What I mean is what’s in it for the player if he’s not guaranteed to be taken by his nominated club in the national draft?
He most likely gets to play for the club of his choice, which his Dad played for.

That's the whole concept of father sons. ;)

Vader going back to the Ben Jarman drafting ....it was at the time, if you nominated a father / son in the main draft, you were obligated to take him ....UNLESS, he was bid on, then you could refuse to meet the bid

It's why we only nominated Jarman as a Rookie father son ....and not in the main draft

Is this still the case now with Welsh ?
I'm not totally certain. There are 2 separate F/S Nomination dates - today (31st Oct) and Friday 22nd November. The November date pre-selects them in the RD, so you don't need to worry about being gazumped.

In any case, it's a moot point, given our lack of list positions. We won't have the option of hoping he falls through to the RD, as we won't have any rookie list vacancies - and thus no ability to pre-select him ahead of the RD.

I get that, it works for us, but the player doesn’t seem to get much, I can understand if they go high and the collateral was a lot, but with a later pick?

Does the player automatically go on to the rookie list if no one picks him?
Yes, they do.

But given our list spots, we’ll take home with our last pick if a bid doesn’t come.

What’s in it for Tyler? Is it not obvious?
He wants to play for the Crows and now he’s guaranteed a spot on the list unless a bid comes early.

He’s way more likely to get to us now than he would in open draft.

What do people think about Josh Smilie? Would he be a good fit for us if Smith / Draper is gone?
Concern for me over Smilie was he didn't step up when the quality stepped up - ie at the Nationals - although he wasn't terrible, which leads to the thought that maybe he was bullying the general U18 league with his size advantage. Not a great mark for his height but a very good kick. Wonder if he'll potentially be a defender rather than mid. Good player - maybe 7-12 range rather than the top echelon.

Surely you want to be a decent mark to be a defender, especially at that height.

I actually think it is the opposite of stupid.

In sure plenty of people would have never heard the Aboriginal names of places … it’s great that more people are made aware.

Or are you one of those “it’s Ayer’s Rock” thinkers?
If you want people to change their views or actions, you want them to be slightly uncomfortable with their current status quo. But directly challenging them about their views/ actions has been shown to be counter productive to change.

Using indigenous names, acknowledgement of/ welcome to country etc were all well intentioned. But what have they actually changed for indigenous Australians?

Apart from making white people less uncomfortable with what they are (not) doing to create equal opportunities for success for indigenous people?

I think it's got to the point that Kuwarna is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Sorry it's a bit heavy for this time of morning/ a football forum.

I think it's more that he hasn't often pushed forward and taken big contested marks that you might expect from a 195cm guy - in a way Langford has at 190cm. That would take him to next level as a prospect. Although you could level the same criticism at Cripps and he seems to have worked out ok.

I’d love to get a feel for what we all would - EXPECT - HOPE - HATE - from our first pick on draft night … so there aren’t the classic rewrites of history after the draft!! It’s so easy to take pot shots at decisions after the fact when you never specifically laid out what you would have done.

For me:

EXPECT - to pick Draper because he is from SA.

HOPE - pick Langford because he is the best player available at our pick.

HATE - we move back in this draft to get a player we “love” and move the surplus collateral into next year OR even worse, we just use pick 4 on a player that is rated much lower!

Expect - Draper if available, Langford over Smith if Draper gone

Hope - Lalor, FOS or Draper (in that order) to make it to 4

Hate - we pick outside of Lalor, FOS, Draper, Langford or Smith
