Ya reckon Richmond will take Langford just because we have rumours to take him ??!!

Surely doesn’t work like that

Alot of mental gymnastics going on in the thread to justify why we’d be interested in Langford

It simply comes down to the fact he’s a dominant midfield prospect , why wouldn’t we be interested

* still reckon we take Draper if he’s there but it’s very close and people underestimate Langford in here
I don't know whether it's underestimation or people are crapping themselves that we'd be "too tall and slow"

Hilarious that we are relying on an 18 yo kid at pick 4 to balance out needs for our average side 😂

There would be 0 thinking about next season with this pick , it’s a long term pick the way it should be

Are you sure?

The club is very short term focused as a whole

No that’s not what I reckon. Guess it is an extremely simplistic take on it though.

How so Jeff ?

I seem to recall a number of Mids drafted having an influence in year 1

I hear Daicos and Ashcroft went ok …. Windsor and Wilson had a big influence this year

Harley Reid anyone ? ….. Wardlaw, Sheezel & McKercher ?

Of course there’s no guarantees …. but to dismiss possibilities outright, is failing to recognise the preparedness for AFL footy, many of these draftees have these days

think you’re missing the point re looking at needs when the pick will be more about talent re midfielder , of course Langford and Draper could play well in year 1 but that won’t be determining factor

I think that there is also a bit of a distinction between slow by foot and slow by ball movement.

Langford doesn't have a fast few steps, he gets the ball to the outside by standing up in tackles and getting out (quality) handballs. But he does seem to move well on the outside (and looks agile) once on the move. He doesn't appear to get caught once on the move. However, he is an attacking mid and will help with our fast ball movement to forwards.

Smith is almost the opposite. He does have a fast few steps, and gets the ball to the outside by being evasive and then hitting targtets sideways/ short forward. However, he isn't an overly attacking mid and can look for safer disposals rather than fast ball movement to forwards. But he has recognised this shortcoming and is working on it.

I'm still undecided as to whch I'd prefer if Lalor, FOS and Sid were off the table. But might now be leaning toward langford.

We're on the final stretch run with the National Draft only a couple of weeks away. Just like last season I'll be producing a series of full season highlights videos for the top prospects, and first up is Sid the kid, the SANFL Sensation Sid Draper.

I know it's highlights, but I hope this helps to dispel the rumours that he is a poor kick.

You watch Jeff, how each club taking the best player avail in the Draft, will magically meet a need

It’s spooky how that happens year on year …. there are exceptions like Daicos and Reid, who are Franchise Players … but they’re an outlier, rather than the norm

It’s always been a load of crap, AFL clubs spin to their supporters

Also, remember what you can get away with in U18s …. you can’t at AFL level

Langford reminds me of a Philippou in style ….. he looks not to be a first touch mid, but a first receive mid

Lucky our need is midfielders and Langford and Draper are mids

Bit of a similar style to Simon Goodwin I reckon re Langford , he’s slow but has a high cruising speed and gets from inside to outside very well

Also gets from end to end

He’s a very balanced player , no one trick pony

I think it's easy to get stuck into the very fine detail on the top 5 or 6 players when it's probably fair to say that if it's a case of "all things being equal" we should probably take the SA kid - and just look at the varying phantom drafts everyone is releasing, things could not be more equal.

For multiple reasons I think taking the best SA prospect is both predictable and very easily justified. If Draper is there at 4 (Lalor won't get to 4) we will surely take him.

There might almost be a reputational advantage to us if he's taken before 4 - as we would be half a chance to bring him home later anyway, and don't have to suffer the embarrassment of not drafting the best SA kid (see also: not getting Neale or Rozee).

It's arguable Smith and FOS are better (or will be better), but it's hard not to really like this guy. Has all the traits except elite disposal really.

His gut running to link up further down the chain is a real point of difference for our midfield (although, it's also something peatling does well)
