Exactly what I was thinking.
A game plan that relies heavily on defence trading away one of the few KPDs in the competition?
Makes no sense at all.
given we have put Howard in for surgery I don't believe he is on the table.......

We must have someone cheap lined up or else it makes no sense.

Last week wasn’t the first time Cordy has been exposed. There was a reason why he wasn’t able to hold a spot in a bulldogs side desperate for key defenders
Cordy was made to look ordinary thanks to the lack of pressure up the ground. It would not have mattered one iota if we had Doug there instead.

And to be fair, the Dogs offered him a deal but at that stage they had Keath and a million other talls in front of him (who would have thought that Bevo would be so pig headed to keep Naughton in the forward line instead of swinging him back).

I'm more than happy for the club to bring in someone like Tomlinson while Van Es develops his game.

If we can add more talent to the midfield, whoever is combined with Wilks & Battle will be under less pressure anyway.

Any player who needs a clean up has to be put in at the end of the season... if you waited until trade week they'd have much less value as they'd have their preseason put back weeks.

It's only a finger that Doug is having sorted out anyway.

IDK , if they need surgery due to injury sustained at the Saints, wouldn't they get it anyway?

Imagine if it was a player that was going to be delisted....thanks for your time at the Saints son, hope your leg grows back soon, good luck with the public health system.

Not sure the majority of supporters will cop going backwards after they've tasted finals again, it would need to be a very good sell.
If they are that short sighted they probably need to do some research.

We are one of the youngest average aged sides selected this year and we were the youngest side to play finals based on this.

We were a bottom half of the 8 side - which would mean we are very susceptible to dropping out. It doesn’t guarantee we will. But we would be odds on.

This is our current ceiling. By the time Owens phillipou NWM king etc are in their prime. Most this list will be gone or in the twilight.

To get better. To contend we need more top end talent.

Our stated aim is going to the draft and we are not buying McKay and currently linked to absolute money ball type of incomings - with the exception being we could buy good players in high salary if the opportunity arises.

Sometimes taking a deep breathe and taking the emotion out of this stuff helps see the bigger picture.

It makes sense. If it works it puts us in a fantastic opportunity with a big window for success.

If it fails, it moves out out of the 8 next year but doesn’t prolong us as a bottom rung side.

There is a lot more to gain from this approach then lose.

Question to those who have spoken to Gresham or know more about him then myself, is he a bit of a prick?

Just the vibe i get.
No. But has a high opinion of himself.

On a fantastic salary. Has those close to him talking him up. Etc

That’s not true at all.

He is a stkilda listed player. If he needs surgery. He gets it.

If he gets traded, he is right to go for his new club.

I notice King and Steele and a few others are going under the knife for major repairs. I think any player who has been on the sidelines for extended periods, is going struggle to stay on the list. We saw how we were basically out-muscled by GWS, and to go forward we can't carry fragile bodies. Will there be more delistings?
That's basically just Jones and Dmac for chronic issues.
Coff is a different case but you've got to weigh up the 2 years of lost development at the most critical phase and I'd suggest now that statistically he'd be no greater chance than the pick 30 something we might get for him.

What am I missing here? Multiple clubs desperate to get a KP back. This tells me they are thin on the ground.
We have Howard and as seen v GWS no real replacement.
But we are going to trade this supposedly rare commodity without someone who can fill the void?
Are we relying on Van Es or Cordy? Please tell me this is not the case.
We were totally exposed v GWS, not just Cordy but apart from Battle, the whole backline.
This is a very high risk strategy. Howard is not great, we all know that, but with him in the backline our structure is superior to when he is not.

Our backline was exposed because of our poor pressure up the ground.
Not much the defenders can do when it comes in that quick from transition.

Except its not lost development, its postponed development.
I'd be interested in your statistics, i wouldn't expect that's true.

If thats the case then there's a reason for it. I suspect he's already had his surgery long ago.
Eight Saints will undergo surgery in the next week, as preparations for the next pre-season already get underway.

Jack
Steele (ankle), Max King (shoulder), Brad Crouch (knee), Jack Hayes (knee), Dougal Howard (finger), James Van Es (ankle), Mason Wood (shoulder) and Dan Butler (ankle) will all undergo procedures to ready them for a big summer.

you're welcome

I’m down for this. Let’s do it properly

I'm cautious, because the same people are still there that ****ed it up last time with some new additions. I feel a bit safer but they have a terrible drafting history until recently. Selling off all your players to replace the players they paid top dollar for is not a system that looks well thought out. Looks like they are desperate. Port have balanced it well. If we cut hard and end up bottom 4 for a few years the same people that love the idea will be the first ones wanting heads to roll.

Lethlean has had to rebuild twice in his time after reviewing the list. If this doesn't get his head on a pike I don't know what he could do to lose his job. Pretty much most of his keepers and his overpriced recruits will be gone in a couple of years. Absolutely nothing to show for anything he's done.

The stupid part about players getting surgery is that Van Ess was injured in round 16 and was never going to be playing again this season yet they wait 9 weeks to book him in.
The stupid thing would be sending a player in for surgery when the situation is controllable and in the clubs hand.

It couldn’t get worse. So it’s better to have the warm body around in case the side chasing a finals position loses its Key backs to freak injuries. Then it’s next man up.

Is it a likely scenario? No
But it’s the path you take when you’re chasing a finals berth.

If we were dead in the water outside the 8. Heaps of the boys would have been done and dusted. King included

I think it's a bit stupid if we don't have a replacement for him myself. Maybe Ethan Phillips will get a run by default. It seems weird list management. I'm starting to get a bit nervous about SOS and his bin chicken list building and trading out players.

Look, this is just a very small observation of Heath, and one that I had very soon after his selection. So he was very young and raw.
In that context: he had the ball in a pack, bent over and in that split second before being tackled, he leaned into the tackle with his shoulder.
I saw that and immediately knew that he had a sense of the game.
Whether he has the ability to play, I have now seen enough to say yes.
Good mark, can kick and kick goals, plays a little like Roma in that he will follow up his ruck work with tackles.
The question remains at what level.
That’s the essence of the current debate.

He shows signs at least, he looks a way off but he gives hope with some of his games. He's definitely worth persisting with.
