Looks good, but tbh couldn’t understand a single word!
Ah Gaelic, the national language that all are forced to learn - even though only small predominately exclusive and wealthy pockets of the country use it meaningfully - and with with the other 95% coming through it understanding less than what they started with 🙄☘️🍻

Had a read of Norfs draft thread from draft night. Amazing they spent more time shit canning us about not getting a mid slider than they did about their own selections. Absolute vitriol. Must admit I savored their posts around the time they traded a future 1st (will be top 3 pick) for pick 27 and selected some weird looking campaigner that resembled the mountain men from the hills have eyes. Delightful ending to a fantastic read in the end.

I’ve spent three weeks in Ireland. Dublin to Galway and then the southern counties. Never found anyone I could not understand over and above the usual accent. This was quite something. All I heard was” roost.”

Cordy, parting gift from our former List Management Team. Hopefully we as a club can stop making stupid offers like the one we gave Cordy.

"Zaine Cordy will join St Kilda as an unrestricted free agent on a three-year deal."

Should have only been a one year deal. Three years was just a farce.
Not that I know, but I bet he was cheap. Has served his purpose as a back up.

Our midfield is pretty average but I really don't think it's as critical as some think. If Macrae can take up where Crouch left off our outside brigade is where our best assets sit. Nas, Sinclair, Hill, Wood, Wilson, Henry etc would be as good a group of outside run and transition players in footy. I reckon Shoenmaker could end up elite there too.

We were hit with an extraordinary amount of injuries to mids and forwards last year. We might not set up as congenitally as others but it doesn't make us uncompetitive. Richmond won flags with a pretty minimal midfield set up.
I think Hawthorn is a good comparison. You can't really say they've built their resurgence on a free build of their midfield, courtesy of a bevy of top end draft picks. Moreover it's been some astute drafting across the board and a total buy in by the players to fast ball movement and transition.

Widely thought to be a cellar dweller in 2024, the Hawks became the most attractive team in the comp and if not for their slow start to the season would probably have made it to the GF.

North, despite a plethora of AFL gifted mids, are still no closer to the slingshot up the ladder most have predicted. They still have plenty of non mid issues to fix before they do.

Lyon somehow managed in 2009 to find the necessary fix to our game plan to go 18-0 at the start of the season. Despite adding nobody of note to our 2008 list, which had been beaten twice by 10 goals in the finals by the eventual grand finalists.

Whether he can do that again 15 years on without a quality mid field group is the burning question. The Hawks have shown it can be done and that there's more than one way to skin a cat

They should've dished out a lot more vitriol earlier in their own direction for not placing an Ashcroft bid - shame on North, Adelaide and Carlton for helping the reigning premiers

From what I gather and I don't think they're alone that it reflects poorly on the clubs character and integrity. Arguing semantics all you want but very few would place trust again in someone in their day to day life who went back on their word because it didn't suit them anymore.
I agree. But I am sure behind closed doors there must have been some heart felt conversations

Gaelic is a trip.
I went to Inis Mor, off the coast of Galway where everyone speaks the mother tongue. I had just enough of the language to be able to order a pint, and ask where the toilets are. At one point I found out that I had been calling the barwoman Horse for the entire evening.
I haven't been back 🤦🏼‍♂️

I would like to hear Dalrymple’s insight into each pick. Just hearing from Misson is mind numbing.

The media content has been a bit average. Other clubs do a much better job.
100%

Missons communication is extremely poor

Then one of the excited beggaroo supporters came over here and had a whinge because I called them exactly what they are, an irrelevant bunch of charity cheats looked after by their DEI selection at the AFL who drafted their parasite picks and then when to AFL and approved them.

Then they go and pay pick 25 for Daniel, so have picks 2 and 65, want Tauru but wont take P7 and F1 for P2, but spend their top 5 F1 for some Aldi version of 2 metre Peter.

They could have had 2 F1's and Tauru, but now have zero F1's and a pick 27. An absolute waste of a F1.

And they can't be thinking a high dp for LDU if he goes Band 1 is end of first if they have no F1.

The rank incompetence and abject stupidity is mirrored by their total irrelevance, and parasite culture.

Oh well at least they got Wayne Carey's kid.

