I've been far more disappointed in games this season than I was this evening. Sure the result sucks.

But I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest the result would have been different if we had Doc, Gov, Cerra, Curnow, McKay, Williams and TDK who would all be a chance to play a first final if we made it.

Realistically we had less than 30 fit players to select for a big game.

I'm happy with what we saw from Moir and Lord. Both are going to be long term prospects imo. Binns also looking like a best 22 prospect.

Cripps is the Brownlow medalist for me regardless of outcome. Just an absolute warrior.

Binns honestly looks like he belongs out there at the top level. But I think that a lot of people are gunshy about untested players after getting burnt by players like Dow, Stocker, and LOB. If we hadn't been so invested in playing the experienced players all the time, we wouldn't know how good the kids are. There are probably some guys on the list who are going to be delisted this year who have never been tested.

I don't think that the issue lies with just Voss. There are some others behind the scenes calling the shots... still!

All our coaches in recent history whenever we aren't total spoon tier hate playing the kids...

We always have to carry a bunch of mature age athletes who can gut run but lack footskills, game sense, speed and utility.

Umpires with way too much influence - in both directions.

Wasn't why we lost, but a blight on the game

First half was a war crime.

Second half was make it uppsies to make it look even.

Both manufactured and bullshit.

I just don’t think he would have had the impact he did if he had played longer.

I have no issue with change. Carroll was just okay, Lord was really stepping up next to Cripps, and we went with an extra goal kicker

We lost in the last 12 seconds. I understand the decision
I said earlier with the last 10 mins to go in 3rd qtr, would’ve given him a breather. This kid is a talent.
We shouldn’t be scared to fail with him. He will just get better & learn.
I’m sure hawk supporters love Mitchell’s faith in his youngsters

Let’s analyse the week of results:
  • Hawks beat North as expected but that was the bad result for us.
  • Cats beat Eagles as expected but that was the bad result for us. They also didn’t go on with the game in the second half and get their percentage above Port meaning that Port don’t have to win to hold 2nd spot and a home final. Thus taking away some of their hunger against Freo.
  • Gold Coast beat Tigers as expected but that was the bad result for us. Meant that Saints could afford to win and not drop a spot in the draft order.
  • Brisbane beat Essendon as expected but that was the bad result for us. Meant even if we had won we would have had an interstate trip.
  • Bulldogs beat GWS and that was a bad result for us. Meant Port didn’t need to win to hold 2nd spot. GWS also had 3 late outs including two small forwards in a game that was played in blustery conditions.
  • We lose obviously a bad result. But we lose in Carlton fashion to add to the sting.
  • Freo will beat Port as they now have more to play for given the results and they’ll take 8th spot after having knocked off less top 8 teams for the year than us. Port also lose Houston to suspension and Dixon a late out before the game to take away a key target. During the game Farrell has been subbed and Aliir is off injured also adding to the likelihood of a Freo win.

A lot of that was expected but still it’s the absolute perfect storm of bad results for us. It’s such a Carlton thing to happen that you actually sit back and laugh.

Binns can play. Lord can play. Moir can play.

That’s the silver lining out of that show.

If we’d brought the intensity of the last two weeks over the previous month, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

We have to be more willing to play guys like Binns and not keep talking about his deficiencies.

Totally agree.

Out of all the injuries we’ve been forced to play these kids and to be honest have found some beauties.

Binns/Lord/Moir should all be starting 23.

May have just changed our list strategy for next year.

Wasn't it?

How many bs frees does a team need till we can blame some of it on umpiring??
Nah, because their corrupt review at 3qtr time meant they tried their hardest to balance the ledger. Not sure what the final count was but at some stage in the last, we were 8 free kicks to none. Umpires had way too much influence, but the worst part was the inconsistency of decisions.

it is going to be a very long off season. Can't wait to see the players back next year who didn't get to play this year. JSOS I'm looking at you. St Kilda too good today. Yet again kicked too many points in the first quarter. Acres really shouldn't have missed that goal in the first.

Regardless If the saints bad kicking for goal throughout kept us in it, when the team gets in front late, has the momentum and gets in to a position to win the game, whoever it is needs to stand up and unfortunately today, Kemp wasn’t good enough.

In the first we had 3 players take set shots on no angle and less than 30m out, who all failed to finish off the hard work their team mates put it.

I would love to have the no how and time to put a package together of how bad our forward line functions but I don’t, I watch local football sides who’s forwards have better forward nous and structure than we do.

What has happened to forwards leading at the ball carrier, forwards leading in to space to create space behind them, what has happened to smalls hitting the fall of the ball with momentum?

So many times in the last we broke from a stoppage and delivered to the vicinity of kemp, because no one lead, so when we went to kemp, most of the time Moir was in his way.

All year we have lost games despite having more inside 50s because we play dumb football. Regardless of our injuries I think we should have done better and the coaching group needs to do some real work in the offseason.

Far too easy to score against and far too dumb going forward.

This season hurts

I've opted to go through denial, anger and depression at once to expediate the process. Bargaining will be over once the Freo game finishes. Acceptance is going to take a whole offseason.

Is there a legitimate, good faith reasoning for why we consistently make the same systematic errors? How we would bomb it long into the 50 even once this game just does not compute for me at all.
It just feels so unbelievably stupid that I can only put it down to me missing something.
When Walsh does it Un opposed from inside the square straight in front to a 4 on 2 it is a real head scratcher

Anyone putting this loss on Kemp is a clown.
Why not , 1 min to go you need to stand up , your teammates
Have been putting these balls on the line for 79 minutes and you have done Jack shit it’s your time
To go … when is it his time !!! To be honest I would be embarrassed if I was him

I understand but he would have had heavy legs. It’s miles in the legs he needs

IMO the way we used him was right and will benefit him greatly. Just my take

How many frees in front of goal did the Moorabbin rabble get?

Shattered yes, but couldn’t have asked for any more effort from the boys. Round 1 team will be vastly different from this team (returning players, some traded out/in).

Off the field needs big improvement, coaching/tactics/flexibility and most importantly strength and conditioning

Moir was a slow burn in the VFL this year, incredible talent but learned something in each game which he couldn’t have in the seniors, so I think they got that right for his timing to come in

Binns unluckier not to come in earlier, but will learn a lot from these 2 games and freed up Hollands for 2 of his better games for the year.

Lords in close hands are awesome, especially under pressure, added something to us around the ball.

Kemp has found his role up forward, not a massive game but Wilkie didn’t dominate the game either with interceptions marks. Missed some goals last week as well, summer of goal kicking. Provides a good mobile pressure in the forward line.

Hard decisions to made on the smalls, Motts (was he just not fit this year or was it fools gold last year), Durds (great game last week but was clearly injured today) and Owies is reliable (but do we need draft capital for potential recruits)

We don’t deserve to be in finals with our finish to the year, but funnily enough if we make it, we could win a final, if all the boys come back and are 100% fit. If not, we get a mid table draw, unlike our brutal early season draw.
