Should be another big win. I'm sure they will go one on one and apply pressure around the ball as they have in the past as it's worked so well against us. First time against GCS I have seen it not work against us, simply because we got on the move and engaged with them less. Let's hope we learn from that, keep the free flowing, momentum and intensity game going.

Think Binns comes in for Cottrell. Perfect in. Just watch them balls this up and pick Curnow though.

Would love Dow in the 22 but I can't pick a player to replace him with. Not with Cuningham coming in last week and Fogarty coming in and playing a role well.
If Binns was to debut this week, you'd think that the club would release a little feel good cryptic announcement early today.
Reckon it'll be George in, Cottrell out at this stage.
Can Doc wing all day?
If George plays, I hope Dow gets a full game and George is the new sub.

It’s very early yet, victory against a undermanned young Hawthorn searching & struggling for a path out of bottom 4 shouldn’t be a difficult task to complete.
Our challenge will come following game, Fremantle at Optus Stadium, that will be a tussle.

We need to really go like for like with selections. We’ve pretty much got the mix right through the middle now imo
It’s imperative we get this right over bringing in Hewitt just because it’s Hewitt.

Could be named on the extended bench and then the announcement made tomorrow morning as we have the Sun game...

If Hewett plays it goes to show we have learnt nothing and have not embraced modern football in the slightest and that the Gold Coast Suns game was just accidental success.

Binns is the best replacement for Cottrell. Curnow would be a better replacement than Hewett.

You could bring Dow in for Cottrell, move Walsh to having more wing time and Docherty more wing time and you would be somewhat on the money there.

Either way, you have a young winger getting 30 possessions per week and playing the way he is, to ignore that and play Hewett or Curnow instead. That just goes to show you as a coach are in the wrong game and may as well pack up your stuff and find another profession.

We needed to tweak the gameplan, to a turnover style, as a pure contested/clearance style isn't sustainable

I feel the transition went too far, too early
I have been going on about this from the early parts of last season. We do, you can't win flags when you can't apply elite pressure.

It's annoyed the hell out of me that we have a good intercepting/rebounding backline that goes to waste because we are terrible at applying pressure. Weitering, Young, McGovern, Marchbank and Kemp are all quality tall intercept marking defenders. Williams, Docherty and Saad are all top level rebounding defenders. Boyd and Cincotta are growing in this area. Newman is not too bad.

Collingwood have been doing it best. They were the first team to embrace the new rules and how that allows teams to attack and defend.

Problem is you need legspeed and desire around the ball and you need midfield rotations. We don't have midfield rotations and we don't have legspeed. We have made list mistakes by bringing in Hewett who was the last type we need and finally the bells are chiming that we don't need him as we already carry Kennedy and Cripps. The coach has been too precious about who he puts into the middle so we don't have rotations. A good coach would have Durdin in there a lot more and would use Fisher despite his deficiencies. Not rotating the mids has been a failing of Voss. Playing too many slow blokes just as bad. I have no doubt we will add Hewett and Curnow to the team that already has Kennedy and Cripps to reform the leagues slowest midfield.

That style of game that you mentioned, that we need to play can only exist if the ball is going forward blindly from the opposition. That only happens when the pressure in the midfield and forward line is really high and that only happens when you have a lot of leg speed and desire as well as fresh legs because the mids have been rotated properly which has not happened.

I'd love to see it as well but team selection, game plan and recruitment has let us down on that front.

The AFL have successfully changes the game with the stand, 666 and kickout rule making it more outside, meaning the way to apply pressure is with fast fresh legs. Credit to the teams who saw this coming and adjusted their recruiting accordingly, those teams make up the top 8. For us however we have been recruiting without a great deal of direction so we're a little behind on that front.

The GCS game we saw a few more midfield rotations than normal. Cuningham and Fogarty went in there and Dow came on as sub so we upped the personnel going into the middle. We dropped regular slow players such as Silvagni, Hewett, Curnow, Young and Motlop and a couple who don't tackle such as Fisher, O'Brien for players who tackle and have leg speed and it brought a lot of pressure to the team, it brought more blokes who get to the ball and break away from the opposition and it brought a big win, our best win of the season.

We just need to keep upping the speed of our team, the tackling and the kicking skills. But speed is the main thing. The aim should be to become the quickest side in the AFL. Keep a couple of elite blokes who are a little slower like Cripps but we should be aiming to go quicker.

As good as Kennedy was I would be very tempted to go with Dow instead and see what happens. Keep Cuningham in as a forward who goes into the middle. Keep rotation Fogarty and when Durdin comes back he steps into his role. Keep Jack Martin in the team. Keep Walsh in the middle. Happy with the defence at the moment, it's got speed and intercepting power. Wings are ok.

On thing that will happen when we consistently apply pressure around the ball is the confidence our defenders will gain and that will mean that we see them begin to play a little loser, run off their men, run from the back of contests and attack more so it does take time. But the Midfielders need to earn the trust of the defenders first before we see the best of what our defence can do.

Sounds like gbat is fed up with the slow, defensive stuff.

I agree, lets take the game on again this week.
Definitely!

1. Need to apply a heap of pressure around the ball.

2. Drop defenders off behind play and intercept more. Keep lose players wide and level of the ball of the ball so we can go quickly after the intercept.

3. Need to move the ball quickly after we cause a turnover. None of this mark and take your time to look around. Weitering is terrible at this, seems to be the last one to get the memo, don't wait for the opposition to run back and setup defensively, got to go while they are unorganised and still in position from their side having the ball.

4. Keep the middle of the ground open, one thing to want to go up the middle, another thing to setup structurally so you can, we did that right for the first time against the suns, hoping it was not by accident.

5. Leg speed. Nothing can be achieved in the modern game without a lot of leg speed. If you cant run away from the oppositions, can't get to the lose ball or the opposition ball carrier super quick, can't defensively run at speed, the game will be gone.

6. Stop selecting blokes who don't tackle and don't have leg speed. We got it right for the first time against the suns. Let's keep it that way.

HEY MATCH COMMITTEE. Please take the following as direction on how to select this week's team:
  1. DO NOT bring in Ed Curnow. Give him a retirement game in round 22 when our season is well and truly cooked. He is done.

  2. DO NOT bring in Hewett, especially for Paddy Dow. He's earned a long stint in the reserves. Way too slow. Kennedy is better and Dow has been good.

  3. DO NOT bring in any small fowards. They don't kick goals, tackle or apply any decent pressure. None of them can take marks. Fogarty stays because he can lay tackles. Martin stays beacuse he can actually take a mark. NO FISHER MOTLOP OR DURDIN PLEASE. Preferrably never again.

  4. DO NOT bring in Silvagni. Let him play the year out in the reserves before he leaves the club.

  5. DO NOT bring in Young. Persist with Kemp. Young gives off too many Plowman vibes.

  6. DO NOT drop Cunningham. Hasn't played for 200 years. Deserves a month so we can decide whether to keep or delist him at year end.

  7. DO NOT replace Cottrell with anyone but Binns. Time to reward VFL form. There's nobody else in the 2's that deserves a chance.

What exactly do you want this bloke to say? He uses a word a few times to try to explain himself and supporters are going full comatose. Write him a script you're happy with or stfu. As long as he isn't using "craft" or "moving forward" who gives a shit?
