention, I wouldn’t come to an anonymous forum ffs.

Yeah, this was reported initially by the media & club responded by pointing out it was incorrect.

The media also make stuff up, pretending they know about the clubs inner workings when they no little.

AFC did their due diligence on Curtin, along with all potential players.

this person in the media I’ve known for a long time. He has no reason to make shit up. What he said was that the family were shocked. At no point did anyone say the club didn’t do their due diligence. Clearly they were confident he was worth trading up for. But the family were a little blind-sided. That’s it. This is all about from the family’s perspective. Not the clubs.

Gee we have such a victim mentality sometimes. Kid is a Crow let's see if he can play first.

Heard from a source we didn't pay the kid that went 1 much attention leading up to draft either. Mustn't have rated him.

Mate, it's not inside gossip. Widely reported the possibility opened up late, we interviewed him a day out, spoke with fam etc. They knew that if we could trade up, we'd take him. It wasn't a surprise to them.

Never under estimate the power of PR. The club got dragged through the mud over retiring Ben Hart in 2006. Would it be such a surprise if the club fears similar reprisals from its members and media. The culture Nicks has created also plays into this. Last thing we need to be seen as when Nicks wants to pass off the image of we are all friends and a family is being so cutthroat. It was always stated by the club Sloane has the right to go out on his own terms. Ok, but what if a player lacks so much self awareness they are doing themselves a disservice but the club lacks the bigboy pants to have that conversation in public because of a fear of a backlash?

For good reason, Benny was in AA form until he was injured in round 8 and in 2007 carried the roosters to a gf. Like Jason torney was retired too early by the club
