People are quick to jump on other clubs decisions without really knowing where the list builds are at or how these kids will go in the future. Perhaps some hold a bit of a hidden grudge because said clubs elected not to trade with us?

I didnt mind Norths trade for #27, given they desparately need a big key defender and they probably rated Matt Whitlock higher than he landed. Sometimes clubs need to be bold to get the players they want. Norths major blunder was trading #25 for a midget, not so much tonight. We also have to consider a number of the top 10 next year will be linked to a club.

Every St Kilda supporter would be doing their load over Richmond's haul tonight, so to criticise them and prophercise that the kids taken are no good is just sour grapes and ridiculous IMO.

Tobie needs some Ritalin or something. Some may call it infectious but that was hard to watch. Nerves and all I'm sure, but the swaying and the over confidence of the kid is a bit much. The Ross the Boss talk, ug, spare me. It's all about the footy field so who really cares but that was a struggle.

As for Tauru, what a humble, appreciative young man who you just know is going to work his backside off.
No, you spare us

I think he's just pretty stoked to be on an afl list and was just excited

In terms of player type balance across the draft, and knowing the skill set we generally look for, then I'd have Hamish Davis edging out Hugh Boxshall for our next pick. Just need to make sure Eagles don't nab either with their pick.

Both seem a Dalrymple special, and Davis in particular sounds like an incredible prospects who has already performed in the forward half in WAFL Seniors.

I don't think Richmond have secured their future with tonight's draft. To be honest, I was surprised (and at times perplexed) by their decision-making.

Sure, there's a chance this will be looked upon as the greatest draft haul of all time - but they did take a few risks early (when there were definitely safer options still available) and I don't think their haul was the slam dunk I expected before the night began.
  • Lalor and Smillie look like guns. Lalor wasn't my #1 pick, but since there was no Harley Reid in this draft, it was always going to be a toss-up (which goes against Richmond - as the best player could easily have gone #2 or #3 etc).

  • I had Jonty Faull behind Shanahan, Armstrong and both Whitlocks. A really bizarre choice coming as early as it did. Of course, there's a chance they end up with Faull, Armstrong and one of Shanahan/J Whitlock anyway - but it's important to look at the landscape when Faull was taken at Pick #14. Bo Allan was still on the board. Murphy Reid was still on the board, Joe Berry, Cooper Hynes etc.

  • Taj Hotton is coming off an ACL and Trainor has the concussion issues. Both have huge upside, but you're taking a risk (especially with Trainor). All of the players mentioned above were available at Hotton's pick (#12) and you had players like Dattoli, both Whitlocks, Shanahan, Dodson, Moraes (who I highly rate and still hasn't been drafted) available at Trainor's pick (#21).
Overall, I don't think this haul secures Richmond's future. Now, having #1 and possibly #2 (thanks North) next year will help. But they have to nail the picks and we won't know that for years to come. As was said above, our three best players all came from the rookie list - while our prized #1 pick in 2014 (the future of our football club) played 35 games for us. Drafting isn't an exact science.
The draft and trade periods should be judged in totality not in insolation. Richmond gave up arguably their best player in Bolton in his prime, a gun in Rioli and decent player in Graham. Combined with the loss of Dusty the draftees have a fair sized hole to fill. There's no knowing what their collective talent will produce.

OUT
def: Battle, Paton, Bonner, Van Es
ruck: Campbell
mid: Ross, Hotton
fwd: Membrey, Hayes, Allison

IN
def: Tauru, Travaglia, Hofmann*, Cole*
ruck: X
mid: Macrae, Carroll
fwd: X, X, X

Wanted us to split pick 8, but pretty rapt with those first two picks on balance.

Reckon we've hit a pretty sweet spot in the draft for a key/mobile forward as well

Considering we lost Battle and Van Es, and that Cordy will be gone at the end of the year, and that Howard is not that good, we definitely did need to boost our KPD stocks..

and losing Bonner, Paton and Webster being old, getting Hofmann and Travaglia is also far from crazy.

Also, maybe we rate Carroll higher than the midfielders available at our picks.

Best available at our next pick, IMO. get someone who can impact at AFL level.
Getting a vfl standard midfielder does not help us!

So here's how I think we'll line up next year

B: Webster, Stocker, Howard, Cordy, McLennan, Cole, Tauru, Wilkie, Schoenmaker
HB: Nas, Sinclair, O'Connell, Caminiti, Travaglia, Clark, Windhager, Wilson
C:
HF
F: King

Foll:
Int: Hastie, Jones, Sharman, Hofmann

Players on the bench to rotate through defence
