When checking BigFooty and messaging my Mrs. is any different on a new phone, I might finally upgrade my S10.
Or if I suddenly feel a need to fold my phone!
Had the S10 before the 23, I see you're a man of taste 😎

Ok thanks.

On the back of those seasons, ignoring his injury years, would he have been a lock in your best 22 or is he fringe at best?
Finished 5th in the Saints best and fairest in 2020. Also played in the final against the dogs in the same year. Form slipped in 2021 and then it has been an unlucky couple of years with injuries.

Can any kind Saints supporters tell me if Coffield played any footy on the wing with you guys?

Is that a role he could potentially play?

Also, what are his knocks?

Cheers
Hes a funny one Coff. My 2 cents.

He is absolutely not a wingman. Not a forward. Not a mid. Saw all of those tried with him at Sandy in the first few years after he was drafted. Could not get a kick in the VFL.

Ratten settled him at half back and he blossomed for about 12-18 months. Very good decision maker with ball in hand. Solid if unspectacular kick. Good set of hands, but isnt really one to be taking intercept pack marks. More just good reading of the play and being in the right spot. Not brilliant defensively (dont leave him 1v1 in the goal square), but not a complete liability either.

At his best think something like Grant Birchall. Not a KPD or a small lockdown defender. But a highbrid that in the right defensive system with freedom to operate he can really hurt a team. Play him in a foreign role he can look like a space cadet.

Biggest issue is consistancy. Gap between best and worst is huge. But he has also had no continuity due to poor development and injury. Only time he stayed in the same side in the same role for a decent period, he exploded. If you can get him injury free and give him a single clear role at half back, you have a potential gem.

Best game I have ever seen him play was the 2020 final we beat you. Paddy Ryder was BOG, but Coff was a close second. If you can stomach watching the game again, he is basically the reason we hold on

Not the most courageous player ever to pull on the boots. Very much a confidence player and when he's on, he reads it very well.

Here's something to brighten up a boring trade thread. Let's make this happen - a 3-way exchange between list managers of Port, St Kilda, and Essendon.

Feels so right, it can't be wrong, rockin and rollin all week-long these days are our Happy Days.

He was fantastic in 2020. Almost borderline AA. Was leading intercepts and marks across the comp at about round 21. Next year Richardson started dropping him and seemed to be doing some tough love stuff that seemed to make him lose confidence. Then had 2 seasons out injured.

He's really an unknown quantity. If his body holds up he could be an absolute steal. He looked a lot better and more consistent than Hunter Clark has even though HC probably has had more eye catching moments.
Think you mean Ratten, Richo was gone by 2019

No I think we’ve xxxxxx our whole trade period. This might be the most st Kilda trade period ever, it‘s mind boggling what goes on at this club. We talk down the players we want to trade to the point where they have little value then act surprised when other clubs don’t offer us overs for players we don’t want.

The thought of paying over for Henry who I’m not even interested in fills me with dread, if we must have him at least get him cheap. So let’s just wait and see who stares down who, if I was a betting man my money would be on us blinking first.

Do you have any proof that we (St Kilda Football Club) talk down the players we wish to trade as opposed to we (St Kilda fans) talk down the players we wish to trade?

I thought he was really consistent in 2020. His marking is excellent, he literally lead the league for marks up until the second last round of the season and intercept marks. Tom Stewart went past him when they played finals. His kicking was nearly elite too but if anything his slow decision making made us slow on the rebound. He and Paton both had a habit of slowing play by looking for the best option rather than going fast.

I think that might have been what kept him out of more games in 2021. We switched to a faster rebound game and Coff couldn't get the ball moving quick enough and he was strangely flat footed for guy who was meant to be a great runner and quick.

The Western Bulldogs’ Pick 39 could be involved in a Nick Coffield trade with St Kilda, reports The Age.

The Saints earlier this week confirmed Coffield, who was drafted with Pick 8 in 2017, was keen to join the Bulldogs after two injury-interrupted seasons, with his most recent AFL game being in Round 23, 2021.

But the Saints are also locked in a free agency stand-off with Essendon over Jade Gresham, while they’re also keen to acquire Paddy Dow from Carlton and Liam Henry from Fremantle.

The Age reported Pick 39, which the Bulldogs acquired from Brisbane during last year’s trade period as part of the Josh Dunkley deal, could be involved in the deal that’d Coffield to Whitten Oval.

The Saints, according to the report, would like Pick 39 to be used in negotiations with Freo for Henry. But the Dockers have already placed a high price on top-10 draftee Henry, who had an excellent finish to his 2023 campaign.

A possible compensation pick from the AFL for losing restricted free agent Gresham to Essendon could also help the Saints unlock deals for Henry and/or Dow. But the Bombers still haven’t officially lodged an offer for Gresham, meaning the Saints haven’t decided whether to match the deal and, therefore, force a trade.

It’s expected the Saints would match the Bombers’ bid if Essendon’s offer didn’t trigger an end-of-first-round compensation pick.

Coff will be a good half back for the dogs.
He’s an AFL level footballer.
But he’s directly behind sincs and Nas here now in his role and we couldn’t justify giving him a similar contract to what the dogs will, when he’s outside the 22.

Same case with Dow, he will be good but Carlton have 2 absolute guns in Cripps and Walsh, then imported Cerra and Hewitt who are above Dow in pecking order now.
Dow will be quite handy for us I reckon.

This is a simple game and we don’t play it well, you can hate bell and dodo but they know how it works. Did we openly bag them out, of course not but when connors gets on the radio pleading billing’s case the club should follow up with jacks a pick 3, contracted, we understand he’s frustrated after a bad run of injuries but he’s a required player.

We don’t do that and you might have heard the different list mangers and the responses they gave to questions about players and trades, some were adamant about retaining players as a fall back position. We on the other hand drop a guy like Howard then shop him around according to our in the knows and the media.

I’m sorry Doc but it’s a lousy way to approach trade week and leaves us holding a poor hand in any negotiations. Why do st Kilda always feel the need to trumpet our intentions instead of the standard lines of we’ll see what develop‘s, we’ll listen to what other clubs have to offer blah blah. No it’s we want to hit the draft, this has been mentioned several times in the press, at the b&f I believe. How stupid do other clubs have to be not to know we’re motivated sellers?

Is it too much to ask that we just shut up, play a straight bat and do the usual which is negotiate hard ?. Plenty of time to trumpet how we’ve created cap space or whatever the line is after the trade period is over Imo.

I reckon it's Battle that has his spot. Most clubs play a defensive spare as an interceptor. Lyon seems to like to play his "extra" in the middle for run and to cover for our lack of quality in there. Battle is more of an accountable one on one that can peel off and still has some size without giving up too much agility. I think Coff's best role would have been the Sam Fisher interceptor/distributor.

Yeah, we'd be terrible at poker.

In what fashion have we trumpeted our intentions at all? Every move so far has been played out by the media without any influence from us. You literally mention Howard but there has been absolutely no club based notion that he was ever on the trade table and he was never dropped he was just not brought back early from a broken wrist.

So far we actually ARE negotiating hard by 1) Arguing against Fremantles want for a first rounder for Liam Henry. 2) Demanding an actual usable pick for Coffield 3) wanting a token pick paid for Dow considering Carlton really dont want him at all and 4) Stating that we will match a poor compensation pick/contract for Gresham and either keep him or force a trade.

I'm pretty sure we shopped a few players and Howard looks like one of them. We were actively trying to get another FRDP and Howard, Gresham, Billings types were being dangled. Unfortunately they were more parsnips than carrots by the look of it.

I'm still hoping that we keep them and back them getting back to their best than cashing out and gambling again.
