It’s not the same. You’re acting like a nuffie
In both instances the batter's lack of awareness cost them their wicket

The nuffiness is somehow feeling that fielders owe a duty of care towards the batsman for their own error

Anyone who bats out of their crease will be feeling a little nervous in the upcoming tests.
Perhaps but it's common sense. Get back behind your crease and wait til the keeper/fielder has returned the ball. Don't just remain out and immediately wander off.

Would Bairstow have wandered down the pitch if Carey was keeping up to the stumps?

He's got a responsibility to get through the over, whether the keeper is standing one metre or twenty metres behind the stumps doesn't change that. It's not a war crime, just a bit absent-minded.

Right, that's enough for me tonight, guys. You've already seen my thoughts on the controversial circumstances of this match. It was a great test for both sides. I hope we all remember this match for the great cricket played, not the controversial and negative circumstances. Smith put in a great effort. He may have dropped Stokes, but we wouldn’t have won if it weren’t for his century, and he made up for dropping Stokes with that other catch. Head batted very well in the first innings, and that contribution certainly helped. In the end, even Marnus's 47 runs in the first innings helped us win this game. Our short-ball tactic certainly worked to great effect in the first innings. We shouldn’t have done it to Stokes when he was bashing them like that, but I think we were right to do it again against their tail. The Starc yorker and Cummins top-of-off wicket were two absolute beauties and helped seal the game for us. Nathan Lyon is an absolute legend. Coming back out like that. An ANZAC effort was that. Well done to Ben Stokes. One of the great Ashes innings. I'm not at all happy with his comment, but you cannot deny that was a great innings. We're up 2-0. Surely we can't let The Ashes slip now. Go Australia!!!

Bairstow is 100% at fault. I don’t love the action but it’s out and I have no issue with people happy with the action.

But I just think it’s nuffie behaviour to compare this to the de Grandhomme run out. de Grandhomme gets hit on the pad, wonders around never returning to his crease and gets run out by gully. It is not in any way comparable to Bairstow leaving his crease early after he left the ball through and was standing in his crease.
Carey took the ball and immediately threw - while Bairstow was actually in his crease. Bairstow had no reason to think the ball was dead any more than De Grandhomme did. Both are similar lapses and I don't love either dismissal.

He wouldn’t. It’s 100% on Bairstow who should know better as a keeper and who no doubt would’ve tried the same tactic on multiple occasions.

I also don’t like when the keepers do the hold and wait while up at the stumps like Foakes does here and is a far better example as a gotcha than the de Grandhomme one.

You watch David Warner this series....sure he hasn't had the big score....but he is 100% concentrating every ball. He always looks around to make sure the ball is dead before gardening when he is batting.

Steve Smith is the same. Always looking behind before wandering out of the crease. The value they place on their wicket is 10x that Bairstow places on his and it is evident through mannerisms such as I have described above.

Once again, completely Bairstow’s fault. Left the ball and was complacent just thinking the ball would be dead. Literally no other player in the game was wondering off as soon as they left it assuming the ball wasn’t in play anymore. Both are clearly the batsman’s fault but they’re not similar at all.

How do you not love the de Grandhomme one? Do you think Pope should’ve not had a shy at the stumps?

He did get through the over, he scratched his mark at the crease thinking the over was done and walked up the pitch.

He should have waited for the umpire to call over before he walked up the pitch but it was clear to all and sundry that he wasn't going for a run.

Clever from Carey to see a chance to throw the ball at the stumps but it was an underhanded way to get a batsman out and not in the spirit of the game

I think that run outs where players are not actually attempting a run are all equivalently not really in the spirit of the rules but every side does the same so not really a hill I'm going to die on.

Not really. There’s no way de Grandhomme could think it was a dead ball.

and Bairstow could?

He's a keeper. He should know the relevant rules pretty well.

The England 'defence' seems to rely on a test keeper not knowing the rules with regard to a keeper taking the ball and stumping the batsman.

I don't thnk stupidity is a valid excuse.

Tubby Taylor said post-game that Murphy was a good chance to play the 3rd Test .
Isn't he still in Oz?

Neser would have a better chance.

He should be there...

Australian Test Squad

Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, David Warner

de Grandhomme gets hit on the pad, wonders around never returning to his crease and gets run out by gully.

Bairstow ducks under the ball, wanders out of his crease and is stumped by the keeper.

It's really no different. Two blokes wandering around, without a care for the consequences. You can't reward stupidity (despite the plethora of participation medals in this day and age).

That Stokes innings was worth it to see the polarizing nature of this board in a 2 hour span! Saw calls of match fixing, that Green should never play again and probably worse but I skipped over a few pages 😂. Stokes was playing a risky game and he was the only wicket we needed to take to wrap the game up. Smithy takes his catch and it’s over far earlier, but he was always generating another chance with the tactics he was employing, which he had to with their tail. Enthralling day of Test cricket and we are 2-0 up, can’t wait to be in London in a couple of days time! 😁
