A lot of people assume that Lyon wants inside accumulators. He's never been a coach that rates them as highly as others. He loves runners who play multiple roles or limited taggers who stifle ahead of them even.

If they rack up numbers but won't play defensive footy or move to provide options for others he doesn't want them. He does rate X factor game breakers though. If you narrow the lens to cover that I think you could knock out a few players we all like.

Allan looks pretty Ross Lyon to me. He moves well and is naturally defensive. I can see him as a Lyon favourite. I'm not overly attached to him but see his charm.
I think it would be irresponsible to use top 10 draft picks on a coaches preferred type as opposed to drafting best available.

The other option would be to start Allen in a tagging role which would free up Windhager to be more attacking.

I reckon they'd throw him in a HBF role to start with.

There is such an even spread of talent this draft that preference will be a lot more relevant. SOS is also a Lyon coconspirator. He's there to push Lyon's barrow. Not sure what the power balance is with Dalrymple but you imagine he takes orders from LM.

I'd assume Allan starts at half back then becomes a tagger in Year 2 as part of his midfield development

Normally you wouldn't chuck a kid into a pure role-playing position for their first taste of AFL - it stunts their development imo because they're so focused on doing one task. Would rather let him play with a bit more freedom to start with, let him build some confidence and get used to the level and what it demands, then let him hone in on craft whether it be through tagging or whatnot

I don’t think we can bank on Windhager making it as a mid. He’s yet to show the he can be a consistently damaging player
It was his first year as a full time mid. Injury and suspension interrupted. As long as he can get rid of his clangers and maintain a linear trend of development (through his hard work), I think he'll be fine as a serviceable premiership mid

If we develop a strong midfield I seriously see Windhager becoming a good lockdown backman who can release and spread.

I do not follow ?

Nth Picks Tauru at 7, there is no difference in the player available at Pick 8
It's not about Tauru. Why would St Kilda willingly want to go backwards in the draft and then allow another club access to 3 of the best mids available? How does that advantage us as a club looking for midfielders?

And even if all 6 picks before us took mids, we would still have the option ourselves to draft Tauru with 7/8 or trade with a club desperate for him where we are much more likely to get a better deal than you are proposing.

Hopefully Hunter avoids getting polaxed by Zac Jones this preseason..
That was a shocker saintmike65......good ol Zac certainly had "form" as far as the "friendly fire" went early last season.

I have to say saintmike65....your absolutely on fire with the posting today.......Melb Cup day specials I suspect.

:):):)

And re your comments on Bo.....I for one will be extremely interested come draft night whether our recruiters deem him a "prospect" or not.

With his "pros and cons"....I certainly rate him.

I think for those who are concerned about Allan are so because he seems to one rated on what he could be, rather than what he is right now.

I don’t think he’s proven himself to be a top 15-20 footballer in this draft but i think if everything goes right he could end up a top 5 player.

Probs a bit harsh. He's been consensus rated around 10 for a long time and has a WAFL premiership to his name already playing mid and HB and was state captain (IIRC). Thems pretty good accolades.
WA talent manager thinks if he was a ViC kid - he would be going top 5.

It was in the interview I posted yesterday + Sunday

Trust the talent managers as far as I can throw them, they’ll all say what they have to get their kids drafted as high as they can.

Access to the draftees is incredible now. 5 years ago it was mates filming champs or TAC games on their phone and seeing as much footage of old guys scratching their arses as you did of kids. Now you can access everything.

We still have zero control and still need to hope that we don't get the selections wrong though.
Absolutely so much better now but really down to one guy on YouTube and his posting in the draft thread cudos to noobermensch but incredible that the AFL doesn’t release this footage themselves. I assume they are trying to protect the kids from too much scrutiny given they are 17-18 but it seems like such a missed opportunity.

