I’d do the Lewis trade every day of the week and the next if it’s a top 12 pick and some change

It take value to get value club will need to make some hard decisions

That's not really how you 'list manage' though. It's more than just high end picks. It requires list balance.

We've now had a 2 week sample size of Chol and Ramsden as the two key forwards. They've combined for 2 goals out of 19.

We have ZERO other genuine key forwards coming through.

It's absolute lunacy to consider trading Lewis for a 'top 12 pick'.

If that top 12 pick ends up being a midfielder or a defender what good has it actually done the make-up of our list?

If you want evidence of how silly the concept is, please look at North Melbourne's past 4 years of trading and drafting.

Gary Lyon had an interesting take on us tonight. Shows just how hard it is to rebuild currently.

AFL needs to make serious changes to its draft system, in regards to FS and academies. It's hard to not be bitter on the concessions given to Gold coast and how that will continue.

Just have to nail a key back and another key forward. I'm confident the midfield situation will resolve itself. Day and Newcombe are too good to let us be poor all year round. Expect Sam to be more involved in the contest work in the next few weeks.

I'm not sure people are fully grasping how far behind we are of having a sustainable list challenging for flags - that's what it's all about. times have changed.

the talk (last year?) of having most of the next flag already in the room was a bizarre comment. even for a superstar & good judge like Sam it's just far too early to tell.

the afl hasn't been a level playing field for years & never will be again. I was against handouts but fk it - ill take em because one first a year ain't moving the needle.

The talk of trading Lewis is madness when we’ve quite literally been linked to every out of contract tall forward all through the media for last 18 months because we “want a key forward to pair with Lewis”.

Stop it.

Can I please ask you a question were you for or against the Trent Croad trade to Fremantle as its trading away our youth for more unknown youth.

Sam is being positive. That's his job, to raise support and interest in the direction he is taking us.

Reckon fair bit of the team is with us already though. Day, Newk, Watto, Weddle, Moore, CJ, Mitchell, Meek, Lewis, Ginni, Worpel, Hardwick, Sicily, Mass, Scrimshaw I reckon will all be part of it. Really need Ward, Frenchie and McDonald to rise in the next 2-3 years if we want to make it.

I honestly can’t even remember, but the bigger question is can we wait 7-8 years for whatever we get from a Lewis trade to mature.

The answer is no.

Trading away a tall, in the hope we get another one is dumb.

The interesting thing with pick purchasing which absolutely should be in already is who would this year? Gold Coast probably give they have dogs first and one of the shinbeggars picks plus their own r1/2 and the lions given Levi Ashcroft F/S. that is exactly what we need and stops these discussions re moving on players (me included re Sicily) because we have so few palatable levers to pull to improve our draft hand. Our r1 dogs r1 lions r1 maybe suns r2 from north and pies r2 that we hold would be a great hand to take in. But it’s the AFL they like to have the power to arbitrarily hand out picks on a whim like the porridge server in Oliver.

Would you be willing to let Blake Hardwick walk if his new contract gave us a pick after our first?

Wasn’t pick purchasing just a whacky idea from Cal Twomey? I don’t get why it gets mentioned in this thread over and over.

Yes I would
Not a KPP, but as good as he is, he isn’t getting an offer to trigger this sort of compo
Agree BUT this might be the AFLs way of applying some 'secret herbs and spices' to give us a leg up.

That was at a time when drafting/trade was pretty new and clubs had only really started investing heavily in it.

No way a club ( in Freo position ) does that trade now. They were a rabble .

Its also way to early to say that he isnt correct .

There are too many onfield players and the draft is too compromised to allow a bottom list to rebound quickly .

FA is an issue. In other sports the team with the 'salary cap' space will normally get the FA . Ours mostly head to a contendar .
IF they do go a contendar in other sports, that team nornally needs to off load the equivalent player value. So the rebuild team still gets benefit . Not in AFL.

I agree with the poster who says we should throw godfather offers at JUH and Smith .
Our cap space is our 1 wood .
Rebuilding quickly via compromised draft simple wont happen.

Base is there , we need to get aggressive/creative beyond the draft and we can accelerate this .

We need KPP who can play every week. Having the best player in the comp for 13 or 14 games a year vs a very good player 23 games a year I take the latter.

Sure, but even if we got a first rounder for Lewis - there’s absolutely zero guarantee there’d be a good KPP available at that pick - even if there was it would be a good 3-4 years until an 18 year old KPP would be able to have the impact Lewis can have when not in a slump.

Let's say JUH decides to take up our $10m offer. Then what. How do you trade for him? They'd want 3 firsts.
It's not worth it.

Keep your picks and target FAs.

People thinking we have any shot at landing JUH is going to mean some very funny melts come end of trade period this year.

And often what you surround them with, which is why I find the “let’s trade for draft picks and get more kid” such a falsehood.
Yep, when we traded out guys to rebuild 1 guy was looking around himself and had the most currency on our list. But we kept him, and fought to keep him. And Sam Mitchell followed him around everywhere learning off him. Ran extra laps with him after training, did extra work in the gym with him.

If we traded Crawford out, the entire Clarkson era would have been a failure. Heck even having someone like Everett in the ruck giving our young mids silver service was great for their development even though they took time to stop hacking it forward and it took time for our forwards to arrive and develop.

I would make it so the clubs own the players for the first 6-8 years and can then trade them to any club like in the US.
After that period the player becomes a free agent. No compo.

This would mean you could get rid of the academy, compo and father son picks as teams would be able to trade them for the best offer.

If Gws or GC draft a Vic player and after 3 years they offer him a 5 year contract. If the player says no they can trade him for picks or players to any club/state.

You would have to increase the players salaries but this would allow teams to retain players and move up the ladder quicker.

Players have to much power. Especially after only 1-2 years in the system.
