VFL 2024 Swans Reserves

Didn't notice this mentioned in this thread or elsewhere, but looks like the VFL squad for 2024 has been updated on the official club site.

Bunch of new names, with Phill Moi Moi being my favourite (wonder if he is any relation to former NRL player Fui Fui Moi Moi?). Bunch of familiar names too like Morrison, Shipley, Bartholomaeus and others.

Wonder if that is the final confirmed list for the season? 21 names on the list, does that seem like a lot for essentially a squad of players to help top-up the VFL team numbers when needed? Possibly some still to be cut from the squad?

And those who follow the Academy prospects closer than me, a couple of names ring a bell as being from there, with Lachlan Cabor being one from memory? Or maybe they have all now already been up for drafting in previous years and weren't chosen?

EDIT: As mooted a month or so ago, delisted Magpie Will Kelly is on the list. Son of Craig Kelly the Magpie premiership player and current CEO.

Sounds right. I am told GWS used over 50 platers in their VFL side last season, the final list is not the final list as such, they can bring players in and out basically all season.

They will have a few more on a supplementary list , that they can call on .
I get a list every week who is not playing VFL and is released back to their home club

All the academy names on the list have passed their first draft opportunity. Cabor was an U19 last year, while Gander (for example) was in the overage (U19) squad last year and played some VFL but was also a mainstay of the academy team and was permitted to play for the Allies in the U18 championships (alongside fellow over-ager Indhi Kirk). Cabor’s inclusion on the official VFL list suggests he won’t be part of the academy programme, despite still qualifying agewise as U19.

Max Rider, on the other hand, isn’t included on the VFL list but, going by the Rookie Me Central reporting on pre-season testing, will be participating in the academy programme as an U19. He may or may not be eligible to play as an overager in the National Championships : usually those opportunities are given to players who didn’t get selected for any games in their draft year (like Kirk, though he did make the squad in his U18 year). Rider played in three of the four games in the 2023 championships so may not get another chance at that level. Although he’s not on the VFL squad list, I imagine he’ll play a fair amount of VFL when he’s not playing academy games.

One name missing from the VFL squad list is Will Collis, who has been a mainstay for at least the last two seasons. I think he might even have been captain (or co-captain) in 2023. Other long-term regulars - Shipley, Harry Morrison and Jake B - are back for more.

Will try and find out about Collis might have gone home to Gippsland , he's great mates with Paps

A couple of players are linked to local Premier Division teams - Hugo Birks with UTS Bats, Will Kelly with UNSW-ES Bulldogs

Collis came up to live with Paps shortly after his unsuccessful attempt to get traded to Carlton. Maybe Papley's GF was keen to lose the third wheel 🤣

Moi Moi is a Geelong West lad (weirdly has them as his local club still, flying in and out when not needed for Sydney VFL).

Believe is the partner of AFLW Laura Gardiner but could be thinking of someone else.

Solid list not too many changes.

Yeah I was reading up on him and there was a recent article stating he will fly back down and play for them if not needed for the VFL team any given week.

I look forward to saying "Look at Moi" every time he makes a mistake.
Occurs to me that he could say, after he has a player of the match performance or similar ... "who was best on ground today?" and then proceed to point his two thumbs towards his own chest and reply to his question, in a French accent ... "moi!"

I would think Geelong West, a club sponsor might be footing the bill. Unless he is signed as a Melb based player to play only in Melb?

Article yesterday said it was a fly in agreement with Geelong West and he is based in Sydney. Didn't know GWest was loaded like that either!
