Trading Mitch Lewis for magic beans is far more of a gamble than rolling the dice on getting his body right.
A fully fit Mitchell Lewis is top 3-5 KPF in the league IMO.
I saw his potential from his early games and have been patiently waiting for him to put it together over a season.
Sadly, 7 years into his career and we are still waiting for that consistency.
It's either his body, or our medical team, but there's a problem here.

I think we have fallen into the trap of playing him too high up the ground because of his enormous running capacity.
His highest impact quality is his contested marking.
It is ELITE, and also how he makes the biggest impact on the game bc it results in goals.

But the question has to be asked: do we cash out while we can, or continue to hope for better?

8 weeks ago I said Dear/Chol's form in the seniors would help decide that.
I think they have banked some good results.
If Scaife plays a promising 3-4 matches as well, I'd be firmly in the camp pushing for a Lewis trade if we could get a good enough offer.

Right now, I'm still leaning towards keeping him unless the offer was huge.
But to dismiss the trade entirely is irresponsible IMO.

Regarding Lewis:

I agree with most posters, in that a fit Lewis is worth more to us than speculative draft picks. So I don't think we would consider "cashing him in"

The tricky part is not about the trade offer coming our way - it's going to be the years + $'s another club puts in front of Lewis himself. Our biggest worry is that he will have his head turned and request a trade.

I mentioned this in an earlier post but for an injury prone player like Lewis, a long term deal with big $'s would be very tempting. Remains to be seen if such an offer is forthcoming.

If a club did offer those terms then any argument of his injury diminishing his value goes out the window, and I'd be expecting 2x firsts.

Maybe it’s in the AFL’s interest to buy a property or 2 for assistants to live in.
It’s got to be a better investment than just paying an extra 9.8% each year ($712,950) towards their soft cap.

5 yrs of an extra 9.8% would be approx 2 houses in Syd at the average house price.
Also an asset for the AFL.
$170k is a nice salary.

Why don't the $wans purchase properties and allow their assistant coaches live in them rent free.
Probably need some supporters to have a property they don't need for awhile so get someone to house sit for a few years and look after the cat, and as you happen to know the assistant coach is of good character...

Don’t get this talk of potentially trading Lewis given the setbacks he is experiencing. Remember during preseason and he was in the rehab group and talking to him on the other side of the ground with no one around (while he was jogging) he was so so frustrated …… imagine him today! We need to stick by him he is through and through Hawthorn start turning your back on players experiencing some setbacks in life worst thing for a clubs culture!

Mitch averages 9 games per season over his career and 1.8 goals per game over that time.

I highly doubt any teams are coming at Hawthorn with a mouth watering deal for us to consider.

He will stay with us.
Hardwick will stay with us.

Nash for me is the one that may get a big offer from another team that he may have to cash in on at his age.

Yeah no one is coming in with a huge trade offer for Lewis. I think Melbourne are wanting to turn his head so that he pushes for a move himself. Either way we would simply never get a fair deal for him.

The club should do all it can to keep him and get him right. Look at Curnow right now, his career was teetering on the edge, but now he's in career best form and Carlton will be getting five or six years of elite KPF football out of him. That's all we need too.

I wonder who would pursue Nash? I'm guessing maybe Geelong would throw their hat into the ring.

Someone on the Geelong board mentioned they've heard they're interested in Nash.

I reckon a team will throw 600 a year at Nashy X 4 or 5 years which will be very tempting.

Would you offer our first and future first for Max King from the saints if he wanted out?

Talents being wasted by Ross's slow ball movement.
I wouldn’t.

I know we want a star forward, but so much of today’s footy is won by teams with very strong midfields and serviceable talls up forward. That’s why I advocate that if Baz wants in you get it done.

The need for speed and class in the middle surpasses the requirement to throw picks at someone like King for mine, and particularly when Dear has come on like he has and we still have McCabe to debut.

Makes sense

Of all the players on the list I feel like Nash would have the strongest sense of loyalty to Mitchell and the club.

Not that I think we'd short change him or anything. But if a slightly bigger offer comes in then I still think he'd stay.

Baz is the missing link to our midfield.

We would have our big brute in Newk, class in Day and speed in Baz.

Worps, Nash, Ward, Frenchy and Moore to roll through.

The obvious issue (a good one, mind) is how would they all fit into the midfield rotation? They need secondary positions that they can really contribute in when they're not playing through the middle.

Moore is an AA calibre HFF and Smith can play off a HFF and a wing. There are no issues there.

Mackenzie has also shown he can be damaging playing as a HFF. He doesn't really need to get big numbers to have an impact at all, given how good he is by foot.

Obviously Day can play in the backline, but I think we are well stocked there and his skills and size and marking ability could make him a dangerous leading forward.

Newcombe can clunk a mark and is strong as a bull. I believe he could hit the scoreboard when resting deep forward and would surely be able to out muscle any smaller defenders.

Nash and Worpel are the two players that don't really have another role to lean on at this stage.

IMO Newcombe and Day are our best midfielders and they should be around the ball as much as possible.

On a side note I wonder if sides will (again, Geelong) sniff around Hustwaite at the end of the season.

Hardwick will stay with us.

Happy Antonio Banderas GIF

Not very enticing at all. It is close enough to what he would be earning at Hawthorn. Why would he even consider it? cant see it myself

Sydney are by far the best club in it at the moment with two talls of McDonald and Amartey. Don't get me wrong they're both good players but they're averaging less than 2 goals a game each, depending on where we'd finish I'd much rather use those picks on Baz.