Agree. Would be very good to hear him talk about stats and scouting and all the reasons in detail why they selected each pic. To give us an insight.

I think compensation is based on finishing position, not what your picks are after trades.

The AFL determines the compensation pick, and an expert committee can recommend changes if the result is "materially anomalous". The compensation is then awarded based on the team's finishing position

Sent this via PM to a poster whom used to post here but I am still in touch with

Yes, Lyon worked out what he believes is the way to win flags in this era.

He has right from the beginning of this stint talked about run. He would not have taken the team on if the basis of the list was not able to run and have a tank.
The training standards from Ratten to Lyon are remarkable.

Lyon got together what he wanted as assistants, first the feel good factor with Lenny bj and Harvs, however while both bj and Lenny were fairly inexperienced, Harvey had extensive experience. He also retained Corey Enright the only assistant coach to be kept as he could see the quality of the guy.

Now Lenny is part time, bj shipped off to Sandy and Lyon has brought in Rivers and another ex head coach in Bolton.

At the same time he purged list management bringing in SoS, Misson, Dalrymple, getting rid of Gallagher and Toce.

This cleanout has been echo'ed by Bassatt first ruthlessly dumping Ratten, then seeing off both Finnis and Lethlean.

The club off the field has completely changed in just two years and the list has been totally revamped.

Phillipou, Van Es, Hotton, Keeler, Wilson, Collard, Hastie, Garcia, Shoenmaker Travaglia, Tauru, Barrat, BoxShall, Dodson, Said.

Two have already been cut, but the rest (the latest batch I can only go from reports and highlight reels) can run like the wind, can transition, and have excellent foot and hand skills, an absolute minimum for a Lyon trained team in the 6 6 6 and stand era.

Couple that with the likes of Jones, Howard, Webster, Stocker, (Wood?) only getting one year deals, and Cordy's final year, we have extreme pressure on these guys to perform or their careers are over.

The above 12 are in the short term competing for about 6 spots, but all of those draftees are very young with half a dozen still only just 18.
So medium to long term more than 6 may be first 23 starters.

Then we come to the recruits. Dow, Henry, Hall, Macrae, Caroll. Only one not an absolute mid is Henry who can run through the mids.

The big call this draft was mids, mids, mids, which I preferred, but when the top 6 were gone the strategy changed on night one to best available. Night two changed for need and we traded up twice for two more mids.

So say our starting midfield is Steele, Macrae, Clark and Dow. Look above who can run through the mids at any time, there is about 13 others.

Gringo has got it right in my view that a team can't carry too many pure mids in this era and they have to be able to play in a few positions, the Starting four above (Steele, Macrae, Clark and Dow) would be pure mids but apart from them the rest can really play in a number of positions.

The training staff look professional, the recruiting staff have shown since '21 our drafting has been good, our recruiting has been pinpointed for need and I have a feeling we have an LDU or a Callaghan locked in for 2026

The admin has been sorted and training standards are increasingly high. I think the club has gotten things correct off field, so exciting and hopeful times ahead.
Some excellent points here…extremely doubtful Callaghan will leave GWS but we’ll be making very enticing offers to free agents LDU & TDK!!

We should be aiming for finals and if Lyon doesn't make it happen or come close he should be under a lot of pressure. If the next challenge is without our older crew it will be a very long way off. Probably means 2030s before we are top 4 again and that's we can hold the side together.

Took over a side that sat on the fringes of finals and has been given everything we denied our last coaches and have a much better list. If at the end of his third year he hasn't progressed the side he probably needs to go for someone with some more energy and vision.

I like Ross and think he's a well above average coach but that doesn't give him a free pass.

You agree ?

When RTB 1st come back you were telling anyone that would listen he would have us as serious contenders next year
I also said he would give us a categoric answer on our list that you both felt was good enough to go to that next step.

I still think he would have us serious contenders but he has chosen to move half the list on in his time whilst achieving a finals campaign and an 11 win season.

It’s been a Big turnover.

We start round 1 with 15 listed players who either haven’t debuted or are below 10 AFL games

20 below 50 games

26 below 70 games

I think he is 1 more trade/draft/free agency period from having this list in that sweet spot - both from a talent/need perspective and experience.

Hopefully he can do it getting us playing finals. I think it will be a big coaching effort with a list this young.
