I got torched around here a few years ago for not buying into the cliff is coming narrative. As long as they keep doing this sort of thing, in a very even competition, they unfortunately will still be there abouts.

Add in Reid in a year or 2 and the cycle continues.

Earlier this year I was optimistic the cliff was finally here - the losing streak after the 7-0 start looked very ominous.

But the strong late season form and finals wasn't driven by the same old faces - Hawkins didn't play, Stewart's influence was very reduced, even danger was in and out of games.

They have some good youth plus some hardened and experienced bodies. I can see Smith as a pure dynamic mid & A grade Oliver would be a great addition. Unfortunately they arent going anywhere.

If they had valued him at the start of the contract negotiations they may never of lost him.

I don’t see how the Cats have the draft capital (or players) to get Oliver and Smith.

You wouldn't have to give up much for Oliver. He's banged up, overweight, questionable off field activities, has an attitude problem and comes with a one million per season price tag for six more years.

Of course he could turn it all around and become the gun player he use to be. He's incredible when he's on.

Feel like Geelong is testing the concept of the Ship of Theseus

In the need to replace their ageing champions, many of which are just genuinely good blokes - with a constant supply of players with questionable attitudes - do they eventually hit a tipping point, where their culture just sinks.

Scott seems to be amazing at bringing players back to their best and focusing them, but just like in any workplace, if you pollute the pool enough, it just becomes a swamp.

Adding Clarry and Baz, with clear question marks on their approach to certain things, just feels like it tips the weights even further.

HAVING ruffled plenty of feathers by defecting to the Sydney Swans just a couple of days after helping Hawthorn secure its 11th premiership, Lance Franklin chose to miss the Hawks' best and fairest function at Melbourne's Crown Casino on Saturday night.

After congratulating retiring defender Brent Guerra on a great career, Newbold said, "I also want to wish Lance Franklin all the best in the future and thank him for his contribution to Hawthorn over nine years."

The neutral observers in the room waited for a round of booing to break out.

It's on Saturday and FA opens 9AM friday, so he will officially be a Hawthorn player by then.

We should bring him up and present him his 3rd place at StKilda award. Thank him for his dedication undertaking his apprenticeship at Stkilda and congratulate him on graduating to a real club.

Yes gun players but Oliver has the maturity of a 13 yo and Smith's major issue with Beveridge was not being played where he wanted.
Not sure Scott will be too accommodating of that if the performance isn't there.

They'll also need to add to their squad of player minders out and about .

And we don't need Geelong to fall off a cliff , we just need to be better then them. We should be confident that part is coming .

Yeah, I should caveat it and say that I don't seen them as a dominant force like times of old. I think we'll have them covered next year. They still have strong vulnerabilities, even if they pull these trades off. But with their home ground advantage, Chris Scott at the helm and their continued development of talent, I think they'll continue to be there abouts. Given how even the comp is, that might be all they need.

Yeah I'm not sure that Oliver moving to Shepparton by the Sea is great for him personally but we know that the Cats are good at sweeping that stuff under the carpet.

Oliver is 2 years removed from being a top player in the comp and is owed $1.1M+ a year out to 2030.

I don't know what Melbourne will or won't do, but there's a good chance that a lot of teams - like Richmond - will see lots of opportunity in taking advantage of a strong draft shortly before Tassie is introduced.

Yep, has cleared Stkilda from his thoughts so I don't really think he's overly pissed with not getting an invite. It reaffirms to himself he made the right decision as good clubs don't carry on like sooky children when they don't get there way.

Same, people have carried on about the cliff for years. And year after year they somehow remain competitive.

For the first time I actually allowed myself to believe the cliff had arrived during their patch in the middle of the year, but they turned it around, again.

It's best to not bring the cliff is coming unless there's genuine evidence it actually is from now on. In my mind they will play finals every year or thereabouts so that way I'm not surprised how they are tracking or disappointed.
