6. George

Looks like he is going to become a complete midfielder over time: breakaway speed, hardness & two way running. Will hopefully have the benefit of Cunners this year to teach & protect him. Will need to improve his forward craft as he is likely to be asked to rotate thru HF when not on the ball. Let’s get him to the 50 game as quickly as possible.

7. Ziebs

Is he still best 22? After the success of the move down back in 2021 it was surprising to see him return to the forward half in 22. Outside of the Swans game he had little impact but the haphazard & infrequent entires didn’t Help. Provides leadership and attack on the ball but with the number of medium forwards on the list he needs to provide more to be guaranteed selection.

With all due respect to yourself and Ziebs, it wasn't surprising to see him moved back forward. He provides absolutely nothing by way of defensive ability. Zilch. He could zone off and intercept. That's about it. Playing with him down there was essentially a handicap, especially given he didn't even possess the penetration of Hall

You'll be very surprised to learn he's training with the backs this pre season

8. Bailey S

Finishing 3rd in the B&F in his 4th season is a fair effort. Has played high HF, wing & HBF but wing seems his best possie. Has a big tank & good leg speed and another big pre-season should see him really cement his position. His run from behind was important last year to provide some rebound & as he gets more confident this will happen more often. Given he was pick 49 in the draft he has been a good get.

Had a really good year in a dysfunctional system. Good smart player, one to watch. Needs to get bigger and stronger, like most of them, but that will happen.

To some extent, it was a panic move after the round 1 fiasco when we lost Ben McKay early in the game and then Hawthorn managed to isolate Ziebell on either Lewis or Gunston. He was never meant to play on a tall forward. He got exposed in that game but we persisted with him in defence and he played okay against West Coast a week later. Then came the Brisbane disaster when the backline was overrun by a torrent of inside 50s. Their small forwards ran riot and it looked for all money as though Ziebell could not play on talls or smalls in defence. He was moved forward the following week and kicked a bag against Sydney. The thing is though, nobody was complaining as much about his productivity in defence in 2021. It was only two really tough games for him at the start of 2022. Maybe that was enough to say he can't play defence but there were mitigating circumstances in both of these games.

I thought he truly made a return against Sydney. It almost seemed like the old JZ was back. He had the kicking accuracy, marking, leading, goal assists and looked very dangerous against what was proven to be a very good team later in the year.

Maybe with more competent (the hardest-bastards of coaching panels) coaching, we can extract every bit of his ability. He can still do the good stuff, the hard part is trying to manage the bad. I see JZ making it still as a forward because he is a very good lead-up forward. The only gripe I have is he needs to keep his feet in crucial contests unless the ball is a loose one where he is certain that contested possession will reach it's target. Too often (I am being really harsh here as well) his opponent gets free because his possession doesn't hit the target and he goes to ground leaving his opponent wide open for the receive.

The negatives I can cope with as long as he has an impact. If that doesn't happen I'm not sure where he fits. A 2013 JZ would be pretty handy right now.

Makes me come across as someone who wants butter on both sides, but I was actually critiquing his output in 2021. He got stacks of the ball, but still couldn't defend, and really didn't do much with the ball when he did get it. Pundits were singing his praises and I was rubbing my eyes trying to get them to see the same thing as those pundits. Unsuccessfully. He isn't a defender. I'll cut him some slack with the McKay injury but man, it's a pretty sad indictment of our list when he's the next in line

Each team has a captain

9. LDU

Finally emerged as a high quality midfielder, just short of the elite level. If he can add a few goals, both when on the ball and when rotating thru the forward line, he will join that group. Should be even better in 23 with a hopefully fully fit Cunners getting first hands at stoppages and releasing him. His explosiveness out of stoppages sets up so many scoring opportunities

10. Cunners

Probably our most important, if not best, player. One of the best clearance, first touch players in the game and has great hands. His ability to take the tackle and still distribute by hand is elite. His ability to do the grunt work in the middle also protects our young mids and helps them develop their own games under lesser physical pressure. Also a threat in the air up forward when he rotates thru there. Let’s hope he is back to full match fitness this year.

11. LMac

He’s been tried up the ground a few times but I reckon HB is his go. He is quick enough to play on smalls and has good enough defensive positioning to play on all but the gorillas will providing some serious interceptions. Has a long leg but sometimes bites off more than he can chew. Seems to bleed blue and white and is now an established leader. At 27 & 150 games should be entering his prime.

12. Jy

Is the accumulating yin to LDU’s explosive yang. Has been a fine leader by example over the past two seasons. The return of Cunners and the need to get midfield minutes into Will, Tom, George et al means he may spend more time as an outside mid and up forward. Despite starting his career as a HF he doesn’t kick a lot of goals so this will be a new challenge for him.

It is easy to see why we recruited him: can play HB, HF & inside & outside mid. At 25 he is coming into his prime. A good ball user & runs both ways. I reckon we may use him on a wing. His experience will be important especially as the season gets longer & the younger bodies tire. Not a world beater but a 5 year investment given where are now at.

14. Liam S

A side in our position doesn’t recruit a 31 year old just for his playing ability. It is also about his professionalism, preparation, leadership & mentoring. He knows Clarke’s game plan & coaching peccadilloes & can be used in in a teaching role both on & off field. Is likely to be played as a HF & run thru the midfield. Won’t be a star but may play an important role in fast tracking our development.

15. Daniel Howe

194cm midfielders don’t grow on trees. His ability to play in multiple positions & multiple roles is important. Not a world beater but knows the Clarko game plan & coaching style. I suspect he will be a Mr fix it & deployed within games to fix holes either in midfield or down back. He is capable of a tagging role and we don’t have many taggers on the list. A solid meat & potatoes type who will buy time for the development of our young list.

Who is everyone’s pick to play the main distributor off HB role this year?

Question marks over Hall. (can he stay injury free? Are there more dependable kicks / decision makers available?)

TT too. (still not confirmed he’s gonna be switched down back? Will he defy his critics and become a solid week-in week-out contributor?)

Or is there anyone else we reckon could play the role well?

my guess would have been the Goat, but people who have been down to Arden St this preseason say he's training with the mids

as much as i don't like it, we're probably stuck with Hall for at least another half-season until someone else comes through, we run with a positional swap, or we trade for someone next year.

although my preference would be to rely on a few guys and not be so one dimensional. we were really predictable with our ball movement when Hall was in the team
