Twomey and AFL media were obviously a bit taken aback by the Saints supporters reaction to his phantom, hence he has tried to back track and soften the information. Its a bit comical suggesting Tauru might also become a midfielder, and likened him to Charlie Curnow.

100%

i don't think the rest of the comp gets the St Kilda predicament. this is another sign they don't get it.

i suspect you're looking at the end part of the scenario where he had already agree to terms with hawthorn

the issue was our initial offer and how we initially approached the situation. along with how we re-signed him under Gags.
I was responding to the post about pick 8 not what may or may not have happened 3 years earlier.

He is very good with WA football news.

Pick 9 was led from a far less respected source in John Donohue from SEN (admittedly he is a fan)
Fair enough, if we were in the running recruitment team not good enough to get it done then
Can't win them all

i have to disagree with him. its pretty easy to say it, but the reality is the need for a genuine elite mid has been missed again, if it pans out the way he thinks it will.

our only hope is adelaide call out langford which is looking unlikely.

It's the comment about "oh well he'll still be a 200 gamer on the half back flank.

We're screaming out for pure A Grade mids. How Cal can't or won't realise this is amazing.

At the end of the day if the top 7 goes the way Cal has forecast my hope is that the club chooses only one of Tauru and Tobie. If it means we trade down to grab the next rung of mids so be it. But we need mids. Have been screaming for them for years.

Is it just me or have our phantom write ups been very much ‘take the next one in the order’? Ie I haven’t read much if anything that says “Saints love x or y”. Maybe reference to Lindsay. Berry is a new one thrown up. But most of the commentary hasn’t really alluded to anything suggesting that a club is trying to get ahead of us for someone or we’re trying to do the same and so on. I could be wrong.
Yeah how was the sneaky drop from Cal today that "Berry is in the mix" for our second pick if we were to grab a midfielder that slides to 7

Mate,

I still think we will get at least very good mid with either 7 or 8

Just can't believe people are taking last nights mock draft as gospel. Cal himself has said this year is very even and hard to pick
Mock draft says we get the players we want = 100% correct no further questions

Mock draft says we don't get the players we want = still up for debate lots to play out Cal is not always right

in what way is it mortgaging everything you have on one player?

its a pittance. the cap is only going up, driven by the collective group of AFL players and the TV rights.

if we want to retain any player you just put them on long term deals and smooth it out/back end it. how do you think these clubs afford these guys on fat contracts when they're already paying other blokes on huge deals.
I wasn't referring to Battle.

There's a hint in my post when I refer to Carlton & Melbourne

Couldn't give AF about Battle now TBH.

exactly this. it was always going to be extremely difficult to turn battle into an elite mid. there were too many moving parts.

  • needed ladder position
  • needed the compo to happen
  • needed the draft order to work
  • needed to select the right player
  • needed to develop said player into an elite mid

we didnt even get past step 1.

i'd rather pay battle 900k a year for 6 years than be in this position, where according to twomey we are selecting the very player battle already is. so we are going to spend the next 3-5 years developing the guy to see if he can even reach the level battle already was at.

its redic.

if people think this is good list management then you're going to spend the rest of your life watching the saints trying to get into the 6. continually providing other clubs with ready made talent for their own finals push.

That's all well and good but, if the reported timeline is to be believed, Battle was going regardless. He shopped around, we made our offer, he supposedly took less to go play for he Hawks.

It's why we were a little sweaty waiting on Band 1.

Would you prefer Battle right now over Tauru? Absolutely.

Was that possible? Nope.

So why stress about it.

We grab our new recruits tomorrow and keep moving forward.

There's getting shit done & then there's mortgaging everything you've got on one (albeit promising) young player.

Melbourne & Carlton are both in very different circumstances to us.

If it blows up in their faces (like it has for us with just single picks), they're gonna feel the hurt big time.
So do the work. Nail the ****ing pick.

Not everything that happens needs to be shrouded in ****ing misery.

We can be aggressive. Get shit done. Act like a club that thinks it’s on the up.

The balance is between being aggressive & losing your mind.

People are still throwing tantrums after we were aggressive to get the Hill trade done.

So Twomey thinks Tauru is Curnow like but also could be a midfielder? Righto.

If the big 6 mids are gone, I’d prefer we take Tauru & then split pick 8. Then take Lindsay or Reid etc, depending on who we think would be available.

Weird position to be in, I want Tauru but if we want one of the better mids he will have to be taken earlier than 7.

See what the “Late mail” phantom says tonight.

I disagree that Ross isn't the right person for a rebuild. He's really turned the standards around in terms of how our players prepare and present but I just think he's making the same mistakes that Richo and Ratten made playing players that aren't taking us closer to a premiership.

This is the main fundamental flaw I see at present with RTB. Everything else is a tick from me.

I'm pretty happy with how Ross is doing this.

I would have loved to see Keeler and/or Health late in the season but that's about it.

Could we play more kids? Sure, but I back in Ross and the coaching team making the calls.

Should you play kids that aren't deemed ready or should they be made to earn it?

Everyone chasing instant gratification. The idea that if we see the players in the seniors they will develop quicker is a fallacy IMO.

Some players need to be developed in a different way. Some players need the support of guys like Jones, Membrey etc to help their development.

I always think back to this bit from Tom Brady:

Crazy to melt over a mock phantom draft. Living a few hours behind Australia means my catch up is 20 pages. Hard to wade through! Anyway, here are a few random thoughts to add to the tumult.

I will admit to being slightly shocked at being tipped to get Tauru and TT. Both very good players with attributes that would probably suit us. And they both seem to have AA potential. But I get the angst about potentially not getting one of the supposed premium midfielders. And the fact that we have been down the path of trying to turn half back flankers into midfielders before.

It seems to me each one of the premium mids has a drawback of some kind. FOS not interviewing well, Draper’s back, Langford too slow, Smillie has bust potential, Allan can’t kick. Can’t help but think that in 5 years the draft order will not be seen in the same way. A couple of those guys will not end up premium. And some outside the top 10 will be. Trick is to project who is who.

Reid has lots of fans but the thing I noticed in watching a few videos is that his short passing seemed to be little chip kicks that travelled too high and just hung in the air. Interesting that he is out to 15 in the mock. Big call to think he would be picked at 7 or 8. Maybe with the split pick scenario?

How to give ourselves a better chance of getting a gun or two would be turning what we have into 3 or 4 picks inside the first 25. Very hard to do but that’s why we pay these guys the big bucks. We are in the hands of other clubs though.

If it did turn out that Tauru and TT were picked up by us I would be optimistic they would turn out to be tremendous players for us. And I’m not blaming Jack Higgins for a thing.
