Assuming the trades go through as announced, our changes will be as follows:
IN: ANB, Cumming, Peatling, Turray (R)
OUT: Sloane, McHenry, Gollant, Himmelberg, Hamill (R), Parnell (R)

That leaves us with 1 senior list & 1 rookie list vacancy. We need to make a minimum of 3x selections in the ND, less any rookie upgrades.

At this point our options are:
  • Demote 2 players from senior list to rookie list, upgrade 1 rookie (Keane), make 2 selections in the ND.
  • Delist Burgess, demote 1 player from senior list to rookie list, make 3 selections in the ND.
  • Delist Burgess, demote 2 players from senior list to rookie list, upgrade 1 rookie (Keane), make 3 selections in the ND.
If we want any additional list vacancies - either for trading or drafting, then we would need to delist/trade a contracted player. This appears to be an unlikely outcome in 2024, unless we can talk Brodie Smith into retiring (unlikely, but possible).
I think the Crows have a plan. To bring in 4. I saw Smith as unsigned. We trade in ANB and Peatling. Leaves us 2 at National Draft. We do not have to upgrade any rookies if we don't sign Smith until after Nat draft and leave 3rd pick vacant. Then sign Smith as Rookie. Smith draft pick can be used if needed for Welsh and pass later.

There are several problems here...

Firstly, we're unlikely to be taking 4 players in the ND. Our 4th pick would likely be in the 70+ range, and they're unlikely to want to do that.

Secondly, it's almost certain that Smith is contracted - having reached his contract trigger earlier this season.

Thirdly, if we haven't signed him by 31st October (when all AFL contracts expire), he automatically becomes a UFA. We can't simply wait indefinitely, before signing him to a rookie contract.

Fourthly, moving him to the rookie list doesn't create a 4th vacancy on the senior list. We currently have 1 vacancy on the senior list, and 1 vacancy on the rookie list. Moving Smith to the rookie list still leaves us with only 2 vacancies, albeit both being on the senior list.

The only way to generate a 4th ND selection (which the club wouldn't want to do anyway) is to delist 2 players completely.

Query - do we now trade our 2025 first rounder for something good out there? Any pre-agents gettable? LDU?
We really don't have any list positions available for trading in any additional players this year.

I wouldn't be overly surprised to see us trade our F1, to get us another pick in the 1st round of this year's draft. It could be used as part of the Peatling trade, with a 2024 1st coming back from GWS - but it won't be used to get another player beyond those already announced.

Adam Kelly:

Pick 25 for ANB? "I think it would be fair to say that that will be part of any deal that we do."

Expect to lose/trade anyone? "We don't but ... who knows what happens during trade period."

Any other trade targets: "As we stand here today, the players that we've targeted are the ones we've spoken about (Cumming, Peatling, ANB) but what happens in the next week or two, who would know."

Changes to coaching dept or footy dept due to Murray Davis arrival? "The one thing we have to acknowledge is that as soon as you make a call to bring in someone of that seniority in what is a totally constrained soft cap environment, that has the potential to have a squeeze somewhere else. We're still working through that. It's only been this week that we've been able to secure Murray so we still have to work through that."

Graham Wright? "Given Graham's experience and successes in the game he is one of the most respected football administrators and for very good reason. And given that, there'd be a lot of organisations exploring the opportunity of having Graham join them. So I don't know what the likelihood would be but I know it would be pretty competitive as far as trying to attract his services."

Sid Draper
"Early days there may have been some conversations more with this management. What happens across the year, and particularly this time of the year, there's a lot of misinformation. We're quite pleased to see Sid come out and set that straight."

Peatling: "We love his competitiveness and we love the speed that he brings in, his agility. He stood up in some finals as well. He's someone who's on a really strong trajectory now that he's been given opportunity and we see that with even more opportunity with us, that he can take his game to another level."

