I'm a big yes on Tom Doedee, we have Froggy to take care of most of 2024 and it will probably take Doedee till 2025 to get back to his best.

Froggy may retire at the end of next season as well.
Was reading Pies have an interest in Doedee as well. Looking at him as a long term replacement for Howe.

Andrews and Payne are locks as our 2 tall defenders. Then looking at it we have Lester for 1 more year, Gardiner for 2 and Joyce for 1 more. Lester I can see retiring next year, he'll retire with Zorks I reckon. Lester may hold his spot next season but will face strong competition preseason from Gardiner if Darcy keeps his body fit and has a big one. Joyce has work to do, needs to be more disciplined and eliminate the free kicks he gives away. I like the way he worked with Andrews and Payne early in the season, showed a potential to hold that spot, but he's probably seen as more depth for injury to Andrews or Payne with improvement.

I think Doedee certainly fills a need past next season, I do think we'd be stronger with him. Get him healed and fit, we're good at that, and he's a strong addition to the club.

I certainly wouldn't mind us drafting a tall defender as well. Get a good young lad in the system now. In a year or so, if Joyce doesn't come on, if Darcy's body gives in, we at least have a kid developing.

We could rookie the 2 academy prospects in McDonald and Richardson this year.
Both KPPs but didn't set the world on fire this year. Will be cheap.

I’m sure the recruiting team will be creative again this year. They did a fantastic job last year to climb the draft ladder.

Here’s a wishful thought. Target Connor O’Sullivan in the draft. Presently expected to go around No. 10 in the draft. Quite a challenge, but not unrealistic to trade up. Listed as 198cm and 92kg. Highlight reel looks solid. Moves well, reads the play well, good disposals and decision making. OK, you don’t get the best out of a big 18 year old for a couple of years, but I’m sure they can bring in Coffield, Doedee, or another free agent type within the budget.

With the possibility of Lohmann going back to a Vic. team, Robertson, and maybe Prior going to W.A., as well as Fullerton being on the radar of a few teams, I’m sure there is some currency there. I‘m being ruthless, but maybe Gardiner is a trade option for a developing list, is Brisbane can be appropriately compensated.

Throw in Chol, and a surprise mid, both cheaply, then some needed list gaps could be addresses. The recruiters always have a surprise or two up their sleeve at this time of the year.

My Crows-supporting friend thinks, for what it's worth, that Doedee is in their top five most important players quite comfortably. He's absolutely gutted about the idea of losing him.

Agree with your mate... Doedee in form would be a massive in for us, very good player, AA level at his best IMO.

Hard to assess where Dizzy is at in terms of his ability to play at the level given his injuries, but I suspect he wouldn't entice much interest. His body is pretty broken.

So why aren't the Crows pushing harder to keep him?

I think the story might be a little cloudier than that. Sounds like the desire to depart came from him first, rather than the club snubbing him at all.

Doedee said he didn't want to leave, the club only offered him 2 years, that's why he's seeking a longer term contract elsewhere.

He knows after two major knee surgeries that he needs guaranteed money at a good value before his contract offers plummet in value.

Therefore it would be more about years than $$$. Obviously over the length of time he would want more $$$ to be more than the 2 that the crows were offering.

I have been very impressed with their young defenders in the backend of the season guys like James Borlase, Mark Keane and Josh Worrell, along with Michalanney (who played all year) have shown a bit to my eye. I'm thinking that they are well catered for at that end of the ground. Also have established players to return like Nick Murray and Butts, also Brodie Smith and ex lion Hinge.

From what I’ve read in the media, Crows had a long term contract in front of Doedee, he was trying to squeeze some more money out them, hence holding off on signing the contract, then did his ACL, the Crows pulled the contract on offer, putting forward a new shorter contract.

Been solid in the vfl for at least 4 weeks. Had one really good game. If needed, he will play his heart out in whatever role he’s given. Don’t think he will be much below the level of Payne carrying an injury.

Sort of like Kennedy in 2001.

lets not forget Dizzy has played well over 150 AFL games, and will do a role. I would prefer, even a slightly impeded Payne, but Dizzy will be very motivated and expect him to perform a role. I seriously doubt we lose the game because of Dizzy. I am pretty confident we win this.

I've been watching him play as a top-up with the seconds for several years now, and while being appreciative of his talents, thought that this was about his level. The last few games of the VFL season have changed my mind and I now have a real hankerin' for Bruce Reville.
