BUt battle may not want to be part of the fabric. He is a free agent and he cand do what he wants.I think he is because we end up over paying glorified spuds with minimal output.
For example Gresham was on 800k. How much did we over pay billings and acres for the longest time.
Battle is part of the fabric of the club.
Needs more Lobb
Melbourne will end up picking up a fair chunk of his salary so I don’t think it’s what will ultimately stop a side taking him on.
If we have 4/5 I’d even consider splitting 5 depending on who we take at 4, great draft to have multiple first round picks imo.
We do not know how much better shoenmaker will be. This is his 1st season. I wonder what the comparison shoenmaker 1st year to Battle 1st year?you need to actually draft a mid and develop them. its very risky. its unknown. we've had very little success there and i know its a new head recruiter and list boss. pretty sure the swans didn't need top 5 picks to build their midfield. i know heeney is a top 5 academy pick. the rest weren't or don't play midfield (i.e. mills).
schoenmark cannot defend. he's not a battle replacement and if he's going to be that player its speculative and could take 3 years.
battle is a very popular player, as seen on the weekend. i'd be wary of letting those guys go. at 26 he's now ready to start becoming a leader. some players take longer to develop into leadership roles. see hill for example. hill's not in the leadership group, neither is wood from memory. both are crucial to mentoring the younger players.
reallocating cap space? for what? no free agent is coming if we don't play finals. no decent trade targets that form part of the engine are coming. it'll be flankers and very average KPP/midfield talent looking for opportunity and $$$.
what you're going to do is stunt the immediate onfield results which will affect attracting and retaining talent.
I think it was pretty similar. "We have a great relationship, we catch up regularly" etc.gresham felt a bit different. ross had a bit of angst and made a comment about gresham being stuck between his manager and the club.
Perfect post. If we prioritise draft quality the trade moves are in support of that and should not cause any angst.I’d back our guys to evaluate Oliver, and then if clear make the right deal. We have a very experienced crew now. Not naive.
Draft pick to us, part of the salary….Membrey in the deal somewhere? Clauses about hair tests. Would have to be very much in our favor.
I remember about 18 months ago admiring Clarrie’s game and wishing we had someone like that. With a solid pre-season (which he didn’t get this year) I could see him getting back towards his best.
Quite a bit of water to go under the bridge before we get too excited. Or triggered! Depends on your viewpoint.
A limp up start?correct, shiel won't be a walk up start...he'll prob be injuried.
What am I jesting about?
The fact he has some serious off field issues and that if we woke up tomorrow he could be dead and no one would be surprised?
Or the fact that he is owed 1.1m for each year of his remaining contract and with everything else surrounding Oliver that if we took that on I’d want draft compensation for the risk?

Nor would he be at any rate.I love Oliver but he's not a guy you want guiding a squad with a bulk of them under 23. Social issues galore.
