Personally I would have delisted Smith (cooked), along with Burgess & Strachan who are not AFL standard.

Schoenberg has played some decent AFL football, but next year last chance saloon.

The selection committee will always pick the best available players to fit their agenda. At no stage will they say, dont pick Smith, we will be stuck with him next year. Ridiculous notion.

Chatting to a Crows mate today - we both agreed, can't remember that last time we have traded a player away and got genuine overs for them. Like proper 'made out like bandits' overs....

we always seem to pay fair premium market rates for players but just cant seem to get lucky with a trade our way or the BS 'Band 1' compo crap the VFL dishes up.

We will likely be looking to go after free agents and trade guys in again. We need to address our ruck issues so maybe that will happen next year. Draper from Essendon is a free agent next year and we have been linked with him.

We can also use future picks to trade back into 2025 2nd round.

We should have gone hard at a young back up this year that was capable of playing if required. We continue to ignore our ruck department every year.

Fair - Cameron turned into Fogarty which I'd say is about par - definitely not 'overs'.

Can't remember what exactly we got for McGovern.

From the Lever deal yes on paper it was a decent deal but IIRC we ended up blowing it on part of the Gibbs deal and McHenry (or something to that effect?)

The only player form the 2015 and 2016 drafts STILL on our list is Wayne 'Injury prone' Milera - horrendous stuff.

Not sure you can combine both the compensation received AND then how we spent it. They are seperate issues.eg if we hypothetically got way unders for MM at pick 45 but then drafted Soligo (exceptional drafting) it throws up an erroneous result

My view traded out - CC (pick 12 excellent result. The normally Mr Rational, Vader, from memory didn’t think that result was possible. CC had only played he one exceptional game but did have huge promise with his physical gifts).

• Dawson - huge unders
• Rankine - fair value IMO knowing his immense talent, most thought overs
• ANB - slight overs but quite immaterial with only needing to pick up Welsh
• Burgess - didn’t pay anything meaningful (nor should we of)

Overall all, Reid has been very solid in this area in recent years

Burgess wouldn't be on minimum chips, given that we had to make him an offer lucrative enough to convince him to leave GC. It's probably not a big contract, but it would still be well above the AFL minimum.

I'm not buying into the whole Smith contract trigger argument. The fact of the matter is that he did reach his trigger, and paying him out inside the 2024 salary cap is a non-starter.

Strachan is our only backup ruckman, with the other options being Thilthorpe and Turray - neither of whom are viable options for taking over as the main ruck if something happens to ROB. If we were to delist Strachan then his replacement would need to be a ready made (mature) backup ruckman, not an 18yo kid from the draft. Essentially, his replacement when it happens (not this year) will be a zero sum game.

"Young back up... capable of playing if required" is basically a contradiction where ruckmen are concerned. They are, almost invariably, one or the other, but not both.

Also, If they did, you would be seriously playing with team spirit and culture. The playing group would be well aware of what you were doing to their mate and wouldn’t trust that it wouldn’t happen to them next.

To do with age and renowned issues with physical prep to get his body right , writing was on the wall

As I said at the time he’d have 30 games left at absolute max

I know but there arent as many FAscnext year and not likely get any of them. If draper comes (dont want him) would he at expense of ROB

we will have a bunch of spots we cant fill and using future picks wont help. you use those to improve not fill spots. two more should have been cut now to smooth it out.
