Keen to hear the thoughts from people that watched Sanfl closely this year if Toby Murray could be developed into our next ruck?

After having a chat to my mate in recruiting who scouted Murray for the MSD, he sees him as a potential number one ruck at AFL level. Also said this isn’t a great ruck draft after Dodson (Sydney very keen on him) and that Murray would be better than anyone else after Dodson in this draft pool.
if sydney keen then green must be a dud

Thanks for sharing the insight mate - always great hearing insiders viewpoints. Any other thoughts/comments from your mate re the Crows youngsters we have brought in in recent years?

Just a cursory glance of current ruckmens heights and 200cm is a significant outlier to the downside. Many (most?) 205-210cm these days. Hopefully good leap and a “Scorpus neck”

I call bullshit!!

Logan Smith will go quite high as well and I watched a lot of Toby Murray, live in person and on live streams.
he's a forward that can chop out in the ruck and that's where he's played all his football for the Murray Bushrangers and that's where he'll play at AFL level if he makes it.

I advocated he was worth a rookie spot years before he joined us btw.

Toby is a very interesting watch over the pre season.

Could be anything.
Have you seen much of his work in the SANFL? Rate him potentially highly?

PS besides my private apology via message last week after making some totally inappropriate accusations when you joined the board, I also wanted to add we have had some excellent - smart, knowledgeable, insightful - new posters joining in recent mths including Shiftycrow, Thrillthorpe and yourself

You call BS that he has a mate who is in recruitment? Just not sure why someone would make that up?

Seems pretty random he would esp when the rest of their postings have been consistently quality

Thrillthorpe is not new, it’s BACCS

You do realise this poster is well known on here before he decided to cancel his previous account...didn't take long for his return

On another cursory glance, Meek, Xerri, Briggs (all well regarded) all sub 205.
How many are 200cm? The 2 core points of substance are:

  • 200 cm is an outlier to the downside
  • many (most) ruck are 205-210cm these days

Do you actually disagree with either of these points?

Sorry badly worded upon rereading your post. Yes some good ruckman below 205 but 200cm does seem very short

Ahh, ok thanks
Better than this year's "öther" ruck draft prospect? Not by me he's not.

That bloke he's seen contesting with in the ruck last year Will Green went to Sydney with a 1st round pick in the 2023 draft.

ANOTHER GIANTS BIG MAN ON THE WAY?

GREATER Western Sydney Academy prospect Logan Smith is shaping as one of the first northern Academy players picked in this year's draft after a dominant start to the season.

The 204cm ruckman is a member of the Giants Academy and this week was selected in the Allies squad for the mid-year under-18 championships.

His form for the Giants in their Coates Talent League performances stood out to rival recruiters, with Smith playing three games and averaging 18 disposals and 27 hitouts.

His best performance came in round six against the Murray Bushrangers, when he had 24 disposals, eight clearances and 22 hitouts.

The Giants will get first access to him through their Academy but his progress is seeing clubs view him as one of the best ruckmen in the draft pool.

Greater Western Sydney has had success from its Academy with a run of ruckmen, including current No.1 big man Kieren Briggs and developing talent Nick Madden, who recently re-signed for two more years but has strung together a run of impressive VFL form. – Callum Twomey

Yes got it, thanks Bicks. and genuinely love the updates on young draftee prospects etc

So you weren’t calling BS on the other posters sources? More that your talent judgement disagrees?

I try my best.

I think his ruck craft needs a bit of work but the scope is there. He's a bit of an angry bugger, moves well.

IMO he's not a number 1 ruck by any means, people may disagree.

All I'll say if his source doesn't rate Logan Smith a better lead ruck prospect than Toby Murray then I question his sources ratings. Logan Smith was the other ruck to make the U18's AA team this year.

Key forward and chop out ruckman? Replacing Berg, hopefully at a superior level

Why didn’t Toby get drafted in the main draft?
Too raw?
Exactly.

Passed over twice both draft years as a top ager and a overager for the Bushies and the Allies but you could always see had the potential, just took our guys a bit long to recognise it.

I've seen a bit of him. To me, his problem is consistency (tank?).
On the one hand, I've seen him completely dominating periods of play, throwing himself about, skillful and ultra-competitive, then long periods of nothing with a bit of tentativeness thrown in. The first needs to increase, the second to disappear. Then, he could be anything.

Possible list changes...

Ins:
(T Murray)
Cumming
ANB
Pick #4
Next pick
Welsh

Outs:
Sloane
McHenry
Parnell
Burgess
Gollant (should be Strachan)
Hamill (should be Smith!)

In a perfect world, delist Strachan, trade out Gollant & trade in another ruckman.

In time absolutely.

Depends on which way we go with forward structure in the Post-Tex world.
I think the possibility Himmelberg was leaving is what probably led to us giving Toby a tryout before giving him the rookie spot especially when he put 18 months as a condition of getting taken in the MSD. That would likely have put a lot of clubs off methinks.

Looks right to me. And all this chat about pick 25 for ANB I am not sure I believe. Seems overs. If anything, F2 and even that with something coming back.

The stupid media using we got pick 25 for McAdam without broader context. It was forecast to be more like 35 it’s just that Dees tanked way more than we both thought. So we effectively traded McAdam for what we assumed was a pick in the 30’s. I am not paying pick 25 in a strong draft year on a 29 yo

Well it’s not bs, it’s just the opinion of someone that works in recruiting and scouted him heavily for the MSD. I’ve only ever seen him as a forward for us, which is why I asked the question.
