The mixed feelings are what creates the grey. Just because it's clear for you, doesn't mean it's not a complex decision for him. That's the "so what".
I'm sure it is a complex decision for him. I never said otherwise. It would be, with pros and cons to both staying and leaving

It seems as if he was happy with our offer (FWIW, I'm sure he still is)

Now he's got some feedback that the Saints aren't.

Ok, so what?

He has to make a decision, like everyone in life, where there are complexities.

You can't have it all when balancing your own needs, and those around you.

He needs to make a decision, (and TBH, I'm sure he has, and this is just a strategy that the Saints are either putting out there, with or without Battle's complicity to get what THEY want.)

I'm sure the Saints would be happier with pick 7 than 19...but that's the 'so what?'

If that really is a deal-breaker for him, that the Saints aren't as happy as they possibly could be, he needs to weigh that up in the list of factors as they are, and make the decision.

Agree with most of this. Far more complex than what you laid out in your original post.

This is why it's being reported he genuinely hasn't made a decision yet.

In a way, this is Cogs revisited again.

It could go either way. Don't be surprised if he stays.

If he stays, he stays. So be it.

Wake me when it's over.

If I posted my complete thought processes, rather than just my conclusions, no-one would bother reading. :p

So seriously on Ward where does he fit? Day Newk Worpel are first 3, Nash Mackenzie McDonald would seem next 3 with Moore Weddle Watson the chop outs. Wings seem to be CJ and D’Ambrosio with Weddle and Amon the covers.
We have to be realistic and also focus on how to improve the list balance. What are our gaps? KPF seems like #1 3rd forward seems like #2 think we are set for small forwards and defenders. If players like Ward Maginness Serong allow us to acquire those positions you have to consider it at a minimum. This draft has several promising forwards that go between 10-40 getting 2 with second rounders seems to make sense.
Players like Shanahan Sims Faull Gerryn would fit the bill nicely.

Guess if one has to google meaning of ITK they are instantly disqualified from participating
I would consider myself to have NFI what was going on inside the club.

Where someone who was ITK would

Exactly. Last year McKay picked Essendon, we just rolled on with getting our other 3 deals done and ended up with 3 best 22 players out of the trade period and a better defender in Barrass nominating us 12 months later. Life goes on.

I hope you guys are right. If Barrass and Battle both join us, then I'd like to see DGB spend the pre-season training as a forward.
I have my reservations on Denver watching him at Box Hill, but if he is getting another contract and Barrass joins I’d like to see him spend every training session as Barrass shadow.

Your starting 22 might only include 6 mids.

It would be folly to then only have 6 decent mids on your list of 42.

You would want at least 8 of similar ability competing for the starting 6. Then, a couple more youngsters coming through after that.

That is where Ward fits.

Yep I get the strong feeling that we are aiming to land one of either Barrass or Battle here and not both after all.
I highly doubt we’re going to make a pitch and offers to both players and then when they both agree to come say to one of them nah we only wanted one of the two of you.

Depends on how you view Hustwaite Maginness they are the depth if he goes that’s the 8. The starting 22 should only include 6 mids in my view maximum 3 start 3 rotate and some chop out like I said. Ward will be a serviceable footballer but if he’s 7th in and we can get him somewhere that he becomes a starting mid and that gives us access to a player of greater need that’s the art of list management isn’t it?

Not necessarily having a go at you...but the statement in bold is one of the more ludicrous things I've read, when the only only way the "saints get looked after" is by...giving Josh Battle more money!!!

He's either happy with the offer, or he's not, and his feelings for the Saint means that he stays. Up to him.

His desire for their welfare without him don't amount to a hill of beans.
The term coin grabber should be reserved for those that start talks with other clubs just to up their salary at their present club (or a third that they are secretly going to - Lynch)

I don't think Battle is doing that here, nor is TD implying this. (I also don't think you are insinuating that he is implying this.) Just here to point out how I see the term coin grabber in an AFL context.

The thing is, an extra $50 k on $850k a year is meaningless after tax. There doesn’t seem any meaningful incentive there.

As ridiculous as what’s been suggested about wanting to help out the incumbents, it’s consistent with what’s been said for some time now.
An extra 50k a year is meaningless? 🤣

I have no idea why the notion of Battle wanting the "Saints to be happy" involves "shades of grey", when the upshot is 'give me more money'

I'm sure Battle may well have mixed feelings....I'm sure he does...so what?

There are no shades of grey to my belief that "we need to make the Saints happy" is a ridiculous justification for raising our offer.

If he want the Saint to be happy...stay with them
I truly understand the emotions, I truly do. But it is a profession, like any IT expert, Lawyer, Ad' Exec etc, being poached.
"I like where I work and and love the people" but what is the best thing for MY priorities, Family and Career ! You make the decision based on that. He will and we will find out soon enough.

So if Battle says I'm coming we pull the pin on Barrass?
I doubt Barrass would make a request to be traded at his exit interview if we hadn't already given assurances we wanted him regardless of other outcomes.

Also I recall a little while ago in this thread it was mentioned that both players (Barrass/Battle) are aware the club was looking to bring both players in so I assume we had spoken to them about how they will fit in the team together.

Josh Battle reminds me of that song by The Clash "Should i stay or should i go"

I will make it slightly easier for you Josh...

Club A - walk into the club Monday morning and look at a single Premiership Cup

or

Club B - walk into the club Monday morning and look at Thirteen Premiership Cups and space for more

Choose wisely...

Yes. If 5% is the reason you choose one club over another at that level of salary, of course it is.

It's about $25k after tax.
That's not a meaningless amount of money when most of your earning potential is condensed into a 10-15 year period.

What do ppl think about trading DGB plus our 1st and 2nd rounder for Barass and West Coasts 2nd rounder?
We have Collingwoods 2nd so that would mean a 6 pick slide? What does the value Denver at in the points system? I don't mind it on face value. Means we'd have our future 2nd next year if we drop a bit after this year (like Freo did).

I don't know if West Coast would do it though.

Added a little more for further clarification....
