So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Quote just in from the list manager at the Hawks about their pick 7 choice:

"Yeah look, Mitch Lewis has just done his ACL and we love Cholly but he's neither a long term option or a real marking target, with the other guys on our list still very young and developing. We love what Nick brings as a hard running marking target (and we believe the best remaining KPF in the draft). We think our game plan will really benefit from having an outlet kick option all over the ground, resulting in far fewer opposition intercepts. We also love his leadership and the fact he will reach elite status very early in his career (unlike some of the other KPF's who take longer to come on) to assist our young team in their pursuit of flags from as early as next year or the year after"

can i just say i'm super smug as a dees fan that gawn was drafted before cox but as someone picking late in the draft for a team that arguably needs a ruckman more than most i am SPEWING that they're both off the board already...

they're two of the all-timers imo

amazing cox was a rookie pick
Shows how much I rate prime Gawn. (And how much we need a great Ruck) (and mids)

Prime Gawn HOTA and around the ground was too much to resist.

Still some good quality ruckmen on the table. They are not as good as Gawn and Cox but Sandilands, Naitanui, Ryder and Goldstein are all there, though some of whom I expect will likely go in the second or third rounds.

Reasoning for Dean Cox:

The Lions are have a solid ruck in McInerney but he provides no real POD to make them better than where they are right now. Adding Cox in his prime gives them a big POD.

GWS take Alex Rance

With Pick #13 in BigFooty's 21st Century Mock Draft, the Collingwood Football Club select...

JOEL SELWOOD

If I were building a team from scratch, I'd go with the best available - which I believe to be Nick Daicos - but fortunately we already have him for the next dozen or so years, so I went with a warrior inside midfielder with outstanding leadership qualities, to complement Daicos in the Collingwood midfield for the next decade.

Selwood walked into Geelong in 2007 and was instrumental in setting the on field and off field standards immediately, and did so for his entire career, right through until his last game - the 2022 Grand Final - where he was (with Hawkins) the most influential player on the ground in the first half to put the game to bed.

I can't recall a player who has put his team on his back more frequently than Joel Selwood - 'Come with me boys, we are NOT going to lose this game' - and I look forward to him driving another successful era at Collingwood.

Note: I also strongly considered another 400 game career from Scott Pendlebury, but chose to avoid the potential bias, and felt Selwood was a better fit at this time. If I had the likes of Reid or Wardlaw on my list instead of Daicos, Pendlebury would have been selected.

Exactly what we need. There isnt a huge gap between 50 midfielders so kpps are vital

Having Curnow would automatically push Tabs out which would be massive.

Pick #13- Geelong- Nat Fyfe
Prime Fyfe was as good as it gets, I was hoping for Rance to slip through for a non midfield pick but that didnt happen. I would love to see Fyfe and Dangerfield in the same midfield and also with the information that the pick is adding to a list a star midfielder would be amazing.

your turn.

We could certainly do with a young Nat Fyfe right now! Add a draftee midfielder of that calibre, along with Smith (hopefully) and that midfield would have some potential.

Great write up.

Selwood wasn't as silky as Pendlebury or line breaking as Dangerfield/Martin, but he was a hell of an on field leader (from day one really), tough as nails and was so influential no matter the quality of the team. Without him I have no doubt the 2007-2011 era loses at least one or two flags, and Geelong goes back to the bottom end of the ladder following it.

Selwood-Daicos would also be a scary 1-2 combo.

Indeed.

Leadership is such an underrated attribute when people discuss the champions of the past.

It's the #1 consideration for me.
