Why didn't the Eagles take him in his draft year? Was he not rated by your scouts? We worked to move up in the draft to get him. We obviously rated him quite highly to do so. Is it possible he still sees that as a bit of snub from the Eagles and sees our want to get him as worthy of some loyalty? That would linger in my head if I was him.
Simply put we sold the farm for Tim Kelly and our first pick wasn’t until pick 49. We were coming off a flag and went all in for another one so I didn’t mind the decision then and I still don’t mind it now. It didn’t work out but we had a crack and the logic was sound but now we’re paying for it in that we have almost no talent from the 2019 draft. Would have loved to have had a crack at Jackson, Georgiadis, Chad Warner, Rivers etc, some really good WA talent in that draft.

It's staggering how much of a self-own that trade increasingly reveals itself to be
It’s not so much as Kelly not being the same player he was at Geelong.

It’s much more on the senior West Coast players coasting after their premiership win, then they sulked it up when covid and the GC footy bubble hit. And all their senior players body’s broke down, to the point that they spent more time in rehab than on the footy field for the past three years.

And their actually one fit senior player, who still had some good footy left in him in Redden, retired early.

Those players and the footy staff, killed their own culture.

Now we wait and see if they do a North, because no amount of money will help them at the draft.

Lohmann will have to develop an appetite for defensive pressure and tackling before I'd consider him a replacement for McCarthy. Not saying he can't but it's definitely something he needs to work on.

Was referring more so to his ball use than his pressure and tackling.
Doesn't kick goals, but like McCarthy can make a good pass to a teammate instead.

Haven't seen enough to suggest that Lohmann is a Charlie replacement - as the post I was responding to suggests.

Yeah I only have hope for Kai. He said in an interview he is learning from the amazing experience being around Charlie and the like, so hopefully that means he gets some more footy sense.

Goodo, I thought you still had a first round pick, I didn't remember that you traded away picks for Kelly. My bad.

Would have been a great fit at eagles for mine. Would love to have been a fly on the wall for exit interview with Fagan because up until then I think he was coming home.

Fagan's genius is connecting with players.

I imagine the conversation would have been it's not a binary choice.

Have you thought about another two years here too give a premiership a tilt and to continue to learn from the best.
Then take that development and growth and pass that onto players at another club. You'll be more valuable.

We rated him and obviously still do, fantastic clubman and I think he’ll explode next year if he gets proper midfield minutes and centre bounces. Many on our board aren’t fussed and their reasoning is sound but I’m very disappointed he’s not coming home. Hope we go after Dow, the poor man’s Dev.

Spot on. Fages is a good Tasmanian boy and a hero at my local club. He was an astute appointment by your administration. All the Hawks rubbish was absolute BS. If I was Dev I would have signed a 1 year deal with Lions have a shot at another flag and hopefully show enough to be playing regular midfield with 2 Ashcrofts inbound.

Would still probably be chasing someone like Charlie Comben as a Forward Ruck. Not sure of his contract situation.
If we could sort out his injury issues he could be a weapon.
We have chased him before.
Maybe two years ago, when we actually did. But we have forward/rucks coming through our academy and we have Smith developing nicely. How many do we need before we impact the balance of the list?

Agree. It is kinda jarring though to see Tim’s name in the top 20 highest paid players on like $1m+ a year.

We've talked a lot about rayner playing the mid field crash and bash. I personally prefer dev in there, leaving rayner to be a creative bull forward.

Ps I know he didn't dominate in the gf, but cam was awesome in the other finals. Will be better next time around.

Our list management is more savvy than that. This year Dev was OOC, Eagles had the PS card to play and we get eff all in trade value. Two years gives us leverage in trading should Dev decide next year to seek greener pastures if he does not secure regular 23 spot. Back in your court now if you are still chasing him next year.

Or they could just plan to be crap in two years time too?

Can just see fagan using this explanation, really pulls at the heartstrings. 🤣

If we know one thing about fagan it's that's he's a genuine relationship builder, and genuine relationships put the players before club plotting and politics.

I'm sure assurances will have been given that if dev still wants out next year the club will totally support that move.

Yes that fits a political move, but with fagan that will have been a genuine sentiment.

I'm hoping for Melbourne's sake that they are picking up Fullarton as a possible forward, rather than a ruckman and that was just Callum Towmey's error.

Aww man. 81 games more and we could have gotten father/son access.

I’ve always said those with a basketball background should be father son eligible after 19 games

They need someone to play alongside Schache in the VFL to clog up any pathway for actual developing talls.
