So its actually Libba we have to thank yes?

Lethlean overruled him on King and he was probably stuffed when we he picked Allison. I think that Toce so far looks like he's actually AFL standard. Most clubs don't blow drafts year after year. Getting a good supply of young talent in is a baseline not a rarity at most clubs. I don't trust any of them but so far Toce and Bassat are doing well.

Toce was a talent scout for us and probably picked players that excelled at other clubs that Libba overruled if he managed to replace him I would guess.

Which one? Bergman looks good and Sinn is just injury prone. Sinn is risky but has talent and with our medical staff having a less than stellar record getting them back on the park it would be a massive dice roll. Bergman if anything will cost too much and rather take a pick at the draft if they want a first rounder.
They're both probably going to be too expensive, and in reality they're depth players. I don't think our starting 22 has any obvious holes. A player with a big tank that is going to come cheap is probably the best option, otherwise the best course of action is to go to the draft.

I don’t think DeKoning is high risk but would definitely be very costly.

He’ll be a very good player.

I’m more than happy to invest in our current talls & maybe look for an upgrade on Campbell while Keeler & Heath develop.

The draft & free agents is my preference.

Even Ben McKay would cost a huge wage even if he's a FA. If we lose Gresham to FA he'd be a straight swap. I'd rather Gresham and Van Es or Adams personally. He's only ever managed one full season even though he is a gun.

I was just trying to get to the bottom of what StCicatriz was on about.

I don't much have an opinion about it anymore. The whole thing is too opaque and it takes 5-10 years to make a judgment.
IMHO the last 2 years we have simply taken the obvious draftees, but maybe not outsmarting yourself is a skill in recruiting.

Why would you want someone that everyone thought was good, but no-one thinks is good anymore?
Plenty of people rate Bergman and Sinn is just coming back from injury

If you could get either for a 2nd round you’d be mad not to

Doubt they let Sinn go though, even with the injury issues

Christian Petraccca would be playing for us if that was true so maybe something in that. You say it was obvious but there are always decisions to make. List management will be important from now on in with specific types needed for holes in the list.

McKay is another who can hardly get on the field, I dont know when he last played an entire season? Is he a great need (possibly), but he would need to play out the remainder of the season before he should be considered. Van Es and Adams are only a season or two away from being ready, plus we now have Cordy and even Jack Hayes has played key defence at times. I cant see the point paying big $$$ for a player who cant garauntee to play most games, we have had plenty of them in the past couple of decades.

Elite midfielders and true ruckman are our immediate area of need, Parish is FA, but ruckman dont slip through to free agency very often.

Gresham is also injury prone, but if he can play out the season he should offered a lessor contract than his current one and target another player to spend the dollars on.

l don't see much if any genuine holes in our list right now. Of course you can always upgrade, but like you l think a small forward is missing but not much else.

The question over the direction we take this year was already answered, it will be drafting. We also have the luxury at the moment of not having any genuine spuds or geriatric on the list so we can burn some capital to hopefully move up the draft order.

When we are a trusted contender then the good players might want to come but till then it's draft quality and chase the bayside players.

That ruck forward role probably could be added to. Even a back up semi developed ruck. You're right though. Top end talent is always something that you can never have enough of so upgrading is probably the right idea.

I think Gags did a decent job, it was coaching that let us down, the vanilla game style we had absolutely sucked the life out of the list for the past two years, made players look worse than what they are.

the works gags did isnt the reason why we are in a good spot now. the core of it came from the head recruiter who didnt have much of anything to do anything or he's predecessors.
The OP was right, don't see what Toce has to do with anything..

Said it before, will say it again. Amartey would be an ideal fit, but we'll have to pay up given his recent form. Otherwise, Keeler could fill the hole.

Looks athletic AF, and got a healthy dose of mongrel in him too. Laughing in the face of grown men trying to spark him up after he tossed them around like rag dolls was chefs kiss.

It’s not entirely up-to-date (see NAS), but have at it gang…

I’d be circling Finn Maginness like motherf#*ing Jaws.

Other names to think about:
  • Max Ramsden
  • Xavier O’Halloran
  • Sam Flanders
  • Lachie Ash
  • Nick Bryan
  • Harry Himmelberg
  • Ben Hobbs
  • Arlo Draper
  • Tom Fullarton
  • Brodie Kemp
  • Mitch Georgiades
  • Deven Robertson
  • Sam Philp
  • Darcy Parish
  • Liam Henry
  • Laitham Vandermeer
  • Shannon Neale
  • Ned Long
  • Ben McKay
  • Miles Bergman
  • Joel Amartey
  • Rhyan Mansell
  • Hugo Hall-Kahan
  • Jack Petruccelle

They range from probable spuds, to 98% ungettable, but it never hurts to explore the options…

What does Finn bring, who does he replace etc? I know nothing about him.

Big-bodied midfielder. Sandy boy. Like Josh Kennedy insofar as he’s a legacy Hawk and a big fella who isn’t superb by foot, but is strong in the contest and can run all day.

Eventual replacement for someone like Ross IMO, but would need to improve a fair bit to match Seb’s output.

I also very much like the idea of taking something shiny from away from Hawthorn.
