Surely Webster in for the Flying Bison as well why were at it.

If Marsh isnt bowling he isnt good enough to justify a top 6 batsman without the All-round ability he brings.
Why do we need bowling support, assuming our three bowlers are fit? They're three of the best bowlers in the world. We have not struggled to get India out, and Starc, Cummins and Bowland will be more than enough at the G.

Is Webster a better batsmen than Mitch Marsh? I highly doubt it.

Very harsh on McSweeney, George Bailey needs to do some explaining. Reluctance to shift the old guard is concerning.

Oh its a tough series and you need battle hardened experienced players so you can't drop them. Oh hey and we have an ashes series coming up which is alongside playing against india is tough. So you cant drop experienced players for that.

round and round we go.
Harris is also 32 and has received plenty of opportunities. He's not a long-term answer.

McSweeney is 25, by all reports an exceptional leader, and has been one of the best batters in the Shield for the last few years. He was also the best performing batter in the PM's XI games.

He's one of the players we need to be backing in and giving chances rather than just dropping him while all but Head and Carey are struggling.

I agree, keep mcsweeny in and bring in konstas.

head struggling?

Furthermore, if Marsh isn't bowling he should be nowhere near even the prime ministers 11.

You shift McSweeney down the order and plug Konstas in to open.
I like this option. If the pitch looks flat, I'd go with Webster for added support. Marsh is struggling badly and questions over fitness. If not, McSweeney down at 6. Good one.

Agreed. They were bona fide openers. My comment wasnt clear and more directed at McSweeney who I feel a bit for.

Young enough so hopefully gets some runs when Shield returns. A lineup including Konstas, McSweeney, Hunt, and Cam Green when he returns looks youthful and promising, providing the selectors can manage them into the side and they of course score runs.

It just shows the weak era of Australian cricket for the past 10 to 15 years. Batsman now averaging mid to high 30s in Australian domestic cricket. No one really pushing and adding pressure on the Test team.

In the 1990s through to mid 2000s-ish.....batsman were averaging in the 40 to 50 region. Back in that era there was depth.

Back then we played Sheffield Shield Cricket intermingled with Domestic ODI cricket in Summer…now we play big bash and blow smoke up one trick pony leg side sloggers and tell them how awesome their 12 was…

By bringing in Konstas we are choosing to damage two players’ careers before they even begin.

Just go with Renshaw, Harris, or even Patterson.

Would even consider Patterson to 3 and Marnus to open.
Marnus cant score either

Go with a new combo and move to Mcsweent down the order. Retire Khawaja
Patterson
Konstas
Smith
Head
mcSweeny
Webster

This opener poition should of been sorted last year against the Windies and Pakistan not against India and Bumrah.
Which would have meant the 2nd opener should have sorted this summer

Yep…they really stuffed this up big time.

The set McSweeney up to fail in a huge way and I really feel for the kid.
Disagree because they should have been replacing Khawaja this summer so he would have been in the frame for that

McSweeney deserves to be in the test side. Just not as an opener. Sadly, not a lot of openers in that top group - Konstas and Harris the leading contenders. Left field option - Tim Ward - having an excellent season; prime age at 26; has been batting at 3, but has spent a lot of time previously at top of the order.

Had to come back before Boxing Day to type my displeasure at Nathan McSweeney being dropped for the MCG Test. C'mon CA you chose him to debut in an unnatural position, on bowler friendly tracks against arguably one of the worlds form bowlers with a new red cherry in his hand. Yet you continue to play jobs for the boys. George, Sween soaked up 13 more overs than Ussie. A telling stat.

Yeah giving him 3 games and dumping him is exactly how we got in this situation.

Hasnt had a great start but there’s senior players doing just as badly and he’s up against the best bowler in the world from ball one. He definitely deserves a go in the middle order.

I understand not wanting to drop your most experienced players at a crucial moment in the series but you made the call so stick with it. If Konstas was this close why didn’t they start with him? If that BBL innings was what turned their head then we’re well and truly f*cked. Gutless selection from Bailey.

Averages dont tell the full story. Missing the most obvious choice, Henry Hunt, 3 tons leading run scorer after 6 rounds. Then Tim Ward and Sam Konstas. Hunt must've been close to a cap a few years back.

Has it been confirmed yet or still speculation ?

I like Ward. Like Hunt, he had a tough time of it last season though.

Been great to start the Shield this year. His last dig almost won Tassie the game.