Keeping pick 4: "What has been important to us is protecting pick four ... we've got a lot of confidence in this year's draft and especially at that pointy end of the draft so that's been pleasing that we haven't had to part with that as a part of the negotiations."

' Burnsy we want you to coach SANFL or the midfield'

VB ' hey wait a minute'

' Scott we have got this bloke in and fair to say we struggled with the connection between the midfield and forwards - which is your role - so we're moving you on for Murray who also comes in as senior assistant '

Peatling choosing us changes things from what I thought our strategy was. I don't see how we get Peatling and ANB to the club without dipping into our future picks

I think that makes it hard to get a pick for Dodson.

We will almost certainly need to dip into our future picks, given that both Peatling & ANB are apparently valued as 2nd round picks.

It's quite conceivable that we could trade our F1 for Peatling + a 2024 1st (or some similar variation), using the 2024 1st on Dodson.

"The sky is falling! We are all doomed" is the default position of the "others" (you know who you are). ;)

Some posters use more than a good week in the off-season to determine their view of the likelihood of success. Cumming is a very good FA acquisition, Peatling choosing us is awesome and ANB will definitely make us better. But structural weaknesses that have resulted in our inability to compete at the pointy end for more than the odd spike year for more than a decade remain. We can hope that player acquisitions will turn it around, but there's just too much evidence that we'll just waste the talent. Until it's seen that we're making all the right decisions that need to be made (delisting Smith or not getting him to a trigger) and we've got some actual runs on the board over an entire season (not cherry picking 5 outcomes to override 23), then it's perfectly normal and appropriate to not have a changed view due to recent events.

In:
Peatling
ANB
Cumming
#4
Welsh

Out:
Sloane
Himmelberg
McHenry
Gollant
Burgess?

I'd like to make another live pick in what's a strong draft, so maybe we'll move a couple to the rookie list to replace Parnell and Hamill (two of Schoenberg, Strachan and Smith would be my guess).

Don't we need to have one more out than in due to Toby Murray already replacing Sloane? And apologies if this has already been ask/answered 100 times, I got behind in this thread and skipped a bit.

Murray picked in the midseason rookie draft

So could think of him replacing Parnell or Hamill

We also need to get enough later picks to pay for Welsh, should we get a nasty early bid for him from Sydney.
Of course, he might slip so far that we get him for nothing as a rookie.

We don't want to be embarrassed by poor bookkeeping.

How are we going to get later picks unless we're pushing out contracted players for picks? If a nasty early bid comes for Welsh, then I expect he'll be going to that club. Unless we can swap F3 or F2 in to picks. What would be the point in having draft picks there just in case a bid that doesn't come, they'll just become worthless as we don't have the list spots to select anyone with.

Okay, with us securing Peatling's nomination, I am now firmly of the belief Burgess is not contracted, or is being delisted whilst contracted. It makes the most sense with the list maths at our disposal.

If he is:

Out: --> In:
Sloane --> ANB
Himmelberg --> Cumming
McHenry --> Peatling
Gollant -->Pick 4
Burgess -->Welsh

Hamill-->Turray
Parnell--> Open Rookie spot

For us to get our 3 draft picks, we demote a senior player to the rookie list. Or upgrade Keane and have a spot open in the rookie draft as well as a re-rookie of a senior list player.

If Burgess is contracted, the Keane move makes the most sense, and a delist/re-rookie, which means no rookie draft spot.

If Berg is going, then I reckon they'd be wanting to keep Burgess as injury cover and try and push a contracted mid out or maybe finally force Smith's retirement.

or
ANB for 25 and a third back
Peatling for F2

Our F1 for Pick 17 and Sydneys F1. Unfortunately 17 still might not get dodson given how much it will slide.
assuming we manufacture list spots

prefer your trade but dont think gws would do that in case we finish above them

they realised pretty quickly they had a lemon

didnt get a game when a second ruck was badly needed and preferred EH so i would be suprised if they dont delist him still
