Reckon Hawthorn knew the right ones to move on, too

Low impact guys like JOM and Mitchell were the right ones to move, so they could prioritise Day, Newk etc. That’s what we should do now with Laird, but won’t

This was another area our list management that was appalling.

We kept Sloane, Laird, Crouch and Keays - all similar midfielders. Should have traded out two of them whilst we were cutting deep

And of course our rookie coach kept played them all in the midfield for years, stifling our midfield development.

Which is why our two best mids have been traded in and not developed by Nicks in his 5 years.

I don't think any other club wanted any of those players, not since Nicks took over.

We wanted speed (Gallucci) but never had a high draft pick to get a good one until Jones, McHenry, that's where the list error came.

But Nicks couldn't play anyone else could he, there was no one?

You mean not letting the BF Cartel get their hands on shiny new toys, before the toys are ready to be played with?

Putting games into duds - Murphy being the prime (and almost only) example - can be justified on the basis of a lack of alternatives. We simply don't have anyone with whom to replace him. I really wish we did, but the fact is that we don't. This is why the recruitment of ANB is so important (infinitely more important than Luko).
I think we had a promising young half forward who could have easily replaced Murphy this week.

We can't trade him, because he wouldn't have any takers and wouldn't agree to be traded anyway. Trading requires the agreement of 3 parties - the losing team, the gaining team, and the player - and all 3 need to agree to the trade. As of 2025, there's only 1 of the 3 parties with any interest in making a trade happen.

We can't pay out his contract and delist him, given that he has 2 years left on a fairly hefty salary.

We're stuck with him for at least another year, at which point the best we can do is talk him into retiring.
Then the coach needs to have the courage to drop him increasingly.

Barely best 22 for the past few months.

You make it sound so sweet you should be our recruiting officer…

This is excellent. Couple of things though.

Thilthorpe now contracted until end of 2028.

Edwards and Ryan are both 2026.

I know there was media saying RT had signed, but have the AFC come out and said it? If I can find a press release from the Crows, I'll change it. Edwards and Ryan only got the initial 2 year deals when drafted because they were drafted after pick 20.

Solid effort

Gold Coast will want more but that will play out.

We took Rachele with pick 6 and now trading him for pick 11?

Essentially you are trading our future first for pick 17, ANB and Petty. If we have a similar year to 2024 that would be a really bad outcome. We would miss out again on high end talent. If you are confident we will play finals then it works.

Good to see so many up and about with all the reasons why we did everything we could this season to be better - but we were either unlucky or hamstrung by previous unlucky decisions.

Poor us.

Why can’t we just avoid all injuries and have our young players be instantly better with more experience without having to develop them and without having to play them consistently in the AFL team in the positions that matter?

And why do our older players have to deteriorate when other teams seem to magically find roles for these guys that make their teams better? And some of them fluke bringing in experienced players for roles

Just so so unlucky.

Or … nah, can’t t think of any other logical explanation.

Add Taylor too to the list of class players we should have got more games into.
We used him as sub two games in a row prior to the Sydney game

Amazing stuff

4 times out of his 9 games as starting sub.

Zac, your performances just aren't consistent enough.

He clearly looks like he’s lost passion for the game and he’s adding nothing in leadership for our young guys

He could have a mini renaissance at another club as a role player for 2 years for sure , he should try instigate it if the club doesn’t
I recall a post by bigman pre season and I highlighted it as a watch as he said something like “Laird had been on the angry pills”, then again the next week same and was not getting midfield rotations . And a couple of player interviews with our younger players said how angry he was in a joking way. On that observation I had Laird noted as losing his position during the year, thing is he has gone toxic about it imo.

Trade if we can.
