Player Watch #7: Liam Baker - Traded to West Coast for pick 14

Was pretty disappointed with bakes speech last night, still technically vice captain of the club, I know he’s a light hearted cruisey type of guy but his speech just looked and sounded terrible.
Loved watching him and the effort and heart he played every game with but that’s his last appearance at a Richmond player had flattened me a bit.
Shai and Dan Rioli I could understand, not great speakers, never done a lot of media stuff.
Bakes got up there half pissed, big hug and laugh with shai almost to say how funny and awkward is this.

Thank him for everything he’s done for the tiges but just a disappointing finish unfortunately for a guy many were hoping would be our next captain.

We still need to draft someone who is capable of being as good if not better. Long way to go to decide that.

It's not often at my age that I get 'too hard externally' and I can easily make a fool of myself without doing that, so no, I'm going to rub all of those salty one's noses in it until it bleeds.

I think we (via the media) really overblow the idea that being part of a flag team confers some spiritual connection to the team.

Perhaps Bakes didn’t think he’d figure in the awards or that was the remnants of his level of struggle with the decision to leave. At the end of the day it’s difficult to say for certain but his commitment & position within the club as we’ve all heard was held very highly. I for one will cut him a bit of slack…

I won’t, and I was his biggest fan…It wasn’t a Melbourne Cup field and there was a good chance he’d be on the podium…If not sober (fair enough) be prepared and speak with respect, particularly about a club that believed in you, and provided two flags to boot…That he’ll be “watching from afar” doesn’t cut it with me…

Tigers have to squeeze Frreo,s the Suns and Eagles nuts hard till they cough up what is fair to maximise our draft chances of nailing quality career Tigers.

one thing is clear, Richmond fans won't be rolling out the red carpet when he is a non-Richmond jumper this season. I get that the Tigers are rebuilding, but if your a member you would be filthy and felt like hung to dry.

I can’t believe all the crap on here about Bakers speech. It wasn’t that bad he just looked really awkward. If you’ve listened to Baker talk before you’d know that he always comes over as a bit of a larrikin. Bolton felt so awkward he hardly got anything out. Didn’t help that the matter of the three guys leaving was just ignored by the club. The club should have thanked them and celebrated their time at Richmond, and said we still hope you don’t go.

Frankly I don’t give a shite, they are both champion Richmond men and always will be. Bolton for his electrifying skill and Bakes for having an absolute crack and giving the game is all.

He would have bloody known he was going to have to get on stage - it would hardly have been a surprise that he was in top group at the b&f considering how many top players missed games.

Wouldnt be wrong to even take a leaf out of Marlion Pickett and the way he thanked the club after deciding to mention he retired. I know he had his off-field battle but D Rioli and Bolton could take a leaf out of his book.
