List Mgmt. 2024 List Mismanagement and Trading Part 2

There has to be players getting demoted to the rookie list or a player getting traded.
Smith, Strachan and Schoenberg obvious options. There'd be no interest across the comp for any of them so could delist comfortably.
I'd say that 1 player being demoted is almost certain, with 2 (and Keane getting upgraded) a possibility.

The chances of Smith, Strachan or Schoenberg being delisted (and not re-drafted in the RD) are vanishingly remote.

Note that my previous post, which you quoted, is clearly marked as "confirmed (papers lodged)" list changes. I haven't included ANB & Peatling, who have nominated the AFC, but whose trade papers have not yet been lodged. Nor have I speculated on which player(s) may be demoted to the rookie list. It is confirmed changes only.

Okay, with these delistings, we now officially have 4 list spots on the senior list and 1 rookie spot.

We now either need 2 players demoted to the rookie list (and Keane upgraded), Burgess is the final delisting, or a contracted player is being traded.
Burgess has always had a deal for 2025. Unless they decide to pay him out early - but I doubt it with Himmelberg now gone.

Likely to be true, but unverified.

The problem is that Burgess is so bad that he doesn't offer depth in any position. Thus even the departure of Himmelberg shouldn't make any difference to his fate.

Gut feel is Burgess has a contract. We’ll need him as a ‘break glass’ option now, anyway (Turray + Welsh effectively replace EH + Gollant)
The problem is that he's so bad that you'd want the entire building to be ablaze, beyond any chance of putting out the fire, before you'd even consider "breaking the glass".

He'll be there purely as a SANFL forward, which considering the depth we have there isnt a bad idea. Gives Welsh another year of being 2n/3rd banana

True, but with minimum 3 draft night changes going to be interesting what we do.
Maybe Smith and Schoenberg down, Pick 12/Keane/16 is the last unknown.
Assuming the trades go through as announced, our changes will be as follows:
IN: ANB, Cumming, Peatling, Turray (R)
OUT: Sloane, McHenry, Gollant, Himmelberg, Hamill (R), Parnell (R)

That leaves us with 1 senior list & 1 rookie list vacancy. We need to make a minimum of 3x selections in the ND, less any rookie upgrades.

At this point our options are:
  • Demote 2 players from senior list to rookie list, upgrade 1 rookie (Keane), make 2 selections in the ND.
  • Delist Burgess, demote 1 player from senior list to rookie list, make 3 selections in the ND.
  • Delist Burgess, demote 2 players from senior list to rookie list, upgrade 1 rookie (Keane), make 3 selections in the ND.
If we want any additional list vacancies - either for trading or drafting, then we would need to delist/trade a contracted player. This appears to be an unlikely outcome in 2024, unless we can talk Brodie Smith into retiring (unlikely, but possible).

I wouldn't be against us delisting him, and signing him as a SANFL player. I don't see any future for him at AFL level, not even as a "break glass in emergency" depth player.

I reckon he'd head back to Westies should we delist him.

Would've preferred Smith to go before Hamill. I think he should've stayed as he was very good in a few of our wins, and would be very handy against the likes of Hawthorn who have fleet-footed forwards. Laird's another who should've gone IMHO as he now just panics when he has the ball, and with Peatling and Cumming now in, I don't see how we can play him in the seniors.

Many list decision simply come down to who is out of contract in any given year.

Laird has 2 years left to run on a fairly lucrative contract. There's zero chance of him being traded, let alone delisted. Delisting him would require us fitting his 2025 & 2026 salaries in our 2024 salary cap, which is just not feasible.

Smith (reportedly) reached his contract trigger, and is/was thus contracted for 2025.

Hamill was out of contract, and out of the senior team for most of the year. Delisting him was an obvious decision, regardless of any concussion considerations.

I don't disagree that these players potentially offer less than Hamill, but delisting Hamill was a fairly easy decision for the list management committee to make.
