Just rewatched the Allies vs Metro game from mid year. I don’t think I’ve seen a worse game from a defender in my life than what Luke Trainor displayed. Might retract my earlier rankings.

Murphy Reid
Travaglia
Tauru
Berry

Flemington straight

Trainor
Lindsay
Tauru is one of those players I'd love to have excess picks to have a crack at him but just don't think we will and think we have other list needs that will come before a player like him.

Has potential to be the best in class if he develops right with his physical gifts

Don’t hold your breath.
Gettable saying possible top 5 now. Seriously doubt he’s available at 12.
Honestly that suits us, because I'm not sure I rate him that highly overall.

Langford is one I'm expecting to slide, along with Draper to a lesser extent. Both aren't exactly quick.

Draper? He's lightning fast Jim? May not have the highest top speed but his acceleration is to die for.

He's still my number 1 kid for us in this draft, though we're pretty much no chance of him sliding to us imo.

Busy, great agility and I love the way he plays, but that last bit of speed and power is not on display. Just hangs outside the top 5 for mine.

Highly doubt Tauru & Reid are in the mix for our pick.
Also would not be judging a player on one game eg Trainor commentary.

Have you not seen a single Draper highlight? His whole thing is burst from stoppage… I’d say it’s widely accepted he’s the quickest/most powerful extracting the ball from congestion in the top 10 along with Lalor (less pace, more power).

This is from Rookie Me website that may know a little more than our mate Jim.

STRENGTHS:

  • Agility
  • Clean hands
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Speed
  • Work rate

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Durability
  • End product

The trait which immediately stands out with Draper is his turn of speed. He posted the top agility test time nationwide during the 2023 preseason (7.80 seconds), and it translates on-field where he is near-impossible to lay a hand on. Some of his best action shots this year feature him literally standing on his toes as he darts away at angles which defy belief.

His lightning acceleration makes him an asset in bringing contested ball to the outside. Draper's hands on the inside are supremely clean, and once he recaptured his usual touch as the season wore on, he got to showcase that kind of ability at senior level. He also uses his speed to take the game on in attacking phases, making carving runs through the corridor to set up scores.

One of Draper's best plays throughout his junior career came late in last year's SANFL Under 18s Grand Final, where he took off with three bounces before helping set up Dakota Sterzl for the game-sealing goal. Not only was it a passage which highlighted his enormous talent, but also the guile to recognise when a big moment arrived, and the bottle to take it.

What sets Draper apart even further is his work rate. He is capable of repeat sprint efforts and gets from contest to contest effectively. In that aspect, and with the aforementioned traits, he suits the modern game as a midfielder with balance who can impact on the way forward. The Adelaide supporter even models his game on Port stars Connor Rozee and Zak Butters.

For all his brilliance on the field, Draper also fits the bill off it. He is a diligent and thoughtful in his preparation throughout the week, investing heavily in his football to get the best out of himself. He can also lift others and has been entrusted with leadership roles throughout the pathway. It was no surprise to see him return from injury so emphatically, such is his professionalism.

In terms of his improvement areas, Draper sought to add polish to his disposal this year. Given he often moves at high speeds, his disposal can sometimes waver, though he backs himself in the way of decision making. Durability is the other slight question mark given his relatively slight frame and injuries on the back of a heavy preseason workload. He worked through it, though.

Surely we have no greater need than an athletic key position defender?

Could maybe argue a small forward/hhf like Berry maybe.

I’ve watched plenty of Trainor and had some doubts. This match solidified them for me. Have a watch. Completely capitulated. Wouldn’t surprise me if he slid into the 20s.

Even though I think Berry was what Austin wants, Tauru and Reid will be in the mix for sure. We lack a KPD and class mid/fwd.

KPP take years to come to fruition in most cases. We are in need of kids who fill a need and who can impact early on imo, and somewhat backed up by what Austin has commented in the last couple of weeks.

Trade for a stop gap KPP, draft small forwards and speed, maybe get a project KPD later in the draft who can develop behind the scenes and play in a few years time when Weitering begins to slow.

Most powerful is a silly thing to suggest, as I've seen him regularly bumped off the ball at junior level, and utterly ragdolled in the SANFL.

First few steps are excellent, but his top speed is a bit of a worry, as is his size and strength. It's not at Dow levels of concern as an overall package, but it is a concern at general stoppages (as distinct from centre bounces).

Who is the stop gap KPD? Feel like it’s harder to obtain than you suggest.

I do agree that Tauru might take too long to seriously impact, however, we need to think long term as well.

I’m glad we’re more interested in the draft than trading for Houston.

Our first round picks from the last two years look like good ones in Hollands and Moir. Our second round picks have been used on Cowan and Wilson that play the same position as Houston anyway.

Use the first round pick on the best available, get us the player we think will be a star.

Will be interesting to see what happens with our second round pick. With all these compensation picks it’s getting pushed back right into the area B Camporeale sits. Options would be trading up with one of our players that might be leaving, trading for a need or trading for a future pick. I wouldn’t leave it sitting there though.