As for the coverage by mainstream journos Cal is great but is Kevin Sheehan-esque when discussing draftees only discusses the positives. Good that the Age and Herald Sun are doing more but paywalls suck. As you would expect they tend to take the Journalist approach to their rankings even their early power rankings and they more represent what others in the industry think and are saying than their own opinion. The group think is strong with these guys and that tends to shape all the opinions on here as to relative rankings. This idea there are Tiers in a draft seems to be a Cal Twoomey concept not sure I buy it. Last year for example Tier 1 consisted of one player Harley.

Rookie Me Central has been really good for a long time and are for the first time dipping their toes in providing video if limited at this stage and their power rankings are genuine lists of their collective opinion hence Jagga at 1 Reid at 3 Allan at 5 in their current list for example, and they do the hard yards and watch nearly all the CTL games and bias towards performance and stats hence Lalor and FOS are lower on their rankings.

Then there has been a bit of an explosion of YouTube amateurs having a crack some decent like Dylan Alexander for example and the craft of the draft guys who are dull and a bit repetitive but at least they have watched the kids.

But it still could be so much better just got to balance out the intrusion this could have on kids being put under the spotlight

Missing not only the most highly rated 6 mids, only to give away the highest rated tall... can't for the life of me understand why a Richmond nuffie would come onto our board and try to sell that trade to us...

See Wilson and Phillipou for details. It is usually only a Judd or Reid that goes straight to the mids, and Reid was shut down pretty easily by a tagged and got pretty frustrated.

You can only play and be rated as good as your opposition
Take it you haven’t listened to the audio.

His opinion was that Allan was the best prospect out of WA but that WA SA + Allies would have a poor draft crop overall and thus it wouldn’t be a super draft. However the vic kids are very good this year.

He directly compared Allan against those vic kids and said based on testing + attributes etc he would be a top 5 pick if he was part of that vic crop this year.

He didn’t say anything outlandish ie he should be pick 1. But in the middle to end of that top 10 hence his belief it’s either us or Melbourne who take him and he won’t make it to either WA side at 12+14

He said he will play early and he is a likely captain at AFL level.

He said he likes to keep a close eye on the trades and picks etc to work out where his boys would go and that he thinks Allan would fit in at those clubs.

Possibly. The context however was that it was Sen WA and he was asked if he would make it to West coast 12 or Freo 14.

It wasn’t selling him to VIC listeners.

Zac gets white line fevour. Yelling at bj because he wasn't throwing it in quick enough during match sim. I like the attitude.

Well from his past posting on here, he is either not the full quid or has a twelve year olds grasp on trading picks.

I'm going out on a limb, going full gringo2011 and will say over a career Murphy Reid will be the best player in the draft.

A few people on a forum saying he is slow, or projecting as a potential small forward shouldn't cloud your own judgement- which it did mine.

How many people have actually focussed on his footy IQ, fend offs, ability to find time in traffic. He is often in a canter because he has more time than most. His kicking is good, handballing is elite, movement in close is elite, he should be the pairing to whoever is at 7.

As for the speed concerns, absolutely unfounded, his preseason testing had him going under 3 seconds for 20m!

CENTRE HALF BACK:
Will Hoare 24yo 197cm key defender for Essendon VFL is attracting a bit of interest. I must say when Sandi played the Bombers VFL I was impressed with Essendons tall defenders.

RUCKMAN:
Last night I also watched the round 15 WAFL game between East Fremantle and Peel Thunder with Lachlan Blakiston and Max Knobel pitted against each other in the ruck. Knobel is the far superior tap ruckman and when he grows into his body will be the much better player IMO. Blakiston plays very much like Rhys Stanley he has a good leap, is quite agile but not a lot else to his game. Knobel got his hands to a lot of marking contests and with more upper body strength will start clunking them. He is a big lump of a lad and is quite lumbering around the ground, but when given space his kicking skills are very good.

Knobel 20yo would be my choice he projects ahead of Blakiston longer term, however Blakiston might interest us more because of his run and ability to play now. Blakiston has the tools he just needs to involve himself more physically in games ala Stanley.

Gold Coast handing them ridiculous overs has warped their minds so they think every other club will just hand them things.
