Been saying this for weeks. Everyone has assumed smillie would fall to us. Or Richmond hole he will be off the table.
It’s more that everyone has assumed that Norf and Rich would get a trade done that’d involve 6 getting to Norf

That’s less likely now. So we come into play. Smillie won’t matter anymore if that’s the case

For the draft watchers that get down into the weeds.

I can't remember where the interview was but do remember Dalrymple saying he looked most at the hands of the recruits implying their ability to take possession and execute under pressure.

Does this change the order of the top 8 or does it elevate someone from outside that group into calculation?
Well , he’d love Smillie then. Exceptional Hands.

…

That leaves a slide down to one of our picks and our future pick which is better value when trading it in for a later first rounder this year.
And you are okay with that trade? Going from three first round picks over two drafts to two? I’d prefer to do 7 and 8 for 2 and F1 that way we retain three first rounders.

Hold up.

8 and our F1.

Gets North Tauru or Armstrong.

Lalor
FOS (Saints)
Draper
Langford
Reid (Melbourne)
Smillie
JAGGA (Saints)
Armstrong/Tauru (North P8)
Issue is North would ideally like to split pick 2 in this draft they need more picks this year.

If it did happen I can't see Jagga falling through one of Adel Mel or Rich would grab him (or at least I hope they do I am not a big fan) I think a more likey outcome would be:

1. Rich - Lalor
2. StK - FOS
3. Carl - Draper
4. Adel - Jagga
5. Mel - Langford
6. Rich - Smillie
7. StK - One of Reid / Allan
8. North - Tarau

Hyopothetically: It might be out of those top 7 mids we have some we just don't rate or want eg. say we aren't keen on Reid or Langford in which case the trade up for FOS is definitely on the cards.

Our list hypothetically could look like this if we think Athleticism Power Size and Speed are critical.

  1. Lalor
  2. FOS
  3. Smillie
  4. Draper
  5. Allan
  6. Tarau
  7. Travaglia

In that case snaring 2 of our top 5 is definitely worth the investment. Alternatively if this was Richmonds list you could see why they wouldn't think of trading 6. But might have considered 10 and 11/18 for 2.

if we land Fos or Jagga at 2.

7 becomes a huge slide back opportunity or your landing Jagga/Smillie/Langford anyway

In which case we drafted 2 blokes who at different stages this year were the number 1 pick choices.

I’ve already explained how they can get there

Are you trying to trigger us all? We would be absolutely insane to trade one of our picks out of this year's draft and into next year.

Kangas would be scrambling a bit with Stephenson pulling the plug, prob means anything that was discussed or agreed previously is out the window, NM will be wanting another good selection this year to fill that spot.

I'd consider putting 7 & 8 together for 2 and a F2, then use that F2 and 32 to get back into a pick in the teens, maybe with GWS at 15 or 16....means 7, 8 and 32 for 2 and 15-ish

Been reported that Adelaide are into Langford and seemingly more so than Jagga

Melbourne want a big bodied mid

Richmond like Smillie

Leaves Jagga to slide

If North are even remotely keen on 8+F1 for 2, thats a WAYYYY better deal for us than your proposal IMO

Jagga could slide. I think clubs prefer the damaging types over the accumulators these days. I think it depends on what north do. If they hold pick 2 take best available in FOS leaving Carlton to take Draper/langford/reid/smillie. I don’t think they would take another accumulator and same as Adelaide. Melbourne are an unknown so they could potentially take him but he could easily slide through if Tiges are keen as on smillie. I’d be happy with him although he’s not my favourite.

Terrible deal. No way we trade both pick 7 and 8

Melbourne fans seemingly want a big bodied mid and like Langford I think. Carlton will take Draper from what Ive seen from its fans - they need outside run and speed. Smillie to Richmond seems likely

So really, if things go as expected assuming we can get pick 2, we are a massive chance to get FOS + Jagga which would be a massive W and worthy of the F1 sacrifice. FOS + Allan as a worst-case scenario is not bad too considering our midfield lacks speed atm

I know this is all shitposting, but remember the strategy the Saints have outlined in the media ( and the President at the B&F) numerous times was we hit the draft four four years, then go HAM on FA.
We aren't looking to have less frdps this year we are actively attempting to trade our frdp out of the heavily compromised NGA and FS draft in '25.
And we are not actively trying to trade 7 & 8 for a higher dp, that is just not happening.

As stav has pointed out we may try 8 and F1 ( or 8 and F1 and F2 at a pinch) for 2, then draft night frollicks with pick 7 considering how the picks fall.

Or as others have said it may be a three club deal as North can't get the value without disadvantages to the trading club.

One thing I reckon is absolutely certain, we have 2 top ten picks this draft or one top ten and two mid teen dps.

We certainly won't have just one top ten pick and trading out into next year no matter how good the top ten pick is. Just does not make any sense with the stated objectives of the club when it comes to drafting and FA plans.
