Essendon and St Kilda are moving closer to a deal that would give the Saints an end-of-first-round selection as free agency compensation for forward Jade Gresham, a source familiar with the talks but not authorised to speak publicly said.

There were hopes paperwork could have been lodged on Thursday, but it’s expected an agreement will be in place before Friday’s 5pm deadline for free agency offers to be made.

If the Saints match an offer for Gresham, the Dons would need to trade for him, a scenario they do not want.

Meanwhile, the Western Bulldogs’ second-round selection of 39 could be involved for the deal to send Nick Coffield, the No.8 pick in 2017, to Whitten Oval.

The Saints would like that pick to be used for Fremantle wingman Liam Henry, though an earlier second-round pick, either this year or next, may be needed for Saints list boss Stephen Silvagni to acquire the Dockers’ Next Generation Academy product he bid for with pick nine in 2019 when at Carlton.

Paddy Dow’s late-season improvement could net the Blues a fourth round or future-third round selection from St Kilda.

Dow, whom Silvagni selected with pick three in 2017 and played 73 games for the Blues, has a three-year offer with the Saints.

Think you mean Ratten, Richo was gone by 2019

True. They are starting to blend in with each other.

What was all the pissing about this week if Dodoro ultimately ends up giving us what we wanted anyway

What a waste of time this whole two weeks is lol

In what fashion have we trumpeted our intentions at all? Every move so far has been played out by the media without any influence from us. You literally mention Howard but there has been absolutely no club based notion that he was ever on the trade table and he was never dropped he was just not brought back early from a broken wrist.

So far we actually ARE negotiating hard by 1) Arguing against Fremantles want for a first rounder for Liam Henry. 2) Demanding an actual usable pick for Coffield 3) wanting a token pick paid for Dow considering Carlton really dont want him at all and 4) Stating that we will match a poor compensation pick/contract for Gresham and either keep him or force a trade.
What have you heard from Carlton, Fremantle, Essendon and the bulldogs?. What was said at the b&f, what was quoted in the papers?. How about we just play the bloody game, plenty of time to sell what did or didn’t happen after the trade period is over.

What do you think Dow and Henry are really worth? Let’s see what we pay. What is Gresham really worth? Let’s see the offer and so on.

I hate it when we dangle the wrong vegetable.
I'm pretty sure we shopped a few players and Howard looks like one of them. We were actively trying to get another FRDP and Howard, Gresham, Billings types were being dangled. Unfortunately they were more parsnips than carrots by the look of it.

I'm still hoping that we keep them and back them getting back to their best than cashing out and gambling again.

He’s getting other players in and trading others out knowing he has the upper hand with us hanging on this pick. If he pays up he’s still lost nothing but at least he tried for the best deal he could get, I think that’s just fair play.

Yep…Butters is elite & I’ve got a gut feeling Nas won’t be a long termed with us!

If you were a list manager it would be a no brainer. You take the guy that is pretty much elite already but the thought of losing one of the few good kids that we've managed to draft ourselves is a pretty awful thought. I want both. You'd rather give up a bunch of first round picks.

Can any kind Saints supporters tell me if Coffield played any footy on the wing with you guys?

Is that a role he could potentially play?

Also, what are his knocks?

Cheers
He’s an intercept defender, reasonable by foot & good pair of hands.
He’s had 3 leg injuries in the past 2 years but looks ok now…could be a handy pick up for you guys at very little cost.
Knock on him from my point of view is he’s a bit soft

You do realise Essendon didn’t acknowledge Shiel at all during last weeks BnF when It was thought he was coming to us.

As for Fremantle, they as asking a top 10 pick for Henry who has arguably shown less then Coffield. But trying to play on the fact he had a few decent disposal games late.

And your previous posts about Billings are off the mark. Why is it a necessity the club say something after his manager tried to sell him like a late night infomercial?

He struggles when he needs to defend 1on1

This is all much better news. A late second for Coff seems optomistic but I'll take it if we can pull it off.
